I knew from the premise that I'd like this story, but I truly fell in love with the characters and Von Arnim's writing! Very British, and so humorous! She reminds me a bit of a female P. G. Woodhouse. Jennifer is such a strong, inspiring main character, and I also loved her romantic interest. Tons of character growth, tension, and cozy British settings.

Jennifer promised her dying mother that she‘d never leave her father and has spent twelve years as his unpaid secretary and housekeeper. When her father suddenly shows up one day at tea time with a new wife (who‘s younger than Jennifer), she decides she must grab this opportunity to make a life of her own.

I‘m loving this 1931 #SpinsterLit novel (and von Arnim is rapidly becoming one of my new favourite authors)!

Today‘s #bookmail. I have been wanting to start buying titles from The British Library Women Writers series since I first saw them and I finally decided to treat myself to a couple. Of course I had to buy these two together.

I love Elizabeth, and so I was delighted to find a 1st ed. of a book of hers I hadn't read at a thrift shop.I didn't realize at the time just how lucky I was to find it, as it's been out of print for years and isn't available online, which is a shame as I think it's one of her very best. When Jen's widowed father suddenly remarries, she takes the opportunity to escape to a country cottage, where she meets a shy clergyman and his domineering sister.

lydiabbc Also, it has shades of an absolute top favorite of mine, #TheBlueCastle by #L.M.Montgomery. #ElizabethvonArnim #vintage 7y
