From the B&N Discover Great New Writers Award-winning author of The Lightkeepers, comes a page-turning new novel that explores the bond between siblings and the animal instincts that threaten to destroy them. Mercy, Oklahoma became infamous when a Category Five tornado ravaged the small town. No family was more devastated than the McClouds: four siblings left orphaned, their home and farm demolished. Darlene, Jane, and Cora became the media focus of the tornado's aftermath, causing great tension with their brother, Tucker, who soon abandoned his sisters to their grief and disappeared. On the three-year anniversary of the tornado, a cosmetics factory outside of Mercy is bombed, and the lab animals trapped within are released. This violent act appears at first to have nothing to do with "the saddest family in Mercy." Then Tucker reappears, injured from the blast, and seeks the help of nine-year-old Cora. Caught up in the thrall of her brilliant, charismatic brother, whom she has desperately missed, Cora agrees to accompany Tucker on his cross-country mission to save animals and make war on human civilization. Cora becomes her brother's unwitting accomplice, taking on a new identity while engaging in acts of escalating violence. Darlene works with Mercy police to find her siblings, leading to an unexpected showdown at a zoo in Southern California, as Tucker erases the boundaries between the human and animal world. The Wildlands is another remarkable literary thriller from critically acclaimed writer Abby Geni, one that examines what happens when one family becomes trapped in the tenuous space between wild and tame, human and animal.

Day 24 - Wild

This was the first book that popped into my head when I saw wild. Both the name and the cover are fitting.

I was a big fan of Geni's other novel, The Lightkeepers, so I was excited to read this and pretty much went in blind. I'd say that's the way to go - boy, was it an unexpected journey! Such a unique premise filled with memorable characters, palpable tension, and thought-provoking insights on the complex relationship between humanity and nature. I'm sure it will stay with me for some time!

I just couldn‘t get into this novel, despite having read half. I then skipped to the Epilogue. 😐 I‘m disappointed because I really liked Geni‘s previous two novels.

Any US Litten interested in having it? It‘s even a signed copy. First to request has dibs. 👍🏾

TrishB You say dibs in US too 😁 6y
StellarDoc I'd love it! 6y

This book was a quick read and I felt it was entertaining. I wouldn't say this is one of the best I've read but the plot was a bit different than books I've read recently. A little predictable but it was a good reflection on family, loss, and values.

Cora, youngest of 4, never knew her mother who died just giving birth to her. She was raised by her oldest sister who stepped into the place of their parents after a tornado rips through town, taking their father & leaving them orphans. Months later their brother Tucker runs away, leaving the girls to fend for themselves. The most tragic family in Mercy, OK gets hit by another horror on the 3rd anniversary of the tornado: 9yo Cora disappears. 👇🏻

mrozzz (Cont‘d) The story flawlessly shines a light on what really matters when you're forced to choose between your own life and doing what's right. Geni's writing absolutely blew me away. Her scenes and descriptions of place/emotion were so visceral that I had to pace myself, and take breaks to just think about the actions of the characters and the force of Geni's words. So good. 6y
RadicalReader @mrozzz you have wonderful taste in books. I have recently enjoyed some wonderful audiobooks I highly recommend the terrific novel that is read by David Spade as an audiobook. The novel is called Almost Interesting by David Spade 6y
mrozzz That means a lot! 😊 @RadicalReader I‘ll look that up for sure 6y

I could not put this book down. I just loved it. It‘s a family saga that begins with a tragedy and just keeps on going in a way that makes you wonder how they do it. Somehow I missed Lightkeepers, but it‘s now on my TBR.

A thrilling pageturner that explores the bonds between siblings, the forces that drive the most extreme actions, and the relationships between humans and animals. Like in her previous novel, The Lightkeepers, Geni is so adept at establishing vivid settings and ominous atmospheres.

Pick! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Unusual story: after a tornado devastates their family, 4 orphans live together in a trailer just trying to scrape by. The brother, Tucker, runs off, fueled by extreme animal activism. Things get worse when he kidnaps the youngest sister and goes on a muderous spree to save animals and avenge their mistreatment.

So happy to get a copy of this! Question for you knowledgeable Littens: I have several ARCs to read that won‘t be published until later in the year. Should I read and post reviews now, or wait until closer to the publication date? Some publishers have said to wait, but some offer no communication at all. What‘s the usual rule?
