Armageddon in Retrospect | Kurt Vonnegut
27 posts | 33 read | 23 to read
The New York Times bestseller-a "gripping" posthumous collection of previously unpublished work by Kurt Vonnegut on the subject of war. A fitting tribute to a literary legend and a profoundly humane humorist, Armageddon in Retrospect is a collection of twelve previously unpublished writings on war and peace. Imbued with Vonnegut's trademark rueful humor and outraged moral sense, the pieces range from a letter written by Vonnegut to his family in 1945, informing them that he'd been taken prisoner by the Germans, to his last speech, delivered after his death by his son Mark, who provides a warmly personal introduction to the collection. Taken together, these pieces provide fresh insight into Vonnegut's enduring literary genius and reinforce his ongoing moral relevance in today's world. From the Trade Paperback edition.

With an intro by his son, KV (a POW in Germany WW2) writes about war in a way that bleeds the kind of irony in which you shake your head in futility-or cry. I listened to the audio which was narrated by the inimitable Rip Torn (May he Rest In Peace).

I started reading this book in what I‘m going to refer to as “the before” every time after I‘d pick it up, want to read it, and then put it down. I kept trying because it wasn‘t that I did not enjoy the stories & essays. Wailing Shall Be In All Streets is one I STILL think about. It was purely my own sadness that kept me from finishing this terrific book.

Sorry I‘ve been gone from Litsy for ages! I got locked out of my account and it took a while to rectify. Anyway, here‘s what I‘m currently reading between studying for my comprehensive exams and work on my current writing project.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐(5)

(Read 1/9/2019)

Short stories + lots of artwork = faster than usual reading speed. Also, the edition I read did not have that green cover.

Vonnegut's unique perspective on war is showcased in the posthumously published collection.

Having a hard time concentrating on the tagged book because of the leak/disaster under our kitchen sink, so instead I'm planning out a new journal for 2019. A horrible January means the year can only get better, right? Happy Friday!

LiteraryinPA Oh no! Hope it gets fixed soon! 6y
SleepyDragon @LiteraryinLititz We have to replace the faucet, which won't happen till Tuesday at the earliest. As for the bottom of the cabinet ... we are still assessing damage. Really, we need a whole new kitchen, but that is years down the road. 6y

Only got to read about a half hour on New Year's Day, but got to start the tagged book, so yay!

#24b42019 final update:
11 hours, 13 minutes (My goal was double digits, so, again, yay!)
4 books read, 1 started
1 book of poetry
2 volumes of comics
1 Dickens novella
680 pages

Thanks to @TheReadingMermaid and @Andrew65 for hosting the fun end of the year #readathon.

Now to get going on 2019 goals ...

BeansPage Woohoo!!!!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🎉🎉🎉🎉 6y
Andrew65 Brilliant effort, well done. 😊🙌👍👏 Good luck on your 2019 goals. 6y

1. 27
2. My GR goal was 10, but I use it as a minimum, not a challenge. I met my #MtTBRChallenge goal of 18, and I'm plugging away at #readharder2018. At this point, 30 books by the end of the year seems realistic and within reach.
3. Nightwoods by Frazier, though The Nix by Nathan Hall was a close second.
4. I don't really read new releases, but there are many in my TBR that I'm looking forward to getting around to. Such as tagged.

Armageddon in Retrospect is a collection of twelve previously unpublished works consisting mostly of short stories, released posthumously, all related to war. Kurt‘s son, Mark, added a nice introduction and included a copy of the letter he wrote to his family during WWII informing them that he was taken as a POW by the Germans in Dresden. The stories are typical of KV, some are funny and some are poignant and will rip your heart out. KV is missed.

batsy That quote is brilliant. 7y
Billypar I know this question is joked about so much by authors and others but I like to defend young readers and writers who ask it in earnest- what a great response for the questioner to absorb. 7y

Too much snow for the patio furniture but I‘m officially declaring it the start of the outside reading season! Hanging with BFF Brittney and the always delightful Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.

Mehso-so

This is a tricky one, it's a collection of his writings published on the anniversary of KV's death... some were laugh-out-loud funny... some weren't. Worth a read even if only for the speech his son delivered in his place 2 weeks after his death. The introduction (by his son) also gives a real sense of who he was and how and why he wrote the way he did.

"Where do I get my ideas from? You might as well have asked that of Beethoven. He was goofing around in Germany like everybody else, and all of a sudden this stuff came gushing out of him. It was music. I was goofing around like everybody else in Indiana, and all of a sudden stuff came gushing out. It was disgust with civilization."

This posthumously published collection of essays, shorts stories, and sketches is a must-read for Vonnegut fans.

Redwritinghood Can you imagine if he were still alive today what might come "gushing out"? Somehow, I think he might have had a lot of disgust with civilization lately. ? 7y

#TBRtemptation post! This is a collection of essays by the legendary author published one year after his death. All the material here was unpublished beforehand, and we all know how compelling posthumous work can be. As always, Vonnegut illustrates his wit in poking fun at the human condition regarding aspects of armed conflicts, as in War being a funny thing but having nothing funny about it. KV fans want to get this. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

TheBookDream Of course this is posted just AFTER I left the bookstore...after being there for 8 hours 🙄 8y

I keep giving my personal copy of this book to people and then I find myself buying another copy. It's just one of those books I think everyone should read and my bookshelf is incomplete without it.

My advice to writers just starting out? Don't use semi-colons! They are transvestite hermaphrodites, representing exactly nothing. All they do is suggest you might have gone to college.
