Can a gentle werewolf heal the heart of a smart-mouthed mage?NYT bestseller Gail Carriger, writing as G. L. Carriger, presents an offbeat gay romance in which a sexy werewolf with a white knight complex meets a bad boy mage with an attitude problem. Sparks (and other things) fly.Max fails everything - magic, relationships, life. So he works for DURPS (the DMV for supernatural creatures) as a sumage, cleaning up other mages' messes. The job sucks and he's in no mood to cope with redneck biker werewolves. Unfortunately, there's something oddly appealing about the huge, muscled Beta visiting his office for processing.Bryan AKA Biff (yeah, he knows) is gay but he's not out. There's a good chance Max might be reason enough to leave the closet, if he can only get the man to go on a date. Everyone knows werewolves hate mages, but Bryan is determined to prove everyone wrong, even the mage in question.Delicate Sensibilities? This story contains M/M sexitimes and horrible puns. If you get offended easily, then you probably will. The ----San Andreas Shifter stories contain blue language, dirty deeds, and outright admiration for the San Francisco Bay Area. Not for the faint of heart (mouth/tongue/etc.).This book stands alone, but there is a prequel short story featuring Bryan's brother, Alec, the Alpha. Want to know why the pack moved? Read Marine Biology.

4.5/5⭐ I adore idiots in love.

Carriger can always be relied on for a feel-good story. This one is full of ups and downs and a lot of heart. The magic is interesting, the romance is smoking hot, and the found family is off-the-charts comforting. Conversations between characters about the serious stuff are breathtakingly meaningful. It's a whole package of a book, and I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

We are never handed power! We have always had to fight for it, tooth and nail, fang and claw. How else do we make up for chronic disenfranchisement except to seize those rare gifts when they are offered?

We, the weird and the sideways folk, have always walked the line of rejection. It‘s what makes us visionaries. We who are pushed away, to the edge, can see beyond the borders of reality. We frighten the privileged with our possibilities.

You‘re not writing your own story, you‘re living with the disappointment of failing someone else‘s outline.

Like Max I needed a caffeine/sugar pick me up of Vanilla Latte to finish running errands. Rather than his usual 3 pumps of Vanilla syrup I just went for 1. 😉 #charactersandcoffee

Cranky, saucy, and sassy by turns Max is adorable (a term he would object to emphatically) and broken. If he hadn‘t already gotten therapy, predating this book, I don‘t think I could have believed how quickly he made so much emotional progress. But he did! So, his growth is beautiful. I love that his relationship with Bryan (such a big ol‘ cinnamon roll) addressed a lot of issues that make a love at first sight story less believable.
#RereadWorthy

CoffeeK8 I really love when romances use therapy as part of the process for building a healthy self and a healthy relationship 4y

This is up next in our road trip shenanigans. I tried all morning to convince Tara that we needed to stop to take pictures. We listened to sports news for a few hours so a book is a good change.

I was excited by the windmills and FINALLY got the pilot to stop our roadship (car).

Very sweet and really rather spicy, I really enjoyed this book! A nice quiet story about two people learning to love each other and accept themselves. 💝

I adored this. It‘s a lot of bodice-ripping (but more with boxers than bodices?) but fun, appealing, sweet characters. I loved the modernized idea of “Pack” for the San Francisco area.
Basically, this would be a fun book even without all the sexy bits.

Wow wow wow. I wasn‘t expecting to enjoy this so much. Ended up reading this in a single evening. The world building was a little confusing but I loved the characters and there was a lot of sexy times. Very good. Can‘t wait for more!

dsfisher I‘m fond of her other series so I‘ll have to go get this one. 7y
WeeWeegieBookworm The sequel is due out at the end of the year 👍🏻 7y
KeepCalmWithBooksAndCoffee @dsfisher I love all of her series. This one is adult though. So be ready for the sexy times. 👍 7y

Very different from Ms. Carriger's other work but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Once I got over that this wasn't the Parasolverse, I actually really enjoyed it. The sequel is due out later in the year and I'm looking forward to seeing where it is heading.

Fantastic m/m, #romantsy, paranormal story! This is a standalone (with a prequel short story - also a must read!) Biff is a beautiful soul and Max is snark on a stick! The rest of the pack and non-wolfie characters are adorable, gruff, and snappy by turns and I just love them all! Carriger mixes fun, seriousness, sass, and sexy times to create a great story in need of becoming a series!

#BlameitonLitsy I've read everything Gail Carriger has written. This one is a much more descriptive 👨‍❤️‍👨 romance.😉 Loved seeing Alec & Marvin from Marine Biology as a couple. Did have a bit of trouble following all the types of magical beings. I'm sure as she writes more in this world it will come to me. Didn't stop me from enjoying story. Loved message of 'you don't have be like your sorry excuse of a family.' #mymotherwouldnotapprove

josie281 I adore her as well. 7y
Johanna414 Her books are so much fun! I've read almost all of her full length novels and then I'll start reading some of her shorter fiction 7y

A new series from one of my favorite authors. Lots of sexy times. Some humor. Excellent world building (read Marine Biology first). Characters are well-defined and should develop more over the series. Carriger will do a lot of dot-to-dot over the series so if you're a reader who pays attention the payoff will be sweet. This series isn't explicitly linked to her other work but it could be - read it to find out how.

I enjoyed this so much. I would have read it in one sitting if I could, but pesky things like work & the need for sleep before work got in the way. This has the wit and snark of Carriger's other books, but oh boy is it hot. I blushed on the train at Biff & Max's shenanigans. This is much, much raunchier than her other books, & I think the decision to badge it differently was right. Well worth a look if you like m/m romance or any romance in fact.

MCYmermaid Picked it up at #SDCC2027, but have yet to read. 7y
Verity @MCYmermaid it's a lot raunchier than her other stuff, but I really enjoyed it. But maybe don't read it on the train! 7y

If you are familiar with Gail Carriger's #FinishingSchool, #ParasolProtectorate, and #CustardProtocol series you should know that this series is a new direction for her writing. If you've read Marine Biology then you know some of the key characters for this series. This is a paranormal romance with decidedly adult content. It's super funny and the writing excellent. I'm already in love with it and I'm only 25% done.

LibrarianRyan This is her LGBTQ series isn't it? 7y
jpmcwisemorgan @LibrarianRyan Yes, it is. Marine Biology was the prequel to it. She also has one other novella linked to the Parasol Protectorate series, and at least one more planned, that are/will be LGBTQ. 7y
LibrarianRyan @jpmcwisemorgan that's what I was thinking. I had read she was working on some. 7y

The only advantage to getting up at 3.50am to go to work was that Gail Carriger's new book had arrived on my kindle and I could start reading it on the train in. So exciting.
