Deep within the Wood, a young woman lies dead. Not a mark on her body. No trace of her murderer. Only her chipped glass slippers hint at her identity. The Woodcutter, keeper of the peace between the Twelve Kingdoms of Man and the Realm of the Faerie, must find the maiden s killer before others share her fate. Guided by the wind and aided by three charmed axes won from the River God, the Woodcutter begins his hunt, searching for clues in the whispering dominions of the enchanted unknown. But quickly he finds that one murdered maiden is not the only nefarious mystery afoot: one of Odin s hellhounds has escaped, a pixie dust drug trade runs rampant, and more young girls go missing. Looming in the shadows is a malevolent, power-hungry queen, and she will stop at nothing to destroy the Twelve Kingdoms and annihilate the Royal Fae unless the Woodcutter can outmaneuver her and save the gentle souls of the Wood."

An interesting take on fairy tales and the power of the belief and magic. Interesting writing and ideas, not too dark but definitely a fairy tale.
The woodcutter must try to solve the mystery of where the magic is going and restore balance to the world.
3/5 read if you want a more abstract tale of the magic of belief and the power that secrets can hold.

catiewithac It has a nice cover 🪓 6d

Love, love, love, love, love this book. It‘s such an interesting spin on fairy tales and magic. The Gentleman is creepy, the Woodcutter is a wonderful hero… There‘s nothing I would have changed in the story. The author knows what they‘re doing, and they‘re doing it very well. The book works as it is, and any changes would make it a different story. It‘s written a lot like a fairy tale - don‘t expect to dig too deep into the characters.

This book was pretty good! Chalked full of stories that you will know from your childhood. I love fantasy/fairy tale books, so naturally i really liked this one!

The writing started off a bit stilted and uncomfortable but eventually found its pace as the story picked up. I enjoyed all of the fairytales woven into this but felt that the ending was a bit abrupt.

This was my 3rd audiobook. There's something strange about having someone read to you. Anyone else have to rewind a million times?
I liked how she tied together all of the fairy tales. It was different than anything I've read so I wasn't sure what was going to happen. I liked it, but I found myself wondering if I'd like it more or less if I read it myself. When they use different voices, it kinda takes away some of your imagination. 🤷‍♀️

I'm so sad my first read of 2019 was so disappointing, especially because it had such an interesting premise. A mish mash of folklore and fairytales, mythology and magic, this story of a woodcutter who is the protector of the 12 realms going on a mission to solve the mystery of a dead woman wearing glass slippers, this should have been a winner. But it was all over the place and a lot happened while nothing at all happened at the same time. Meh.

Cinfhen So far I bailed twice on my #FairytaleRetelling 🙄 6y
LoverofLit @Cinfhen It's a surprisingly touch topic to find a decent pick on. If you haven't read Cinder, I'd recommend. 6y
LoverofLit Thanks for the heads up! @4thhouseontheleft 6y
Cinfhen The steampunk aspect has me put off although I‘ve heard good things... 6y
LoverofLit @Cinfhen Steampunk is another one that is a tough topic to find a well written book on. I enjoyed Cinder for what it was. Much more than this one! Or Everland which is another terrible retelling (of Peter Pan) 6y
Cinfhen I‘ll try the library route... thanks for the suggestion 😉 6y

I'm giving up on this book at 25% because so far I find it to be only mediocre and I don't want to start the new year in the middle of a book that is meh.

Marilyncjackson I quit this book at about the same place for the same reason 6y
SaturnDoo I'm a firm believer in throwing a book into theDNF pile. Your only wasting precious time if you're not enjoying what your reading. 6y

This one was a bit of a struggle for me. I wanted to love it bc I adore fairytales, but I just couldn‘t get into it. I craved more character development. And the plot seemed too forced.

#Twinkle and her pillow pile. (Which was my pillow pile, until I got up off the couch for a moment and she laid claim to it). 🐶❤️🤷🏻‍♀️#dogsofLitsy

thegirlwiththelibrarybag One of the classic blunders... walking away from a pillow pile... 7y

My Kobo needs to charge, so I‘ve swiped the husband‘s Kindle and I‘m trying out one of the “Prime Reads” selection. Debating whether to get another, much more modern Kobo (because I have soooooo many books through them, and I really like their product) or get a Kindle, so I suppose this is a good test! 😉

JazzFeathers Noooooo! Keep diversity. Keep a Kobo! 7y
PenguinInFlight @JazzFeathers Kobo is winning, for sure. I don‘t even want to think about the money I‘ve spent on books in my Kobo (which is 372 books strong, and my Kobo Mini is now full😭), and then only be able read them on my phone. I want the Kobo Aura, I think. Maybe even the waterproof version so I can read in the pool and tub and not worry. I don‘t love the Kindle enough to switch. 7y
JazzFeathers @PenguinInFlight l own a simple Kobo e-reader, but l'd love an Aura 😍 7y

PenguinInFlight @JazzFeathers I‘ve had my Kobo Mini for years and I LOVE it. I wish they made one with a bigger memory, I would get the exact same thing...not that I wouldn‘t love an Aura. 😍But they are kind of pricey. 7y
shanaqui I did actually once write a guide on how to add memory to a Mini. Mine has a 32GB memory, installed by me. Would you like me to look for the link? It's a little bit technical, but as I recall I just followed a step by step list! 7y
PenguinInFlight OMG YES!!! That would be amazing! Thank you so much. 🤗♥️ I‘m not super technical, but my husband is, so he can help if I get stuck. ☺️ 7y
shanaqui Here we go! The links to programs may not all work but finding something similar should do the job. https://breathesbooks.com/2014/09/21/creating-more-storage-space-on-a-kobo/ 7y

I liked the premise, but not the execution. I realize the author was trying to mimic the distinctive style of old-world fairy tales, but it got annoying after a while. I wanted more whimsy and wonder, and slogging through the stilted writing just didn't do it for me. The premise could have been a lot of fun if handled with a lighter touch.

Quick read. Unique take on the fairy tale realm with guest appearances by some beloved characters such as Snow White, Rapunzel and Rumpelstiltskin.
