Son of the Shadows
Son of the Shadows: Book Two of the Sevenwaters Trilogy | Juliet Marillier
16 posts | 52 read | 10 to read
Son of the Shadows is the sequel to Juliet Marillier's evocative first novel Daughter of the Forest. It continues the saga of beautiful Sorcha, the courageous young woman who risked all to save her family from a wicked curse and whose love shattered generations of hate and bridged two cultures. It is from her sacrifice that her brothers were brought home to Sevenwaters and her life has known much joy. But not all the brothers were able to escape the spell that transformed them into swans, and those who did were all more--and less--than they were before the change. It is left to Sorcha's daughter Liadan who will take up the tale that the Sevenwaters clan is destined to fulfill. Beloved child, dutiful daughter, she embarks on a journey that opens her eyes to the wonders of the world around her...and shows her just how hard-won was the peace that she has known all her life.Liadan will need all of her courage to help save her family, for there are forces far darker than anyone chould have guessed and ancient powers conspiring to destroy this family's peace--and their world. And she will need the strength to stand up to those she loves best, for in the finding of her own true love, Liadan's course may doom them all...or be their salvation.

I hate that I didn‘t love this more. Perhaps my expectations were too high after adoring the first in the series but I found myself bored in many places. The stakes weren‘t as high in this book and for me the plot a bit too similar to book one in some ways as well. Hopefully this sets up a stellar third novel which I will read eventually.

This was an amazing sequel. Marillier has created some powerful women in her stories and I love it. Can‘t wait to start the next book!

This installment didn't quite give me the same pleasure as the first. It lagged quite a bit for me at the end and felt largely like a stepping stone to the third book. On the other hand, it introduced really interesting characters whose stories I look forward to reading about. All the same, I think I'll take a breather from Sevenwaters for a spell and revisit a series I haven't touched in a while - let's hope this sequel is stronger!

Afraid I might have already guessed the twist ._.
Still enjoying myself though .--.

Marillier writes my kind of female protagonist — a strong woman whose weapon is her brain, not a sword. This is the second in a series based on Irish folklore. It was sappy and melodramatic at times but I liked it. The narrator did the most amazing job. I swear I thought there was a whole cast of narrators, but it was just one woman with some mad voice skills. 4⭐️s

I liked this continuation in the Sevenwaters series. I still love Daughter of the Forest more, but this was a good book. Gutwrenching, but good.

My Mother's Day gift: a baby-free hour with my current read at my favorite coffee shop! With thanks to @pocketmermaid for the lovely book sleeve to protect a borrowed book while I am out and about!

Baby is napping so I'm on a reading break. Set my book down to answer a text and Walter the dog decided it would make a nice pillow 🐶🐶📖📖

ReadingVampire One of my favorite books!!!! 7y
Zelma Of course it would. Books or my iPad always seem to be my cats' preference for napping spots. 7y
ElyssaReads @Puredragonstar me too! First reread in at least 8 years and am loving it all over again! 7y

ElyssaReads @Zelma ha! I wouldn't think an iPad would be very comfortable! 7y
ReadingVampire @ElyssaReads I wish more people would read at least these first three they were so good 😊. I want to reread them again soon. 7y
Zelma @ElyssaReads there can an open table with nothing else on it and they always go for the iPad. 🙄 7y
ElyssaReads @Puredragonstar I agree! Have you read any of the books that come after the trilogy? I read Heir to Sevenwaters a few weeks ago which inspired me to reread the first three but haven't read any of the others. 7y
ReadingVampire @ElyssaReads I actually have but honestly they didn't leave as much as of an impression as the first three. I have to reread them all. 7y

I wish it were still the weekend, and I did not have to work! Oh well.

I loved this book. Liadan was such an engrossing character, and her strength was so inspiring. The romance was absolutely lovely, despite lacking picture perfection.

This novel was powerfully feminine. I am not sure I can do its beauty justice in this review. I will be rereading it for years to come.

A selection of books with some favorite couples for #InTheMoodForLove

Out of these, Bran & Liadan and Arin & Kestrel are probably my favorites. Two of these novels aren't very romance-y and all, but I still love the couple in them. Sadly, I have some of my top favs only on e reader and wouldn't make a great picture so couldn't include them.

B.Reader I have had Uprooted on my TBR for ages but somehow keep putting it off. Can you give me your thoughts on it? 8y
Otherworld_Library @B.Reader It's one of my favorite books! Not everyone loves it, seems to go one way or the other. It felt like one big fleshed out Grimm fairy tale to me. If you like earthy witchy stories and magic then you may like it as well. 8y

This was just okay compared to the first book in the series. There are a couple plot things I had issues with but still really enjoyed the lyrical writing and descriptions.

I'm rereading this book right now and it's even better the second (okay, third. Okay, fourth) time around. The characters are amazing and strong and I think this is my favorite book in the Sevenwaters series.
