Expand Your Horizons 2021: Read a Book Published in the 1920s

This volume contained 12 short stories that had me looking up words lost in my current vocabulary, retelling shenanigans to those around me who would listen, and roaring with laugher when reading by myself. Goodness, William is like the perfect mix of Leave It To Beaver × Dennis The Menace × Amelia Bedelia filled with the best of intentions but not outrunning his misgivings.

SRWCF Artwork like this is my all-time favorite! 3y
CarolynM My father still has a copy of this and some of the other Just William books from his childhood. I read and loved them when I was a child too. I still quote my favourite one every now and then 3y

#7days7books day 4
Today i wanted to think back to the books in my childhood that made me a reader and this series was at the forefront of my mind with a funny irreverent boy who regularly pierces adult pomposity.
After listening to a recent episode of radio 4's great lives i want to reread them and as ever bemoan the disappearance of all my early books.

Centique I love the way you describe it - piercing adult pomposity - that‘s perfect! 5y

People with children, teachers, librarians, anyone really...
I‘m in need of recommendations for a 7 year old boy who isn‘t enjoying reading. I know we just haven‘t found the right book for him, something that will hold his attention. Something he can read on his own or I can read to him, either is appreciated.

Jess_Read_This Have you tried any of the Star Wars Books- Jedi Academy? My friend‘s son is 7 and enjoys these books. 7y
umbrellagirl I have not but he has enjoyed some SW films. I will look for these. Thank you @Jess_Read_This 7y
Jess_Read_This @umbrellagirl I hope he likes it! I know her son also went through A Diary of a Wimpy Kid and a Captain Underpants phase as well... lol! 7y

Tamra Bad Kitty books! Also, the Dragon Masters series. 7y
cobwebmoth My son didn't enjoy very much reading until he got the first Dog Man book from Dav Pilkey. 7y
mcipher Nate the Great is super fun. Maybe a tie-in with something he likes, like a toy or a TV show? 7y
umbrellagirl Thanks @Tamra @cobwebmoth @mcipher I will look for those as well 7y
Tamra If you want to read together, Frannie K. Stein series has been fun! 7y
Centique My son was won over with The 13 Storey Treehouse Series. They‘re Australian so might be harder to find in US or UK but so worth it. They‘re really really funny and the boys are always adding crazy things onto the treehouse 7y
Centique Also you could try non fiction like Guinness Book of Records or some of the DK books? My son pores over these looking for crazy facts. It all helps! 7y
umbrellagirl Thank you @AmandaL & @Centique now I just need to begin another TBR list for W 7y
Libby1 My son is 7 and he loves the Mr Men and Little Miss books. 😃 7y
umbrellagirl I love those too! @Libby1 7y
readinginthedark I was going to suggest nonfiction, too! I‘ve known kids who didn‘t want to read a story but who were curious to learn more about their interests—space, construction, jellyfish, etc. 7y
MarriedtoMrT My 6yo daughter has just become obsessed with Dogman so I second @cobwebmoth 7y
Caroline2 My son loves the 'I want my hat back' series, they really make him laugh! (edited) 7y
MariettaSG Toby Alone by Timothee de Fombelle - you will probably have to read it to him. He could probably read the 13 Storey Treehouse set or Don't Look Now set by Andy Griffiths. 7y
