Wilhelmina Silver's world is golden. Living half-wild on an African farm with her horse, her monkey and her best friend, every day is beautiful. But when her home is sold and Will is sent away to boarding school in England, the world becomes impossibly difficult. For lions and hyenas are nothing compared to packs of schoolgirls.

I found this book as I was searching my library‘s page for this author‘s latest book, Impossible Creatures. I fell in love with the cover and knew nothing of what it was about.

Very different from Impossible Creatures. We follow Wilhelmina, Will, as she lives with her dad in a farm in Africa. A perfect life in her eyes. After her father‘s death, thing changes on the farm and she‘s sent to boarding school in England.

Will lives with her father on the plains of Africa. Everyday is an adventure. When her father dies, Will is sent away to a boarding school in England. It is nothing like Africa but packed with vicious school girls. Can Will survive this adventure?
The author has a beautiful writing style which makes African life sound so lovely and vibrant but life in England is full of sadness and despair. Will she ever truly find happiness?

My girl is 10 tomorrow. She just read Heidi by Johanna Spyri all by herself, which is more than I‘ve done, and is growing an impressive collection of niche graphic novels all by herself 💕. So proud of her. She‘s getting lots of books for her birthday but I‘m especially excited for this stack for us to read together. Historical fiction is now our thing after we binge-watched Pride and Prejudice and Downton Abbey over lockdown #raisingreaders

TrishB Very cool👍🏻 4y
Nute Happy Birthday to your darling girl! I love watching or hearing about a developing reader...the books that they gravitate to, the authors that they like...it‘s all very exciting! 🎊Have a special day tomorrow!🎊 4y
LeahBergen I‘ve recently bought The Austen Girls (for myself! 😆) and I bet she‘ll enjoy it! 4y
Cathythoughts That‘s so lovely ! Happy Birthday to your girl Jill 💕💕💕! (edited) 4y

I actually thoroughly enjoyed this book! An African girl is forced to leave her home and go to England, if I say any more I'll be spoiling the story 😂 this book actually made me tear up quite a few times, it's so beautifully written! I read it all in about 3 hours. I highly recommend this super short easy (but heart wrenching) book. 4/5⭐️

LauraBrook Oh no! The storm is just firing up at my house (Milwaukee) and a friend at the other end of the state said that it was crazy windy, lots of trees down, stuff tipped over, etc. Don't know how I'm supposed to sleep with this going on! And hope no one got hurt by that! 8y

There's so much to like about this book--the setting, the writing, the characters. But I feel the book lost a little momentum toward the middle. Some of the things that were happening seemed a little too strange so it lost me a bit. Still, I like the theme that you can't run away from your troubles, but you have to try to make the best of it!
