The Witch
The Witch: A History of Fear, from Ancient Times to the Present | Ronald Hutton
13 posts | 11 read | 28 to read
Why have societies all across the world feared witchcraft? This book delves deeply into its context, beliefs, and origins in Europe's history The witch came to prominence--and often a painful death--in early modern Europe, yet her origins are much more geographically diverse and historically deep. In this landmark book, Ronald Hutton traces witchcraft from the ancient world to the early-modern stake. This book sets the notorious European witch trials in the widest and deepest possible perspective and traces the major historiographical developments of witchcraft. Hutton, a renowned expert on ancient, medieval, and modern paganism and witchcraft beliefs, combines Anglo-American and continental scholarly approaches to examine attitudes on witchcraft and the treatment of suspected witches across the world, including in Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, Australia, and North and South America, and from ancient pagan times to current interpretations. His fresh anthropological and ethnographical approach focuses on cultural inheritance and change while considering shamanism, folk religion, the range of witch trials, and how the fear of witchcraft might be eradicated.

It could be very fascinating! But it‘s kind of dull.

One of my favourite history books I‘ve read. It‘s certainly dense but very readable for academic history, the author has incredible global knowledge and writes rigorously, clearly, and occasionally even entertainingly (an achievement with this topic). I‘ve learned so much and been able to explain it to my bf in detail which I think is the mark of a great nf book.

mklong Thanks for posting this! After reading Stacy Schiff‘s book about the Salem trials, I have been looking for one that covers the broader history 4y
Emilymdxn @mklong this one has a lot of global context but is most specifically interested in European early modern witch trials, doesn‘t cover Salem specifically but might be good for European and global background! 4y
mklong That‘s exactly what I‘m looking for. Thanks! 4y
mklong If you are interested, this interactive map of the Scottish Witch hunts is amazing... https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/map-visualizes-scale-16th-and-17th-cen... 4y

Today I came into central London for my flu shot 💉 I feel so lucky to have been able to book one there are awful shortages all over the country, but it wasn‘t possible to give my slot away to someone else so thought I should get it after all. Sitting in an empty coffee shop to recover while my arm aches looking out at the pretty buildings and reading about witches for #scarathlon2020

I have to go to Chicago today for training for work for the next couple days, so I‘ve downloaded The Witch to watch on my flight. This will be a horror movie I haven‘t seen, so I‘m intrigued by it. #Scarathlon #TeamStoker (1 pt horror movie, 1 pt participation)

This book was great! Very academic, and therefore very thorough. I especially appreciated learning a little bit of witchy rituals from around the world — as opposed to just Europe. You get a bit of everything. #bookreview #witchyreads #nonfiction #audiobook

It‘s 1000 degrees outside in Houston but I‘m on this total Halloween spooky type reading kick. Maybe it‘s wishful thinking for fall.
