Tales from Earthsea | Ursula K. Le Guin
21 posts | 44 read | 29 to read
The tales of this book, as Ursula K. Le Guin writes in her introduction, explore or extend the world established by her first four Earthsea novels. Yet each stands on its own."The Finder," a novella set a few hundred years before A Wizard of Earthsea, presents a dark and troubled Archipelago and shows how some of its customs and institutions came to be. "The Bones of the Earth" features the wizards who taught the wizard who first taught Ged and demonstrates how humility, if great enough, can contend with an earthquake. "Darkrose and Diamond" is a delightful story of young courtship showing that wizards sometimes pursue alternative careers. "On the High Marsh" tells of the love of power-and of the power of love. "Dragonfly" shows how a determined woman can break the glass ceiling of male magedom. Concluding with an account of Earthsea's history, people, languages, literature, and magic, this collection also features two new maps of Earthsea. This ebook includes a sample chapter ofTHE OTHER WIND.

I stayed up way too late to finish this one. I'm really loving this series though. One of the stories in this made me literally sob cry. I know a lot of people have read, and loved, this series as teens but I'm not sure my teenage self would have appreciated them back then. Certainly some of it, but not all. Grateful I read these at the right time for me.

This volume is comprised of a variety of stories further exploring Earthsea. Dragonfly especially was excellent, and it "bridges" the end of the fourth volume, Tehanu, to the last book of the series.

I just read and reread Ursula K LeGuin's foreword to Tales from Earthsea hanging on every word. Such an amazing writer! And with these words, I'm ready to dive in!

4.5/5⭐ Le Guin is a master of writing stories with depthless layers. It's almost exhausting reading her work because there's SO MUCH in the words she uses and in between. But the experience is incredible.

I particularly loved the found father-son relationship in “The Bones of the Earth.“

I'm waiting for the whole dragon-human thing from “Dragonfly“ and the end of Tehanu to make a little more sense in where it fits in the world/lore of Earthsea.

#7days7covers Thanks for a tag, @Erofan, though I'm a bit slow 😉 When I think about books that have had an enduring impact on my life, #Earthsea comes to mind immediately. I didn't have a chance to read it during my childhood, but when I finally did - it was such a fulfilling book! With an exciting plot, deep sense of human nature, and perfectly beautiful 😍 I've reread it countless times ever since...

Last night was a recovery night. I came home from work, made dinner, and spent the rest of the evening on the sofa with books until it got dark. And oh it felt lovely!

I‘ve seen mixed reviews for this, and I often have that feeling myself about collections of short stories—but I loved this additional background for the Earthsea novels: the founding of the school on Roke, the story of the earthquake on Gont, a glimpse of Ged as archmage, and a wonderful bridge from Tehanu into the final novel (now I can‘t wait to read The Other Wind). Darkrose & Diamond was the only story I felt didn‘t add much—I loved the rest.

BarbaraJean @Bronte_Chintz Here‘s my review! Would love to hear your thoughts when you read it. 😊 6y

I got home from vacation on Saturday night, & have been lazy about Litsy-ing now that I‘m back at work. But here‘s my vacation reading/buying stack & stats!

Books brought: bottom 4 (read all)
Books bought: top 3 (read 1)
eBooks checked out from the library—tagged but not pictured: 1 (read)
Total books read on vacation: 6
Impact on TBR: -4 +3 -1 = TBR total is down by 2. Well. It‘s not nothing. (Now I need to catch up on my reviews!)

BarbaraJean @TheKidUpstairs YES! Of the three I bought, it‘s the one I read. All of it, the same day I bought it! 😍 6y

Even if we are present at some historic event, do we comprehend it—can we even remember it—until we can tell it as a story? And for events in times or places outside our own experience, we have nothing to go on but the stories other people tell us. ... The event is real NOW, but once it‘s THEN, its continuing reality is entirely up to us, dependent on our energy and honesty.

In anticipation of my soon running out of vacation reading material, I went and checked this out through Libby. 😁

Bronte_Chintz I just bought this! Please let me know what you think, I‘ve heard such mixed things! 6y
Leniverse @Bronte_Chintz It‘s short stories, so they flesh out the world a bit. The final story provides a bridge of sorts between Tehanu and The Other Wind. It‘s not as good as the novels, but it‘s a part of the whole. 6y
Bronte_Chintz @Leniverse thanks ducky! 6y
BarbaraJean @Bronte_Chintz I‘ll have to tag you when I finish! Thank you, @Leniverse ! I thought about skipping straight to The Other Wind, since this seemed “extra,”—so it‘s good to know there‘s some intermediate material linking Tehanu and The Other Wind. 6y
Leniverse Yes, definitely read at least Dragonfly. LeGuin meant for that to be a bridge between the Quartet and the newer final novel. But The Finder is also super interesting as it gives you the origin of the magic school on Roke Island. 6y

Sad news 😿i'm glad i've just read the first three earthsea novels and gotten to know her. i'd known about her work, but when i finally got round to it i realized just HOW MUCH influence she had on all my favorite works of fantasy and scifi! What a legend!

LeeRHarry I'm happy we are reading Left Hand of Darkness for my book group later in the year - I think it's a lovely way to remember her. 7y

Wow. If you want to read a shallow book that shoves a “truth/morale” down your throat, do not read this book. If you are looking for collection of stories around the Earthsea world that range from charming tales of love to shudderingly creepy controlling/power hungry humans to the purity of an innocent‘s rage when confronted with evil, read this book.

#LyricalApril Day 6: #Sail - now isn't that book cover just perfect for today's meme? While I know of Ursula LeGuin's brilliance, I have yet to read one of her novels. Hopefully, soon!

RealLifeReading The earthsea series is one of my all time favourites 8y
GatheringBooks @RealLifeReading I think I have review copies of all the books, but haven't found the time to really lose myself in the series yet. I know the books will find me at the right time. Hehe. 8y
