Rubbernecker | Belinda Bauer
Breathtaking. I read this and wished Id written it.Val McDermid Belinda Bauer is a phenomenal voice in British crime fiction, whose work has won the CWAs Gold Dagger Award for Crime Novel of the Year and garnered rave reviews on both sides of the Atlantic. Winner of the 2014 Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award, Rubbernecker is a gripping thriller about a medical student who begins to suspect that something strange is going on in this cadaver lab. The dead cant speak to us, Professor Madoc had said. But that was a lie. The body Patrick Fort is examining in anatomy class is trying to tell him all kinds of things. But no one hears what he does, and no one understand when he tries to tell them. Life is already strange enough for Patrickbeing a medical student with Aspergers Syndrome doesn't come without its challenges. And thats before he is faced with solving a possible murder, especially when no one believes a crime has even taken place. Now he must stay out of danger long enough to unravel the mystery. But as Patrick learns one truth from a dead man, he discovers there have been many other lies closer to home. A cant-put-it-down page-turner from one of the finest voices in UK crime, Rubbernecker puts Belinda Bauer firmly on the map of world-class crime writers. An intelligent, disturbing read. The Guardian (UK)

Well written, original mystery. But I found myself uneasy with how the autistic MC was portrayed, it was a bit narrow. I wanted to see how autistic ppl viewed it and the below review confirmed my unease. So read for the mystery, with the understanding that this is a limited view of autism. Pick with a caveat.

Not been on Litsy much this week, life!!
Thank you to all the #whodunituk crowd for a great time reading everyone‘s picks. I loved reading all your comments, you were all much better at making notes than I was! Special thank you to @jenniferw88 for spoiling me & my little one again! Chocolate not pictured as it didn‘t last long!
Also thank you to @ScorpioBookDreams for organising. I said I‘d forward this book on to someone, can‘t remember who....

LoveToReadLiveToRead @Libby1 was it you I said I‘d forward this to? Happy to do so if you still wanted to pass it on....was it to your mum? 5y
Libby1 Hello! I‘m so sorry I never replied. Yes, it would be lovely if you wish to pass this on to me but it‘s not a problem if I‘m too late. Life has been very hectic lately and I‘ve hardly been on Litsy. I miss it! I hope you‘re well. ❤️ 5y
LoveToReadLiveToRead @Libby1 no problem! I‘ve found your email address from the #whodunituk email chains so have sent you an email x 5y

Last #whodunituk completed! I guessed the cause of death but not the criminal. I also liked Patrick, although he did remind me of Anne Hegerty at times!

Thanks @LoveToReadLiveToRead for choosing this book - 3 🌟

I really enjoyed this! A good old fashioned psychological thriller/murder mystery. The main character is autistic and it‘s fascinating to see the world through his eyes as he uncovers these mysteries. #whodunituk

A thriller with a main character with #Aspergers ?

I recently posted about my bugbear with “Magical Disabled People” in books. This could have been so bad, but it wasn‘t.

Either Bauer knows someone with #Autism or has done her research because this was spot on.

I really liked the story and the writing and will read more from this author. Thank you, @Christine11 , for choosing this book for #whodunituk !

TrishB I love this author ❤️ glad it felt authentic. 6y

merelybookish Tagged book is an example of 'magical disability'. It made me SO mad!! 6y
LoveToReadLiveToRead This was my pick for #whodunituk, I heard a review of it on Simon Mayo‘s Radio 2 bookclub aaaages ago and finally read it last year so when I joined #whodunituk it seems perfect! Glad you enjoyed it x 6y
Libby1 @TrishB , @CouronneDhiver @merelybookish - The Keeper of Lost Things made me mad for the same reason! @LoveToReadLiveToRead - thanks so much for picking this book. It was a 5⭐️ read for me, and I remember it fondly. I‘m thinking of buying a copy for my mother in law as she likes thrillers and it might give her some insights into my son. She‘s great with him, but I‘m so immersed in autism stuff and I think it might help her. 6y
LoveToReadLiveToRead @Libby1 if your MIL doesn‘t mind used copies I can send you that one back when we‘re done if you like? I‘m happy for it to go to a good home! 6y
Libby1 @LoveToRead - Hello! Sorry for the delayed reply. You‘re so very kind. I‘d love the book when it‘s done the rounds. Thanks so much 😊 6y
jenniferw88 @LoveToReadLiveToRead Ruth, I'm not sure if you've seen Libby's comment, so thought I'd make you aware. I hope to send by the end of this week/early next. 5y
Libby1 @jenniferw88 - hello. I hope you‘re well. I haven‘t had a book sent to me for quite a while. I must follow this up. 5y
jenniferw88 @Libby1 hi, I'm fine thanks. If Ruth is sending to you, I've still got Ruth's book (I've been putting it off, I'm afraid) but other than that I don't know what to suggest. 5y
LoveToReadLiveToRead @Libby1 sorry, I totally missed this! Thanks @jenniferw88 5y
LoveToReadLiveToRead @Libby1 yes, I‘ll forward it onto you when I get it back. No rush @jenniferw88 @Christine11 I‘m only about a third through After The Fall, I‘m hoping to make a dent in it his weekend but is it okay if I‘m a little late? This must be your pick is it? X 5y

My second Belinda Bauer and I really enjoyed it! You‘re right, @trishb she writes vulnerable characters that win your heart; about human conditions, not just a mystery or crime. This one will have you staying up late to devour it..good story, well plotted, and fans of The Curious Incident of the Dog In the Nighttime will enjoy. Some detailed anatomical descriptions may make you squeamish but it‘s not violent.

@Cathythoughts have you read this?

Cathythoughts I havnt read this one , but I do love her & her other books I ve read. Feeling a bit fluey 🙁today, so will be spending the day on the couch with my book ... I‘ll finish present read & then I just might move on to Rubbernecker ! Sounds really good 👍🏻♥️ 6y
TrishB So glad you liked it ❤️ there‘s always a bit more than a mystery. I love this author. @Cathythoughts hope you‘re feeling better soon 😘 6y

How is it anatomically possible to whistle through your bellybutton?

Highly enjoyable and unconventional crime story whose protagonist is a young man with severe Asperger's. Bauer succeeds brilliantly in getting us to empathize with someone who finds empathy hard. I also loved the portrayal of slutty, shallow nurse Tracey. Great fun.

I can't believe I waited until now to read this! Fast paced and SO well written, I devoured this book. Patrick has Asperger's and he's profoundly fascinated by death. Samuel Galen has been in a serious car accident and ends up in the neurological ward at the hospital unable to communicate. The two meet in the most unconventional way and so begins a wild thriller you won't be able to put down! #rubbernecker #belindabauer

Inevitably invites mention/comparison to Haddon‘s book; but this features an older hero, and it‘s more visceral and guignol in parts. Entertaining, fast paced, and every once in a while too convenient plotting-wait, what?-but sucks you in for the twist at the end. Excellent for holiday or train/plane fun read.

I struggled a bit with this book and almost put it down several times but I stayed with it and a little over half way it got better. The main character is Patrick Forte and he has Asperger's Syndrome. Patrick gets the opportunity to enroll in an anatomy class at Cardiff University, for the purpose of finding out why his father died. But Patrick gets sidetracked while working on dissecting a cadaver and things take a turn for Patrick.

Finished Rubbernecker by Belinda Bauer today. Bauer has become one of my favourite authors. I liked this one as well although far from her best. Pretty Raw and gory at times and the characters grew on me as the story went along.

A page-turning mystery. As good as the who-done-it story is the glimpse into the life of the protagonist, a clever medical student who has Asperger's syndrome.
