Three friends go looking for treasure and find horror in Jeffrey Ford's The Twilight Pariah. All Maggie, Russell, and Henry wanted out of their last college vacation was to get drunk and play archaeologist in an old house in the woods outside of town. When they excavate the mansion's outhouse they find way more than they bargained for: a sealed bottle filled with a red liquid, along with the bizarre skeleton of a horned child Disturbing the skeleton throws each of their lives into a living hell. They feel followed wherever they go, their homes are ransacked by unknown intruders, and people they care about are brutally, horribly dismembered. The three friends awakened something, a creature that will stop at nothing to retrieve its child. Great concept, disappointing execution. A trio of bored pot-smoking college kids (including an archeology major) find a very unusual skeleton while illegally excavating part of an old, abandoned manor property. The setup is creepy and fun, but the plot feels undercooked. I wanted grand horror, but the result was pulpy, lacking in any real emotion, glib, and reminiscent of forgettable mid-2000s scary movies with poor cgi.

This is not my usual genre and I thought it would be way scarier than it is. The initial chapters were, but it kind of lost it‘s zing at the end. I did enjoy this weird story, though. Mix 3 college students with a skeleton and a disembodied spirit and there will be big trouble. Spooky cover. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

⭐I did not care for this book at all. There's 🚬 every few pages and totally unnecessary to know how they let out their cigarettes. I didn't care about any of the characters and the narrator just seemed wrong. It actually had an ok ending though. But 90% of the book was not enjoyable. Good thing this was short, I was able to push through the read.

Just ⭐️⭐️ for this creature feature / haunted house novella. It was scarier at the start than the end, which is backwards. And the ending was just meh. I was hoping for a twist, but instead the logical conclusion just came via plodding action and not much else. On the upside, another short book done and off my shelf!

Book and bowl of açaí etc. for lunch today. This new shop near my office was hopping and the bowl was delish. Plus, it‘s easier to read a horror book with full sunlight and plenty of people around. Naaah, it‘s not really that scary! #bookandlunch #horrorbook #acaibowl #healthylunch #plantbased

I don‘t usually read horror—which I think this is, even though it wasn‘t actually scary. But it is as very different than my usual fare, it was short, it was quick, and yay for archives! #horror

Next up for modern fiction. I know nothing about this, I grabbed it off the “new fiction” display at the library.

You know I didn't leave the library empty handed. I was limited by what I was willing to carry, in hand, 1.5 miles. Which is not a bad thing, because I don't have time for these!! #toomanybookstoolittletime

This was a fun, short read. This is a fairly classic horror tale in a modern setting. Good humor elements. Ended rather abruptly, but that's ok.

Book 3 for the #readathon done! I lost a few hours due to plans with my family but now I‘m back with it. I‘m a little sleepy, but I think I‘m going to forego a nap and push through instead. Planning on brewing some coffee in a bit.

This was another great novella from Tor! I‘m definitely going to pick up more of Ford‘s writing. I think he has a short story in the Haunted Nights anthology I‘ve been reading. Ok...on to the next one! Wraith reread!

TheBookAddict Is Wraith the same book as NOS4A2? 7y
BekahB @TheBookAddict it‘s a tie-in to NOS4A2. It‘s a comic about Charlie Manx‘s origin story. It‘s creepy and great! 7y
TheBookAddict awesome! I‘ve read NOS4A2 but I didn‘t know about Wraith. I will have to get it soon! Maybe I‘ll ask 🎅🏽 to get it for me...lol. Perfect, don‘t you think? 7y
BekahB @TheBookAddict HA! Definitely! 😄 7y

Going with a so-so for two reasons 1. Got this from PageHabit, so the notes were fun, but $30 for a $15 book, c‘mon. This is not the book‘s fault. 2. It is super short. It is 167 pages, but large type pages. It moves, it is creepy, but it takes 40 pages to find the object and the pace doesn‘t pick up until 85 pages in. Just something off for me. One night read, which was good.

NerdyRev I complained on Twitter to Page Habit and they apologized for the novellas back to back. 7y

First time receiving a #mypagehabit box and I'm psyched about the book choice and other little treats I found within. I'm not sure I'll use this particular subscription service again, but it was definitely fun to get such a variety of surprises in the mail! What are your favorite bookish subscription services?

Some stoned/drunk college kids find a horned baby skeleton and try to figure out what's the dealio. Okay. Without ligaments a skeleton is just a bunch of loose bones. Ignore that and it's still a thin story with some funny moments. The best part of the book is a long excerpt from a fictional book called "The Demon Mind". THAT'S the book I want to read. #LittensDressedInBlood

MidnightBookGirl Haha, I felt the same way when I read Misery- I loved the gothic romance excerpts King peppered throughout the book, and even thought that they must be real (I was in high school). 7y

Reading the book from #mypagehabit (horror version) and these author annotations are driving me nuts. The sticky notes have page numbers on them and they're all several pages too early, which ruins the reading flow and some of the fun stuff that Ford's put in the book.

valeriegeary That sounds annoying 7y
LauraJ @valeriegeary Not as annoying as knowing I paid $38 when I could buy the ebook without the distracting notes for $3.99. 7y

Well, I have to say it. I unboxed my Horror subscription today, and promptly cancelled it. This is the second month that I've paid $29.99 for a paperback book, plus goodies that mostly duplicate the other box I get. I do love the pen and notepad. But the two paperbacks were both list price $15 or less. This month's is a NOVELLA and the ebook is $3.99. It must be harder to get horror authors to annotate their books. Disappointed.

BarbaraTheBibliophage I will say that they now allow you to add book-only options to an existing subscription. At least that way I won't be getting doubles of all the extras. I'd recommend that for the horror box. However, I do like the choices I've received for Historical Fiction. 7y
BriKie That is frustrating! Overall, I like my lit-fic PH and thankfully, only hardbacks so far. I also would like to see the items be curated at least somewhat for the different genres instead of generically duplicating them. There‘s little motivation to sub to more than one box, otherwise. 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @BriKie I like all the genres to choose from, but I'm starting to tire of the "goodies." I think some curation and understanding the audience would be warranted. I saw another Litten unsubscribe very quickly b/c she thought the goodies were childish. I hope they publicize that you can get a book-only add-on now too. 7y

Merethebookgal Aw, that's too bad 🙁 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Merethebookgal I gave it three months. Disappointed two out of three. 😰😰 7y
Merethebookgal @BarbaraTheBibliophage Well, you can't say you didn't give it a chance! 7y
ptkpepe98 I am getting the mysteries, and am happy so far. It's only been two months, though.🤗 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @ptkpepe98 I've been very happy with their Historical Fiction book choices, so I'll keep that one. They also added an option to include an annotated book (without goodies) with an existing box subscription. I may do that some months. 7y
LauraJ I cancelled too. Very disappointed. With tax and shipping, it‘s not even close to being worth $38. For the last box, I received two books I had read months ago. Being a horror fan is hard when you‘re over 30. 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @LauraJ I‘m glad I‘m not alone. Although it bums me out ... 7y
ReadingGrrl I get the mystery box - 2 months I got books I had just finished - that was a bummer but seeing that they were new and I had received arcs I can‘t complains but the bling is lacking I‘m gonna give it another month or 2 before I cancel - hope they step it up 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @ReadingGrrl That is the danger of ARCs with subscriptions, for sure. I wish PH had an option of just ordering the book. 7y
Cinfhen I'm sorry your #PageHabit was disappointing😥I think you made some valid criticism and hopefully they listen to your feedback! I've been wavering about this service for awhile! I still haven't read the book you gifted me through @Pagehabit but I'm really looking forward to reading it 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen I've really liked the Historical Fiction books I've received. And now you can add a second book without getting a whole second box (and duplicate goodies). I just hope they upscale their goodies soon. And I do hope you enjoy The Underground River when you get to it. 7y
