Sulfur Springs: A Novel | William Kent Krueger

In William Kent Kruegers latest pulse-pounding thriller, Cork OConnors search for a missing man in the Arizona desert puts him at the center of a violent power struggle along the Mexican border, a struggle that might cost Cork everything and everyone he holds most dear. On the Fourth of July, just as fireworks are about to go off in Aurora, Minnesota, Cork OConnor and his new bride Rainy Bisonette listen to a desperate voicemail left by Rainy's son, Peter. The message is garbled and full of static, but they hear Peter confess to the murder of someone named Rodriguez. When they try to contact him, they discover that his phone has gone dead. The following morning, Cork and Rainy fly to Coronado County in southern Arizona, where Peter has been working as a counselor in a well-known drug rehab center. When they arrive, they learn that Peter was fired six months earlier and hasnt been heard from since. So they head to the little desert town of Sulfur Springs where Peter has been receiving his mail. But no one in Sulfur Springs seems to know him. They do, however, recognize the name Rodriguez. Carlos Rodriguez is the head of a cartel that controls everything illegal crossing the border from Mexico into Coronado County. As they gather scraps of information about Peter, Cork and Rainy are warned that there is a war going on along the border. Trust no one in Coronado County, is a refrain they hear again and again. And to Cork, Arizona is alien country. The relentless heat and absence of water, tall trees, and cool forests feel nightmarish to him, as does his growing sense that Rainy might know more about what's going on than she's willing to admit. And if he can't trust Rainy, who can he trust? Featuring Kruegers signature talent of creating strong characters, building drama and conflict, braiding in Indian legend and spirituality, and spinning a good yarn (Minneapolis Star Tribune), Sulfur Springs is a fresh, exhilarating, and white-knuckle mystery starring one of the greatest heroes of fiction.

While I mostly liked this book, it did get a little repetitive. There was also one instance where Cork didn‘t act quite right given the situation. I found it difficult to believe that neither the sheriff nor Cork‘s enemies noticed it. It could have changed the course of the events if they had. #audiowalk

It was so pretty outside today but still a little chilly. I didn‘t walk as far as I did yesterday so I didn‘t get as far in the book. It‘s weird to read one where Cork‘s kids barely show up. #audiowalk

It‘s been awhile since I‘ve listened to a Cork O‘Connor novel, so this next in the series for me is my new #audiowalk book. I did a lot of walking and driving today, so I‘m almost halfway through already. It‘s nice to be back in Cork‘s world even though we‘re in Arizona for this one instead of Minnesota.

#16 in the Cork O‘Connor series finds Cork and Rainey at the southern US border trying to rescue Rainey‘s son from previous partner. This was a unique chapter of the Cork saga, and I missed the Canada and Northern Minnesota mystique.

Another great book; this was written from a 1st-person perspective by the protagonist so it had a different feel from other books. A solid 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for this one.

I somehow missed this book in the series and remedied that today. I recently saw Kent at a talk for his newest book and he talked a bit about this one, too. Lots of great quotes but this one will stick with me a long time.: “when you act out of fear, you risk becoming exactly the kind of monster you‘re trying to bar the door against.”

CaitlinR I loved this book. Great review. 6y

The opposite of love is always fear. I know that to be true. Where I fall short is remembering to imagine the best of what might be. I tend to lean more toward catastrophizing. 😀❤️

AlaMich “Catastrophizing.” Yes. One of my favorite CBT thought distortions!! 😊 7y
Suet624 @AlaMich trying to have faith that good possibilities can actually occur is a lifelong project. I‘m getting closer but not quite there yet. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 7y

Mehso-so

I only knew Krueger from reading Ordinary Grace which I liked a lot. Didn‘t know he had a very long series of mysteries starring Cork O‘Connor (say that 5 Times fast!). I appreciate that Krueger dealt with the issue of the border wall and the myriad number of issues associated with that. Apparently he‘s taken flak for it. However, I wasn‘t as impressed with the telling of the story. If you‘re already a fan of the series chances are you‘d like it.

Reggie In the movie Donnie Darko, one of the teachers says Cellar Door is the most lovely sounding and easy to say combination of words in the English language. When I was waiting tables I found Arnold Palmer a combination that takes a lot of work. 7y
Suet624 @Reggie 😂😂😂 ohhh, and I like the sound of cellar door! 7y
Bklover Cellar door. Cellar door. I agree!! @Reggie 7y

I always recommend reading William Kent Krueger for a true picture of life in the US Midwest. Now, retired cop Cork O'Connor heads to Arizona to find his missing step-son, and Krueger's story-telling strikes me as just as authentic & complex at the southern border. #MeaningfulQuote #NewYearReads

I have only read a few of William Kent Krueger's Cork O'Connor mysteries so I cannot judge how this compares to the others in this series, but I enjoyed the fast moving story of this particular one. I thought this novel captures very well the feel of place. It explores the conflicting opinions of those living along the United States/Mexican Border and real life choices they are asked to make.

A fantastic addition and a 5 Star for me. Kent‘s had a lot of flack and some who have refused to read his books again after this just because he dared to discuss immigration in a mystery! Full review in my blog http://scrappymags.com/2017/10/28/book-review-sulfer-springs-by-william-kent-kru...

SilversReviews I love his books. Saw him in person talking about this book. Awesome person. 7y
ScrappyMags @SilversReviews so jealous.. he‘s never anywhere near SC! I️ love his Native American angle, land description, all in a mystery. He‘s so nice too - 7y

Excellent addition to the series. Cork O'Connor and his wife are drawn to southern Arizona when her son is in trouble. Seeing the southwest through their eyes was powerful and I appreciated the way Krueger handled contemporary issues such as immigration and drug smuggling. Krueger us an outstanding writer.
