Show Me a Sign | Ann Clare LeZotte
post image

I ran out to the library an hour before it closed for lockdown to grab a book for my dissertation, and spotted Show Me a Sign on the new children's book shelf and had to pick it up. It remains one of the most layered children's books I've read: an #OwnVoices Deaf author writing a Deaf protagonist about the historically mostly deaf population on Martha's Vineyard during the colonial period. ⬇️

SaunteringVaguelyDownwards Ableism is explored through the attitude of a researcher who visits the village, as is race and colonialism, as the European settlers disagree with the Wampanoag natives about land rights and demean the former Black slave working for Mary's family. 4y
ShyBookOwl Wow. Sounds incredible 4y

My favourite is the tagged book. I think I liked because it how Churchill rallied the Brits during the #battleofbritain with honesty and to do their bit and also Larson‘s writing style helped to move the story along. #lockdownfaves

Crazeedi Great book 4y
Bklover I‘m looking forward to this one. 4y

New Romancer | Peter Milligan

Romance all the way!! In the beforetimes, romance was a rare genre read for me, but I‘ve been devouring contemporary romance during the pandemic. Finding the guarantee of a happily ever after to be oh so comforting!! #lockdownfaves @ShyBookOwl

JamieArc I was in a major reading slump so I embraced some romances this past month and was surprised at how much I loved them! I must have been reading the wrong ones before, because I was surprised at the world building and the dialogue. They were outside of what I expected and I really liked them. 4y

The Poppy War | R.F. Kuang

📚 I read so many books over the lockdown (I did the math, it‘s 407 🤯) but some favourites are The Poppy War, City of Brass, and The Martian

📚 I‘ve finally gotten more into adult fantasy!

ShyBookOwl 407!!! Wow! That's incredible. I read The Martian during lockdown too. I loved it! 4y
Prairiegirl_reading There was a moment where graphic novels scratched the itch in my Covid brain so I loved Good Talk, March and They Called Us Enemy. All so good. I also loved The Switch and Ragged Company. All books I don‘t think I even knew about before lockdown. My reading life has changed a lot in the past year! 4y
Scochrane26 I think The House in the Cerulean Sea has been my favorite. I would have loved it in regular times, but during the pandemic, it gave me some hope & love in humanity. 4y

EvieBee I dove back into several mystery series that I had neglected for awhile and started new ones. Also middle grade. Favorite books thus far surprisingly are MY ANTONIA and A GENTLEMAN IN MOSCOW. (edited) 4y
cleoh @Scochrane26 that‘s one I‘ve been meaning to pick up, I just haven‘t gotten around to yet! So glad it helped you 💕 4y
cleoh @Prairiegirl_reading I thought I would have read more graphic novels during lockdown, but they weren‘t doing it for me. There are definitely some I want to check out soon! I love that you found so many new titles 4y
cleoh @ShyBookOwl I‘m pretty sure I was bitten by a radioactive spider and this is my hero origin story 😂 The Martian is one of my all time faves, so glad you enjoyed it too! 4y
cleoh @EvieBee I‘ve heard great things about both of those! I think I started more series than I finished last year, so maybe that‘s a goal for this year 😂 4y
ShyBookOwl @cleoh amazing lol! 4y

The Shining | Stephen King

It's been a wild ride this last year, and I'm sure we've all relied on books more than ever.

For me, I leaned in with The Shining, and that was great. But I've also found comfort in bookish stories like The Lost for Words Bookshop and The Midnight Library. How about you?
