The Oxford English Dictionary
The Oxford English Dictionary: Single User Windows Version | John A. Simpson

The Oxford English Dictionary is the internationally recognized authority on the evolution of the English language from 1150 to the present day. The Dictionary defines over 500,000 words and traces their usage through 2.5 million illustrative quotations from a wide range of literary and other sources. It is an unsurpassed guide to the meaning, pronunciation, and history of the English language. This new version of The Oxford English Dictionary (Second Edition) on CD-ROM thus offers unparalleled access to the world's most important reference work for the English language. The text of this version has been augmented with the inclusion of the Oxford English Dictionary Additions Series (Volumes 1-3), published in 1993 and 1997, the Bibliography to the Second Edition, and other ancillary material. New Features *The powerful Advanced search makes it possible to make use of the full potential of the OED. Complex search expressions can be built through the use of Boolean operators, case-sensitive searching, exact character searching, restricting searches to previous search results, searching in pronunciations, and an extended range of wildcard options *A new installation option makes it possible to run the Dictionary from the hard disk *The Automatic Look-up feature enables fast access to OED headwords from any Microsoft Office 97 or 2000 application. This feature can be used within the OED CD-ROM itself to look up words in the definition or quotation text System requirements: PC with minimum 200 MHz Pentium-class processor; 32 MB RAM (64 MB recommended); 16-speed CD-ROM drive (32-speed recommended); Windows 95, 98, Me, NT, 2000, or XP (Local administrator rights are required to install and open the OED for the first time on a PC running Windows NT 4 and to install and run the OED on Windows 2000 and XP); 1.1 GB hard disk space to run the OED from the CD-ROM and 1.7 GB to install the CD-ROM to the hard disk: SVGA monitor: 800 x 600 pixels: 16-bit (64k, high color) setting recommended.

#two4tuesday

1. Anyone who writes is a writer. An author could be considered as a published writer, someone who writes as a career. But basically, I view them as synonyms.

2. I am a writer. I write fiction for fun and I have published professionally.

Thanks for the tag @Eggs

Gissy We need to read those! 🤗📚❤️❤️❤️ 2y
wanderinglynn @Gissy read my horrible half-written fiction? Or my professional publication, which is legal and boring unless you like environmental law. 😆😆😆 2y
TheSpineView Thanks for playing! 2y
Gissy @wanderinglynn Well, maybe both or I could follow your recommendation🤗 2y

#OnThisDay in 1928, 44 years 2 months and 19 days after it began, publication of the Oxford English Dictionary was completed. This 125th and final fascicle covered words from Wise to Wyzen (Sorry X,Y,Z!) and was edited by Charles Onions and William Craigie. JRR Tolkien was one of the volunteers working on this final fascicle, researching the etymology for Germanic words like waggle and wampum. #HistoryGetsLIT

#OnThisDay in 1884, the first volume of what would become the Oxford English Dictionary was released. Covering A to Ant, it was originally titled A New English Dictionary on Historical Principles: Founded Mainly on the Materials Collected by The Philological Society (and breathe, phew!) Compilation of the first edition was a crowd-sourced, volunteer effort and total organizational chaos until Dr. James Murray took the lead in 1879. #HistoryGetsLIT

Attagirl came up in an ARC set in New York in 1888. I'm certainly in the minority for noticing the historically inaccurate usage. Still, it bothers me. Bothered me so much that I had to check the OED too.

Ms_T I would have said this was an Americanism. I never use the word! 4y
julesG @Ms_T Americanism in New York City is fine by me. But it's used 30 years before its time. That's what bugs me. 4y
Birdsong28 No it would bother me as well. It should have been checked, can you use the report function on your kindle to suggest they change it 4y

julesG @Birdsong28 There's a report function? 😲 I'm definitely going to mention it in the comments to the publisher on Netgalley. 4y
Birdsong28 Glad to help 😘📚📖 4y
julesG @Birdsong28 Report doesn't work with ARCs. But, I'll keep it in mind for regular kindle books. 4y
Birdsong28 @julesG Did you try it or did you read it on that link as I have just tried on an arc and it let me 4y
julesG @Birdsong28 it didn't let me, I tried. Probably depends on the publisher, or so. 4y
Birdsong28 @julesG Just mention it in your review on Netgalley 4y
julesG @Birdsong28 Will definitely do. 4y
Ms_T @julesG That would bug me too! 4y
Crazeedi I hear you, things like this bother me too 4y
GingerAntics So it‘s easy to find. Why didn‘t the author do this quick search? So annoying. 4y

gradcat I wonder why...hmmm...can anyone think of anything? 6y
Tanisha_A The articles say it's because of (and it has multiple interpretations) - increase in usage of chemicals, gaseous substances; toxic relationships ; culture; #metoo movement; toxic air! 6y
gradcat @Tanisha_A I can think of another reason (he who shall go unnamed)! 6y
Tanisha_A @gradcat Absolutely! 6y

📚 Very loosely organized by genre
📚 The Dictionary
📚 All the time, my boyfriend thinks I'm weird
📚 I buy used all the time. If a cover is out dated or movie tie in I'll buy it, but I'll rebuy it if I find a better cover later.

#OnlyReadersUnderstand @nu-bibliophile

Melissa_J I‘m with your boyfriend, I think smelling books is weird, too. Which I gather from the responses to this question from other readers actually makes me the weird one 🤣🤣 6y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @Melissa_J well I suggest you try it. They smell so good. 😊 6y

I have a Pinterest board dedicated to words: https://pin.it/zkjmswe6554hbx & I also started a quasi-regular post on my blog called Word of the Day. I love interesting words!
