Tortilla Flat (Bound for Schools & Libraries)
Tortilla Flat (Bound for Schools & Libraries) | John Steinbeck
When Danny returns to Tortilla Flat in Monterey, California, after the First World War he moves into a small house left to him by his grandfather. One by one, various ne'er-do-wells are drawn to Danny's house - lured in part by the appeal of a rook over their heads, in part by Danny's generosity and the camaraderie that springs up around him.Deftubg all social conventions and expectations, Steinbeck's gallery of knights thrive on the love- and the fights -0 that inevitabley accompany a glorious night of drinking wine. They suffer the temptations of greed and lust, stand firm in their loyalty to one another, and, finally, come to understand the power of goodness and courage.

This is so unlike Of Mice and Men and East of Eden that I‘ve read. But it‘s quite a comical story of camaraderie among the sympathetic characters living a simple life. And plenty of wine drinking. I like the descriptive titles and straightforward storytelling.

A group of deadbeat friends while away the time, drinking cheap stolen wine, getting by by stealing what they need. But friendship kindles kindness, charity (even if stolen), and even a day of honest work when friendship requires it. The humor is not obvious until near the end but it‘s thruout in small doses. Not great but a good book. I‘ll definitely read more Steinbeck now that I‘ve been introduced to him thanks to #authoramonth @Soubhiville

mandarchy I think this was his first book and imy favorite. I love everything by Steinbeck, except The Pony, that book was a little too tragic for me. I went through a phase where I read everything by him, he is a master at bringing the reader into his place/space. It may be harder to relate as we move away from his era, but I am reading Noah's Born a Crime and his description of how his friends started hustling is a lot like Tortilla Flats to me. 2y
Texreader @mandarchy First the characters made me mad but once I got into it and understand where he was going I did enjoy it. I especially liked the character development 2y

Interesting book. I read an article where Steinbeck said he regretted writing this book due to its racist undertones. And this wasn't one of his popular books. I can see why.

I heard this touted as Steinbeck‘s funniest, but would have to respectfully disagree. While it is certainly very funny in some parts and I did enjoy it overall, nothing tops Cannery Row and its sequel Sweet Thursday for me. The characters of Tortilla Flat were less lovable imo and do a lot of questionable things. Still, I love Steinbeck‘s writing as always, and still found this enjoyable. 3.75⭐️

Tortilla Flat is funny, yet still Steinbeck-social-commentary-poignant (and there's so much of it to unpack from such a little package.) Danny and his disciples are hilariously the worst (except the Pirate!) and will make you facepalm, yet smile, at their endless ability to moralize away all manner of sins (or adventures, as they would call them.) Really good!
This completes my goal for #feastmode & gets me my very first completed #bookspinbingo !

Bailed on my #BookSpin read this month. ☹️Ugh...It turned out to be a poor novelization of the movie. But Steinbeck saved me on my #DoubleSpin with his farcical tale of friendship and loyalty among a handful of hapless hobos. His characters were pretty gruff, but each had true
heart buried deep within. Steinbeck‘s sharp imagery along with his engaging writing style never lets me down. 🙌🏻

This was another quick Steinbeck read. A somewhat entertaining series of inter-connected stories about Danny and his friends. It was somewhat similar to Cannery Row, but not quite as cohesive.

After a round of story telling, one of the characters, Pablo, comments on a story: "I like it. I like it because it hasn't any meaning you can see, and it still does seem to mean something. I can't tell what."
Pretty much sums up Tortilla Flat for me.

I have been in a huge life slump. Reading is just one thing that dropped off. Anyhow, I started this book back in September. It is very short but not entirely compelling reading. Not Steinbeck's best work, but not entirely without merit. Like so many classics , while not malicious, it is a racist and sexist product of it's time.

My first completed book since October.

This was a fun read. I can see where some might be rubbed the wrong way by Tortilla Flat due to the political incorrectness of the time when it was written but most of the shenanigans come across to me as innocent and harmless and the main characters to me seem to be colored positively, as likable knuckleheads.

My advice: buy a gallon of wine from Torrelli (wink), snuggle in with your best pooch and dig in to this short novel.

Would not the disrespect [...] be more if they went in rags than if they did not go at all?” Do you have an answer for these questions proposed in the book?

#SteinbeckShortsReadAlong

suvata I would probably not attend the funeral in rags, especially if everybody else was dressed nicely. I know that's vain but that's just the way I feel. I can mourn their loss privately just as well as I can at a funeral home. The deceased person doesn't care and why give the living people something to talk about. LOL 7y

Chapter 13:

⁉️ Although they are thieves, the 'paisanos' only steal things that they can justify as righteous according to their twisted moral values. Discuss this in reference to the plight of Señora Teresita Cortez.

#SteinbeckShortsReadAlong

Scurvygirl Therese and her brood needed food... in a big way. It had rained way to much even though she had lit her candles. The boys thought it would be a sin to let her children starve even though they were robbing from all the restaurants. But Teresa's kids were getting sick from the food. So one last score brought her hundreds of pounds of beans and healthy kids. Almost like Robin Hood. 7y
suvata @Scurvygirl I hadn't even considered the likeness to Robin Hood. Actually, I think that's more appropriate than in the preface where they compare it to the Knights of the Round Table. 7y
RealBooks4ever They believed they were justified in the theft because the beans were the only thing that would save the children. I think you're right @Scurvygirl in comparing them to Robin Hood in this instance. 7y

From Chapter 9:

⁉️ The incident with the vacuum cleaner clearly has a deeper meaning. What do you think the vacuum cleaner symbolizes?

#SteinbeckShortsReadAlong

Sace I have this hazy idea that it's a commentary on materialism. Or maybe that's too obvious. I need to think more to crystallize my thoughts.... 7y
suvata @RestlessFickleBookSlut Since the vacuum cleaner was empty, I think it's some kind of commentary on emptiness. But, I haven't quite nailed that one down yet either. 7y
Scurvygirl The vacuum was shady from the get go. The salesman let it go for $2 when he was selling it for $14. It was already empty as was the relationship. So @suvata you nailed it with that one. And @RestlessFickleBookSlut you got it with the girl focusing all her daily life back to when she was "vacuuming"! This chapter was comical. 7y

⁉️ In the Preface Steinbeck states that Danny's house was "[ . . . ] not unlike the Round Table, and Danny's friends were not unlike the knights of it." What does that say about their loyalty and friendship to each other? Do you agree with this comparison?

#SteinbeckShortsReadAlong

Scurvygirl I'm only four chapters in, but this is a very odd comparison. Pilon cannot pay the rent, so he gets another guy to live with him and when Danny wants just a couple of dollars towards it they trick Jesus Marie into moving in and giving money. Not very noble. Passing the buck and spending what money they have on wine. 7y
Sace I just hit chapter 5. I'm not well versed in Arthurian legend, but it seems to me that the arrangement is similar though not very noble. Pilon, Pablo and Jesús María have "pledged" their loyalty in exchange for protection of the "king". Danny has houses. Without the house, they would be living in ditches. Lol 7y
Sace I think Pilon is the more loyal. The other two got involved because Pilon pretty much swindled them. I'm not sure where they stand with Danny. 7y
See All 9 Comments
suvata @Scurvygirl On some level, they do appear to be great friends. But I think they are mostly friends out of convenience. It seems like they're always trying to scam each other for money to buy more wine. However, they do kind of leave Danny out of their wheelings and dealings 7y
suvata @RestlessFickleBookSlut I'm on chapter 8 and, so far, what you said is spot on. 7y
Sace I'm still obsessing about this question. Did Steinbeck set out to write an Arthurian Tales for the Americas? Because now it's totally reading that way (I just hit chapter 12.) I'm not sure if that was the goal or if my mind is making it so based on that one line in the preface. 7y
Sace Wait. Wait. What with the wine and all I guess is could also read a bit like Christ and his disciples...um in a weird kind of way... 7y
suvata @RestlessFickleBookSlut Interesting. I'm going to have to ponder that for a bit. 🤔 7y

Chapter 6

⁉️ Danny seems to get over the loss of his house quickly. He realizes the worthlessness of impermanent things like houses compared to spiritual things like friends. That seems like a healthy attitude but in light of today's materialistic society is it "easier said than done"?

#SteinbeckShortsReadAlong

suvata Personally, I think he was happy to be rid of the house. The house represented commitment and responsibility, both things Danny tries to avoid. (edited) 7y
britt_brooke He gets over it really quickly. Maybe it's because he was still relatively new to homeownership and the status that accompanies it? He's able to move on easily since he still has his own house. He's still better off than he was before when he had zero houses. Plus, he has his friends back without the burden of the rent issue. Simpler times. (edited) 7y
