Speedy: The Story of One Mexican in the Vietnam War | Francisco Elizalde-Castañeda
9 posts
Many years after fighting in the Vietnam War, Elizalde decided to write this book which was dormant in his subconscious all that time. Not everyone in the war fought the frontlines of battle as it is depicted in the movies. Instead, many of them provided support services to the Infantry and the Marines in many ways: transportation, administration, and graves registration - where Elizalde served. For him being a Hero is someone who gives his life to defend his country. However, in this case, there was no reason for these soldiers to fight. They were deceived just like all the American people. One thing is certain, they served as cannon fodder. They were there to protect the interest not of the American people, but rather those of the commercial and military establishments who yield the power and do not care about wasting money and innocent lives. The author hopes that this book will be able to give the reader another perspective on the Vietnam War. Some of the names in this book have been change to protect their privacy.

I can only do this if I‘m

1. Really used to the narrator (like Bahni Turpin)
2. Generally only professional VO artists because they speak more clearly (like Bahni Turpin)
3. And only if I‘m just listening to the book and not doing anything else besides listening to the book

#megaspeed #speedfreaks @Cinfhen

And yes, I finished the last 4.5 hours after dinner this way!

Cinfhen That‘s INSANE!!!!! #SpeedFreak #MegaSpeed 😘 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen it is kind of crazy! I listened to my first book at 1.25x four years ago. Now here I am! 🤷ðŸ»â€â™€ï¸ðŸ‘ðŸ»ðŸ‘🻠4y
squirrelbrain Whoa- that is just ridiculous! 🤪 4y

rockpools 😂😂😂 Wow! 4y
Megabooks @squirrelbrain @rockpools what can I say, I just keep turning it up!! 😂😂 4y
Hooked_on_books I‘m not quite that fast, though I was able to cut Roots from a 30 hour listen to 15 with my standard 2x. My current listen is on 2.2. That thought of listening to it at standard speed is a little unbearable. Though with some books, that might be ok. 4y
janeycanuck Wow! I think I‘ve gone as fast as 1.7x. You are dedicated. 4y
Daisey Wow! I frequently listen at 1.5 and I think I‘ve gotten up to 2.0 a few times, but I don‘t think I‘ve gone any faster. @jewright this is relevant to our discussion yesterday. 4y
JulAnna @Hooked_on_books Roots is one of my all time favorite reads- what is the audiobook like? Cast or one narrator? Would you recommend? 4y
Megabooks @Hooked_on_books I did the same with Ducks, Newburyport, which was over 40! I listen to that one as high as 2.2, but it was too fast all ready to turn it up! 4y
Megabooks @Daisey yeah, I don‘t know how I do it, but it still makes sense, so I go with it! 4y
Hooked_on_books @JulAnna Highly recommend! It‘s a single narrator, Avery Brooks, whose rich, lush voice is like a balm in your ears. He could read an economics textbook and I‘d listen to it. Fabulous! 4y
jewright @Daisey I‘m always comfortable at 1.75, but I really haven‘t tried any faster than that, and I‘m always doing some kind of work when I listen to audiobooks. This is impressive! (edited) 4y
Megabooks @jewright thanks!! It depends on the narrator for me. I rarely go that fast, but 2.0 is my usual default! 4y
Reviewsbylola 1.25 is usually my preferred speed and I have to be doing something else too, typically it‘s cleaning. 🤪 4y
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola yeah, I listen between 1.75-2.0 when I‘m cleaning, depending on the narrator. 4y

I‘m a few days behind on Litsy posts, but I haven‘t seen this in my feed yet and thought it was interesting. My results indicate that I could finish 59 books/year if I read 30 minutes a day. See for yourself: http://mentalfloss.com/article/570929/how-many-books-to-read-year-test?utm_sourc...

Beatlefan129 That‘s pretty cool! I got 38 books per year, although I think I read faster on paper than I do on my phone 6y
Melismatic You‘re quick! I did the test and got 23 books a year if I read 30 mins a day! 6y
Lauram @Melismatic @Beatlefan129 I think I was faster than normal because I‘m kinda hopped up on caffeine. This test fails to consider the numerous variables that interrupt my reading: fatigue, food, cat, other people, work. I could go on but I‘m sure you get it. 😉 It was a fun quiz! (edited) 6y

CouronneDhiver I read 2 1/2 times slower than you, according to these stats. It is a fun quiz though ðŸ‘🽠6y
JackOBotts So fun! I got 25 in a year...sounds about right! ðŸ‘🼠6y
edennugget Thanks so much for sharing! This was so interesting. I got 54 a year. So reassuring to know that reading for only half an hour every day will still allow for a very respectable 54 books! 6y

Take the test to see how many books you could read in 2019, based on your reading speed: https://www.lenstore.co.uk/vc/a-novel-approach/?fb_action_ids=10156673454885520&...

cherinium Well, it appears as if you read twice as fast as me, because I got exactly half that number. 🤪 I'm ok with that, though. I've always known I am a slow reader. I always had a hard time completing timed tests in school, and I knew it was because it just took me longer to read the questions. 6y
StellarDoc @cherinium I've been told many times that I'm a fast reader. I was just curious to see how many books the test thought I could read in a year. 6y

I didn‘t get an amazing score, but I thought this was fun! http://projects.wsj.com/speedread/

Bookzombie Apparently I‘m more of an average reader than I thought. This was interesting, but I would be curious to do the test with fiction samples. 6y

I figured I‘d try this too. I read around the speed of high level executives. I think when I was in school I read more quickly because I had to, though. I could read War and Peace in under 18 hours and I can read about 2 books on a Kindle Fire before a battery recharge is needed (this is about right!).
