Genesis of a PlagueRight now, in a remote corner of rural China, a farmer and his family are sharing their water supply with their livestock: chickens, ducks, pigs, sheep. They share the same waste-disposal system, too.Bird viruses meet their human counterparts in the bloodstreams of the swine, where they mix and mutate before spreading back into the human population. And a new flu is born....Dr. Noah Haldane, of the World Health Organization, knows that humanity is overdue for a new killer flu, like the great influenza pandemic of 1919 that killed more than twenty million people in less than four months. So when a mysterious new strain of flu is reported in the Gansu Province of mainland China, WHO immediately sends a team to investigate. Haldane and his colleagues soon discover that the new disease, dubbed Acute Respiratory Collapse Syndrome, is far more deadly than SARS, killing one in four victims, regardless of their age or health. But even as WHO struggles to contain the outbreak, ARCS is already spreading to Hong Kong, London, and even America. In an age when every single person in the world is connected by three commercial flights or fewer, a killer bug can travel much faster than the flu of 1919.Especially when someone is spreading the virus on purpose...

Bailedbailed

I might have liked this book if we were not currently in a pandemic. My biggest issue is that people are being really proactive and self isolating 😂 this is too far from reality for right now, so I‘m bailing.

inthegreensandblues LOL "too far from reality." ?? 4y
TheRiehlDeal If only people in the book could just come to life and live in this reality and vice verse. People in this country are taking orders from a fascist president and are the reason why the coronavirus is still an issue in the US. But whatever, people can just give two f---s about getting the Rona. Good thing we have books to escape from reality. Rant over. 😆 4y
Reagan @TheRiehlDeal I hear you! I would love for real people to be as responsible as these fictional ones 😳 4y

Mehso-so

Found this gem in a Little Free Library and couldn't help myself. It was ok. Definitely a lot of parallels with what is happening now. Only in this case the pandemic is an act of bioterrorism. Kind of neat because it was written by an actual MD.

MsMelissa I think this was Kalla‘s first book, and it showed at times. I thought his latest, which I read before this one, was excellent 4y
Bookish.SAM Thanks for the little free library reminder😊 I recently found a few while wandering my neighbourhood. I‘ve been meaning to go back to drop off some 📚 4y

There is a cute restored 50s era mall near me , people have felt so penned up they come and picnic in the car! There is also a craft brewery doing curbside, so great beer available too.🍻can‘t fault people for wanting to get out. Most I‘ve seen are courteous and social distancing. They clean every morning but on my walk took this snap so indicative of covid times .🍔🍕

This is how I plan to survive all this craziness. Well after I convert all my course to an online format. Stay well everyone! #COVID-19 #quaranread #quarantine #quarantinebook

britt_brooke Ha! Yep, me, too! #cheers 5y
GingerAntics Well played, ma‘am. That is my plan as well. We just found out today that we‘d be going online after a one week extension on spring break (which started today). So I‘m going in the exact same direction. 5y
MicrobeMom @britt_brooke @GingerAntics all liquors stores close at 9pm tonight in PA. I had to go out and get more. Thank goodness I have a huge TBR pile at home!!! 5y
GingerAntics TBR piles save lives!!! (As long as there is also alcohol available 😂) 5y

Self isolation reading with my Dieter. This week has been slightly surreal to say the least. I hope that people stop panic buying and hoarding which is the worst thing imaginable. People trying to profit through reselling should be charged.

Be kind to one another, you might not know who is in a high risk category, we all need to work together - well no, but I hope you catch my drift.

Hooked_on_books There‘s a guy in San Diego area who went out on a street corner and set up a TP exchange for those who needed it. It‘s nice to see some people still behaving in a decent way. 5y
Reagan @hooked_on_books that is so nice! I hope they crack down on people who are hoarding. I saw that they got all that hand sanitizer from the guy who filled up a storage unit with it.

Glad I have plenty of my own books to read.

Suet624 Can you imagine if you didn‘t? 5y
CocoReads @Suet624 my sister and I were just texting about it and she said she feels we‘ve been prepping for this for years with our obsessive book buying. She‘s a teacher and her school just closed for the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, I‘ll be back at work on a Tuesday hopefully if my eye continues to keep healing 5y
Suet624 I feel the same way. Like I‘m totally prepared for this!! What‘s wrong with your eye? 5y
CocoReads @Suet624 corneal abrasion. It‘s been a hellish 3 days trying to find out what was wrong and get treatment but today I finally went to the Er and after a referral finally got a diagnosis and treatment. 5y
Suet624 Darn! I‘m sorry!! 5y

We got homemade pho tonight at our friends' place. Her mom made it for us! We are also playing Pandemic - completing April - it's a year-long commitment and very intense. And, as always, so many beers. No books tonight!

LeahBergen This looks like all sorts of amazing. 8y
