I'm giving this a pick in spite of some silly aspects (like how hung up characters are about hair color) because it's just fun to read. I had to listen to the last couple of chapters three times and check out the ebook to figure out what exactly had happened, but aside from that, the twists and turns were fun. The characters in this one are especially interesting. I would like to read a whole novel about Anna Scheele.

Victoria Jones decides to go to Baghdad in pursuit of a young man but finds herself caught up amongst intelligence agents trying to foil a shadowy organisation that wants to stoke tensions between the US and the USSR.

I enjoyed this more than most of the author's forays into spy fiction.

They Came to Baghdad is a spy story and murder mystery rolled into one. Felt a little different to the usual Agatha Christie, but I liked that.

A different kind of Christie story, this one has a MC that quickly became a favorite. If only Victoria could be involved in more espionage & adventure. She‘s a creative liar, can get herself out of dangerous situations, & is kind. A good audiobook. My 75th book this year, which means I‘ve achieved my GR goal!

Smrloomis Wow, 75 books is awesome!! 🥳 2y
Scochrane26 @Smrloomis Thanks! The last 3 years I‘ve read a lot more, but I think I‘ve been more social & working a lot this year. Probably about half has been audio because of my commute. (edited) 2y
Smrloomis @Scochrane26 I‘m close to 75 also but read more graphic novels this year. I think those actually helped me read more overall! A mix of formats works well for me 😊 2y

Christie leaps into the spy thriller genre. The plot involves many people - some are professional spies, some are bystanders & some are adventurous & smart women who by happenstance are brought together in Baghdad to undermine a Fifth Column - style plot to wreak worldwide chaos. I never tied her to politics, but this was written near the start of the Cold War & writers write what they think about, so. The engaging characters make it a good read.

Ironically, another espionage novel that I picked up while getting another espionage novel. Homegirl in this book met a stranger, and in the two minutes of talking to him, fell in love and decided to follow him to Baghdad because he mentioned he was going there. She‘s clever enough to pull it off and if advances the plot, but MAN that is a lot for a guy!

I don't remember ever noticing this before when I read this book! The good old early days of commercial air travel 🙂

Cathythoughts Yes ! I remember years ago they handed out sweets for every one in case your ears popped. ... now ( well before covid ) my ears never popped anymore 4y
MommyWantsToReadHerBook @Cathythoughts cool that it was recent enough that you still experienced it (the sweets) 🙂 4y

Day 9, book 13. Passenger to Frankfurt wasn‘t the usual Agatha, and, as it happens, wasn‘t for me. I‘m going back to her more traditional format.

Finishing tonight at 20 hours and much further along than I thought I‘d be at this point. #24B42020

This book is kind of a mystery, but more a spy thriller. I found it hard to care about the Big Dark Situation at the beginning. That said, once the focus lands on Victoria Jones, this book is a fun little spin. An unabashed liar & thrill-seeker, she is also charming & smart & exactly the right amateur spy & detective to tackle this international intrigue. I loved her &, despite the twist being easy to call, I found her journey fun to follow.

On my list on re-reading Agatha Christie books in publication order - definitely one of my least favorites. Stick with the Poirots and Marples and skip this one.

I loved this! It was so delightfully bonkers and packed a lot into its pages. Makes modern thrillers feel bloated by comparison. @YouBookMe thanks for prompting me to pick this one up!

Trust me to never follow instructions -- my #5fordinner has got to become #dinnerfor6. Six of the smartest, most well-rounded writers, past or present, I could want in one room (and what I think they'd be drinking). Politics, archaeology, philosophy, and civics would all be on the table.

🥃 Barbara Mertz
🍷 Alexander Hamilton
🍸 Dame Agatha Christie
🥃 Alexander McCall Smith
🍸 Hillary Rodham Clinton
🍷 L. Junius Columella

Natasha.C.Barnes Wow, this is fascinating! I love it. I don't have one of your emojis, though--what are Barbara and Alexander drinking? 7y

Couldn't get hold of a Miss Marple... this is just as fun though! I'd forgotten how whimsical these books are. This is more of a spy novel than I detective story, written in an era when you could just go abroad as a companion on a whim! Easy, fun read. #agathachristie #spy #detective #murder #booklover #readingalone

For #setinthemiddleeast

Agatha Christie loved this region of the world and set many of her books there. This is just one of them.

JazzFeathers I don't think l've ever heard of this 8y
Rachbb3 @JazzFeathers It's a good one. I read it years ago. She has so many books. I've been collecting the paperbacks for some time. I'm almost done. 😁 8y
Sydsavvy National Geographic just had a great article about her and her travels. Very neat. 8y

Well, pretty fun read. The romance wasn't too bad this time round, and Victoria can be quite fun as a main character, though my favorite is probably Dr Pauncefoot Jones, who was really quite funny at times.

Why on earth does the blurb at the back reveal something that only happens 120+ pages into the book!? At any rate this looks more like a thriller than a mystery.
