"Robert McCloskey's unusual and stunning pictures have long been a delight for their fun as well as their spirit of place."The Horn Book Mrs. Mallard was sure that the pond in the Boston Public Gardens would be a perfect place for her and her eight ducklings to live. The problem was how to get them there through the busy streets of Boston. But with a little help from the Boston police, Mrs. Mallard and Jack, Kack, Lack, Nack, Ouack, Pack, and Quack arive safely at their new home. This brilliantly illustrated, amusingly observed tale of Mallards on the move has won the hearts of generations of readers. Awarded the Caldecott Medal for the most distinguished American picture book for children in 1941, it has since become a favorite of millions. This classic tale of the famous Mallard ducks of Boston is available for the first time in a full-sized paperback edition. Make Way for Ducklings has been described as "one of the merriest picture books ever" (The New York Times). Ideal for reading aloud, this book deserves a place of honor on every child's bookshelf. "This delightful picture book captures the humor and beauty of one special duckling family. ... McClosky's illustrations are brilliant and filled with humor. The details of the ducklings, along with the popular sights of Boston, come across wonderfully. The image of the entire family proudly walking in line is a classic."The Barnes & Noble Review "The quaint story of the mallard family's search for the perfect place to hatch ducklings. ... For more than fifty years kids have been entertained by this warm and wonderful story."Children's Literature

This is another book that my parents used to read to me when I was little and I always loved it. It reminded us of them because they used to live in Boston before I was around. It is such a sweet book and it makes people think about what animals in cities may be going through. There is nothing wrong with throwing bread to the ducks sometimes.

My working mom of 3 made time to read us classic picture books like this one, “The Snowy Day” and “Corduroy.” She didn‘t have much time to read herself, but she made sure to read to us. #picturebooks #kidlit

#ThoughtfulThursday

1. My favorite part of spring are the days when you don‘t need the heat or the AC on because the weather is just right. We don‘t get enough of those days in N.C.

2. Not so much in spring. I read a little of everything all year!

The tagged book is what came to mind. I guess baby animals seem like spring.

In the future, I would use this story of the mother and father duck searching for a safe home as a lesson to students of perseverance and the importance of making the best decisions for those you care about. Also, I feel that this book could simultaneously teach children about the importance of being respectful to others around you, including animal friends.

DrSpalding I agree this could make an excellent storytelling and of course read aloud works well with picture books. I have been to the Boston Garden where the story originates. They have gold statues of the ducks! https://images.app.goo.gl/MmmnWM2svUarQZsA9 5y

This book is awesome on many levels. It explores Boston, it makes you long for a world where the biggest concern for policemen is escorting a family of ducks to the park... The illustrations are fantastic and I exclaimed more than once, to my 10-year-old‘s annoyance, “”LOOK AT THEIR LITTLE DUCK BUTTS!” 😂🤷🏻‍♀️😂 10/1,001 #1001ChildrensBooks

Caldecott and was written in 1941 and renewed 1969. This setting of this book is mr. and mrs. Mallard flying all over the place trying to find a place to raise their young. After they found public garden they really enjoyed it for the people and the food that they gave them. However mrs. Mallard knew it wasnt safe enough so they found another to raise the young. The ducklings hatched and their mother took them back to public garden.

I loved the use of one color throughout the books drawings. The sepia tone was accented very well by the forest green color the outside of the book was. It gave it a very elegant and classic style that I am a huge fan of.
