Finished my November #doublespin just under the wire!

First, I have to say that I think Walter Mosley is awesome and extremely gifted...but this book wasn't really for me. There was so much going on that I had a difficult time keeping everything and everyone straight (which isn't a typical issue for me). On the plus side, I zoomed through the last few chapters and I thought it wrapped up nicely (for the most part).

Library mystery book club. I didn‘t think I‘d like this one but I actually really did and I love the character Melquarth. He‘s great. I‘d like more of him. We are doing a virtual meeting and I hope it goes okay.

Playing catch-up! I really liked the story here, and the characters were great. Very gritty noir, detective with a past and some major character flaws, but likable all the same. The daughter is my favorite character.

Walter Mosley is brilliant, and this is a great read. Joe King Oliver is a complex and interesting character and I want to read, and know more about Melquarth Frost.

Joe Oliver King, ex- NYPD cop, turned private detective after being wrongfully imprisoned for a crime he did not it commit. Eventually, he is released after spending time at the infamous Riker‘s Island. King opens up a private detective firm, and enlists the help of his daughter, Asia, to clear his name and help exonerate an innocent man on death row. This book is definitely a page turner.

Ripped through this New York noir in one go; love Walter Mosley from his first Easy Rawlings (thanks, Dad). Joe King Oliver was a NY policeman who was framed, and put in solitary at Rikers until one day he was suddenly freed. His life and family are destroyed, now he survives as a PI. He‘s after who framed a black militant &those who framed him; he must balance his own values as he seeks clarity with help from a psychopath , and his grandmother.

This was my first Walter Mosley book. I listened to the audio and was impressed with the narrator. A noir crime story with two plots that converge. Contemporary issues. One is modeled after the real Philadelphia convicted “cop killer”, Mamia Abu Jamal, pictured here. Mosley is considered a master of this genre, and he doesn‘t disappoint. The only thing that I found disturbing was the main character‘s sexual conduct and his analysis of women.

Walter Mosley is a master of the craft. Is there any writer who writes as broadly or diversely? Here, Mosley returns to his roots...the Private Investigator mystery and it shines. In one book, he has developed characters who you root for and you want to succeed. The relationship between Joe King Oliver and his daughter, Aja-Denise, is especially touching and real. A seriously satisfying read.

...is one of the many books in my Public Library Association conference haul. The FedEx box came today :-)

My first Mosley! The complicated ex-cop-turned-private-detective angle was executed well with Joe King Oliver. I love King‘s relationship with his daughter and his partner Mel, a hardened criminal with a dark past. The ending was not what I anticipated; I LOVE how it turned out. My issue here is there are so many secondary characters, too many for me to keep up with. But overall a pick.

Also: Dion Graham narrates the audio, it‘s GREAT 🙌🏻🙌🏻

It was awesome meeting Walter Mosley... Didn‘t realize that he writes TV series too, for FX for the show “Snowfall”...He is in the process of writing a musical “Devil in a Blue Dress”, which also is one of his Easy Rawlings Mysteries”... One thing I loved about him is that he kept it real & held nothing back... He had us constantly laughing... 😂

One of the things I loved about being an audiobook blogger back when audiobooks were really just beginning to boom was the relationships I made with some of the narrators. Occasionally, even though I‘m not as involved one of my favorites will message me and tell me I just have to read this. Not so I‘ll review but just because they know I‘ll love it and it‘s important to them. I‘ve learned when Dion Graham recommends a book to me I should listen.

Facebook's ad algorithms have really figured out that books are my jam, it's pretty much all I see 😂. On a side note, this book sounds really good! Though wrongful conviction stories make me so sad and Rikers is the WORST. Has anyone heard anything about this book or read anything else by Walter Mosley? He'd be a new-to-me author.
