Maigret and the Ghost
Maigret and the Ghost | Georges Simenon
5 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
Inspector Lognon - a plain-clothes detective with a reputation for misfortune - is shot in the street with the word 'ghost' on his lips. It soon emerges that he spent the night in the nearby apartment of a beautiful young woman, who has since vanished. While the injured man fights for his life in hospital, Chief Superintendent Maigret discovers that the hapless Inspector may finally have been on to something big. And when he encounters suave art dealer Norris Jonker and his glamorous wife Mirella, Maigret begins to wonder if their strange lifestyle is the reason for Lognon's presence on the Avenue Junot. In Maigret and the Ghost, Simenon's tenacious detective is perplexed by a constant stream of conflicting evidence as he explores the underground world of art collecting.

In this mystery, a fellow policeman is shot multiple times it‘s first surmised,by gangsters. What follows is an investigation featuring Maigret‘s thoughtful pipe smoking, ingenious detection, his infallible processing of all the pieces of the puzzle until its whole emerges, & his slowly building to intensity interrogation techniques, both verbal,& nonverbal. To his wife‘s delight, he calls upon her to help him over a memorable lunch. 🔽

#wondrouswednesday

📚 I have no specific memory but rather it‘s the feeling of excitement & anticipation I felt when my mom would take all of us to the library on Saturdays.

📚I get books from: audible, kindle, library, neighbors, bookstores.Often I find Blackwells of UK with lower prices & earlier publishing dates. Thanks to @LeahBergen for that online bookstore referral!

I liked it. I liked it a lot. A good old fashioned underplayed story with Maigret working away quietly to solve the crime mostly on his own. I obviously pictured Atkinson, I feel he plays the role as written by Simenon. Will be seeking out more Maigret stories.

I'm heading to #bloodyscotland in September so my mission is now to read books related to events I'll be at. First up this Georges Simenon book as his son will be at one event. Have also been watching the pretty decent Rowan Atkinson adaptations.
