I liked this story but it has left me very disturbed. Abuse and sad (to me) ending.

🕵️♂️ a protagonist who doesn‘t fit the conventional image of lawman or investigator and can be eccentric, mixed in with shady criminals. Though sometimes loners, Noir MCs collaborate with other noirs to help their victims.
🕵🏻♀️ I read a lot of John D. macDonald‘s Travis McGee books (each title has a color in it). McGee,tough and intelligent, lives in Florida on the houseboat The Busted Flush, (won in a poker game), and takes on dangerous 👇
at first it seemed pretty dated but by the end i was a huge fan of tough guy Travis McGee 😎 #May2020 #BestMysteriesOfAllTime
“I am wary of them. And I am wary of a lot of other things, such as plastic credit cards, payroll deductions, insurance programs, retirement benefits, savings accounts, Green Stamps, time #clocks, newspapers, mortgages, sermons, miracle fabrics, deodorants, check lists, time payments, political parties, lending libraries, television, actresses, junior chambers of commerce, pageants, progress, and manifest destiny.” #QuotsyDec19
Picked up the first 3 of this series in Florida. Wasn‘t drawn by the cover but by the comments from Stephen King, Jonathan Kellerman, Mary Higgins Clark, Dean Koontz, Sue Grafton, John Saul and Lee Child. Love finding these older mystery series and what a powerhouse group of fans! Only took a few chapters in to see why.
This book genuinely surprised me. It surpassed my expectations for the genre, with truly poetic passages that I found myself re-reading. I picked it up for a light read during a trip to New England to visit family, and now I feel like I need to read more of this central character's adventures.
"In appearance, it is as though somebody bleached Sinatra, skinned him, and made Willie wear him."
Not sure how many times I have read this book. It is still great.
Grilling out today. Re-reading The Deep Blue Good-By since it has come up a couple of times in the last month. Also, writing an episode of The Saint.
I bought this after it was mentioned in another book. I enjoyed the well written turns of phrase. Reading it was like a sociological study in the social norms of a bygone era. The plotline was pure genre cliche and a bit dark. But the writing itself is good. It's a fast read. Great for getting out of a reading slump. I would like to read the whole series; for fun and to see how the social commentary changed over those turbulent decades.

The time capsule sexism is a bit off putting but Travis McGee is an interesting enough character to bring me back for another book.

Oof. Good thing I read this for my mystery book group because I'm not entirely sure what I think of this one.
Next up for my mystery book group.
The great American crime series and a great look at America and Florida from the 60's through the 80's. In an alternate timeline, there is a Travis McGee film series that rivals James Bond.
First in the Travis McGee series. Entertaining if dated. I'd like to read a few more.
