Excalibur: A Novel of Arthur | Bernard Cornwell
6 posts | 15 read | 15 to read
In The Winter King and Enemy of God Bernard Cornwell demonstrated his astonishing ability to make the oft-told legend of King Arthur fresh and new for our time. Now, in this riveting final volume of The Warlord Chronicles, Cornwell tells the unforgettable tale of Arthur's final struggles against the Saxons and his last attempts to triumph over a ruined marriage and ravaged dreams. This is the tale not only of a broken love remade, but also of forces both earthly and unearthly that threaten everything Arthur stands for. Peopled by princesses and bards, by warriors and magicians, Excalibur is the story of love, war, loyalty, and betrayal-the work of a magnificent storyteller at the height of his powers.

Cornwell brings his Arthurian trilogy to a triumphant conclusion, with some of the best-written battle scenes I've ever read. Unlike a lot of historical/fantasy writers Cornwell is also great at creating female characters, Guinevere and Derfel's beloved Ceinwyn chief among them. Unmissable.

Great end to a great trilogy. Cornwell's Saxon Tales are still my fave, but this (Warlord Chronicles) is a good take on the Arthurian legend.

Bernard Cornwell has very strong female characters in his books, this one is no exception. Excalibur is a story of King Arthur, this is part 3 of a trilogy. I love this author and look forward to his next installment of Uhtred of Bebbanburg my favourite fictional character💗
