House of Shadows
House of Shadows | Nicola Cornick
The wooded hills of Oxfordshire conceal the remains of the aptly named Ashdown House--a wasted pile of cinders and regret. Once home to the daughter of a king, Ashdown and its secrets will unite three women across four centuries in a tangle of romance, deceit and destiny... 1662 A queen Bound by sex and birth to live for everyone but herself--and to love always in secret--Elizabeth Stuart entrusts a pair of arcane artifacts to her faithful cavalier to keep safe for her rightful heir. But fate will not be generous to the Winter Queen, throwing the question of succession into turmoil, the aftermath of which will resonate through the generations. 1801 A courtesan Lavinia Flyte wanted more from life than to be cruel Lord Evershot's doxy. He has brought her to Ashdown, the home of his ancestors, for reasons he guards greedily. But the maids' whispers of hidden treasures--a pearl with the power to foretell the future--consume her with a curiosity she confides only to her diary, unaware of a gathering menace. And the mystery that binds them all With her brother missing at Ashdown Park, Holly Ansell is inexplicably drawn to the clues contained in the journal he'd found of a Regency courtesan who was living at the historic home when it burned to the ground two hundred years ago. Holly is lured by the tragedy at Ashdown, and her search will soon reveal the truth about Lavinia and compel her to confront the stunning revelation about the legacy of the Winter Queen.

@DarkMina
Thank you Joey for gifting me this book. The first I've read from this author. The book weaves storylines through 3 eras. Holly is called to Ashdown because her brother has gone missing. A tale is woven linking a mirror and a pearl used by the Order of the Rosy Cross to see the future. Holly searches for her brother while she uncovers the events of the past that seem to be connected.

This one got off to a bit of a slow start for me. It took awhile for the three stories to tie together but I love time-slip novels and I find sometimes they require a bit of patience. I loved the medieval part of the story the best. I was captivated by Elizabeth and Craven‘s story. The style reminded me a bit of Susanna Kearsley. And the narrators did an excellent job! ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Andrew65 I enjoyed this one. 5y
KarynGood @Andrew65 I did too. I had known nothing about the Winter Queen. 5y

Three timelines (17th century, 19th century, and modern day) interweave to tell the story of powerful gifts given to Elizabeth Stuart the Winter Queen. Based on real historical figures, I found myself spending lots of time looking up information about the real people. The book was slow in parts but kept enough of my attention to keep going. Fans of historical fiction will enjoy this book.

I‘ve been listening to this one for awhile, probably because I only listen to audiobooks in the car. Anyway, I‘m enjoying it. I like the narrator but partial to the historical part of the story rather than the contemporary part.

Had a first today.... was reading outside for an hour and it was so hot that it melted the spine glue on my book. Didn't know that could happen. Looks like I will have to perform first aid on my poor book.

Whelp, the air conditioner broke and its 110 degrees outside and 92 in my house and climbing. Off to the hotel for the night and some cooler temps. Hopefully it gets fixed in the morning. At least I have a new book to read thanks to @MoonWitch94

MoonWitch94 Ugh that‘s horrible temperature! I‘ve been there with a broken air conditioning in dead of summer 👎🏻 Enjoy that book & please keep me updated with how you like it! ♥️📚 5y

1662 Oxfordshire - Winter Queen, Elizabeth Stuart, magic powers from mirror and a Pearl. Her secrets unite 3 women across 4 centuries. Lots of intrigue, deceit, destiny and romance. In the present day, Holly Ansell is looking for her missing brother, Ben. Ashdown House has been handed down and has hidden treasure. I need to read more by #NicoleCornick as I have enjoyed this book. Recommended to those who love historical romance.

Well what a wonderful read that was! Three timelines run through this book, modern day, Regency, and Stuart. The main historical protagonist being Elizabeth of Bohemia (Charles I‘s sister). If this isn‘t enough to whet your appetite we have a set of historical memoirs to read through, a curse and cursed artefacts finding their way through time. All the ingredients of a truly cracking and addictive read, in the style of Barbara Erskine! Recommended

Andrew65 Ran out of characters but I strongly recommend this book and can‘t wait to try other books by this author. (edited) 6y

Andrew65 @EadieB Don‘t know about slow motion, rather like backward motion! Two weeks to recharge my body and focus on reading! 👍 6y
Tove_Reads @Andrew65 @EadieB yay, to get back to reading a proper amount every day! Can we read Heresy soon? I have it for another couple of weeks. Which Follett should we read next? 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I‘m happy to read Heresy whenever you two are. 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Re Ken Follett we seem to be reading his thrillers backwards in order : Whiteout - 2004, Hornet Flight - 2002, Code to Zero - 2000, but we seemed to have missed out Jackdaws (2001), should we read that next. 6y

Definitely a fun and interesting read. I do wish that the reviews hadn't compared this to Kate Morton, as it really wasn't as epic as her work. That said, I enjoyed the three timelines, the characters were well rounded, and the story was interesting. I felt like it could have been more intense and have more Kate Morton vibes, but still worth reading!

A fun, escapist, light Victoria Holt read-alike that was the perfect antidote to all of the dark titles that I have been reading lately. This story was told via storylines from the past and present time. It was a combination of historical fiction, mystery, and romance, with a dash of paranormal elements. My only real pet peeve was the use of the word "whilst" a few too many times for my taste (petty, I know. But it bugged me).

#TBRtemptation post 3! London, 1662: the Winter Queen's weak words spoke of a dangerous mirror. Present day: Holly searches for her brother, Ben, who has disappeared while researching their family tree. She finds a 19th-Century diary by a Lavinia and an ornate mirror. The 3 women's lives will powerfully cross at Ashdown House. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Another NetGalley awaits. This is right down my alley. It has fantasy and history and is a bit of a time slip from what I hear. The novel I'm writing begins in 1640 England and involves time travel and reincarnation. ❤️ Someone give me more hours in the day!

It seems I‘ve been reading a lot of multi-century, historical-mystery-romances lately. Some are good, some are not so good. House of Shadows, fortunately, is one of the good ones. The author moves seamlessly between the 17th and 21st centuries, and paces the chapters and action well. Full review at https://itsallaboutthebook.org/2017/08/06/house-of-shadows-by-nicola-cornick/
