Lesson in Secrets
Lesson in Secrets | Jacqueline Winspear
32 posts | 46 read | 16 to read
From New York Times bestselling author Jacqueline Winspear, now available in paperback-- the latest episode in the New York Times bestselling series, Maisie Dobbs' first assignment for the British Secret Service takes her undercover to Cambridge as a professor, and leads to the investigation of a web of activities being conducted by the emerging Nazi party.Private investigator Maisie Dobbs receives her first assignment from the British Secret Service in A Lesson in Secrets, the eighth book in Jacqueline Winspear's award-winning mystery series. Sent to pose as a junior lecturer at a private college in Cambridge, she will monitor any activities "not in the interests of His Majesty's government." When the college's pacifist founder is murdered, Maisie finds herself in the midst of sinister web of murder, scandal, and conspiracy, activities that point towards members of the ascendant Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei--the Nazi Party--on Britain's shores. An instant classic, and sure to captivate long-time Maisie Dobbs fans as well as readers of Agatha Christie, Elizabeth George, and Alexander McCall Smith, A Lesson in Secrets is "a powerful and complex novel, one that will linger in memory as a testament to her talent and her humanity" (Richmond Times-Dispatch).

I always love returning to Maisie's world. She goes undercover to teach at a school promoting peace when a famous author is murdered. This wasn't my favorite of the mysteries, but I loved seeing this slice of history. So many books cover WWI & WWII, but this part of the series focuses on the '30s when Europe was still reeling from the devastating effects of the first war and Nazis were beginning to rise to power.

This is probably my least favorite Maisie Dobbs book so far. It felt like a place filler, and Maisie honestly didn‘t feel like the Maisie of last books. I hope it‘s just a mid-series slump, and not a sign of things to come!

The grasshopper pie that Maya made was yummy, and matched quite well!

BennettBookworm That looks so yummy!! 4y

I haven‘t done a #WeeklyForecast in ages, but life will be a little slower this week ☺️

Hoping to finish up the Maisie Dobbs novel today so I don‘t have to bring it along to our cabin retreat tomorrow. I have a few other ebooks on standby in case I get through these before coming home on Thursday.

Cinfhen Enjoy your getaway ❤️ 4y

I legit spent an hour tonight trying to figure out which book to read next. I have some powerhouse reads on my shelf right now: Kindred by Octavia Butler, The Girl With the Louding Voice, and the Color of Law.

But I had insomnia last night, and don‘t think I can do those books justice until I get a good night‘s 😴. So picking up the next Maisie Dobbs until then.

And yes, I am in my 🕎 PJs. In June. 😄

#wonderouswednesday @Eggs

1. All of the options. Just depends on the situation.

2. Depends on the book and how much reading time I have.

3. Nothing specific has been a DNF this year, but there have been books I have put aside for the time being like A Lesson in Secrets.

1. We had like an ice, rain, wind, bit of snow storm starting on Thursday. Sun is shining today but chilly!
2. Fuzzy socks. If my feet are cold, I am cold. I find in winter I read more mysteries like Maisie Dobbs type stuff.

Meaw_catlady Thanks for sharing! Blessings to you! 🖤🌝 5y

I continue to love this series. Seeing Maisie undercover and in an academic atmosphere was interesting. I also liked that we get more of her personal life in this one. #audiowalk

Trouble is brewing in Germany, and Maisie Dobbs is sent undercover to a pacifist-leaning university in Cambridge to ascertain whether there are subversive activities going on amongst the international professors. The book addresses the fact that there were some Nazi sympathizers amongst the well-to-do, educated students at the time. They were drawn to the populist nature of the fascist movement. Another solid read in this series.

Louise @Crazeedi @minkyb Yes, I agree; this series is so good! I binge listened to the books a bit out of chronological order. Now I have to wait for the next one to be released. And for Winspear to write more! 6y

I love Maisie Dobbs! Such a great historical fiction cozy mystery series! You can feel the time period is on the cusp of WWII as Hitler and his political party are mentioned more in this book. It was in interesting twist to see Maisie not in her usual role as an investigator but as an instructor at a college. Can‘t wait to see what‘s up next for Maisie!

The book was great, Maisie at her finest. The series is getting darker and causing a little anxiety. The threat of WWII is growing and I just know she‘s going to be right in the middle of it. The Nazi party is getting more mentions with each book. Can‘t wait to start the next one.

Carrying on my historical fiction stint by reading the next book in the fabulous Maisie Dobbs Series. Some quite tumultuous events happened for Maisie in the last book, which could lead to some BIG changes in her professional and personal life, so will be interested to see where these are taken! I also have an inkling she will be looking to help Billy and his family more in this book - they definitely need it!

Lmstraubie Yay Maisie!🙆 7y

Maisie‘s case has, as usual, interesting ties to World War I—but readers begin to see the approach of World War II, too—and as she investigates under the guise of a lecturer, the truth behind all the secrets unfolds with excellent mystery. Well-crafted and well-paced, the mystery involves murder, conspiracy, and deceit and will surely keep readers intrigued to the end. (I received a free copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.)

Four + hours in the car with Maisie today. Travel is so much better with a good audiobook. Hold placed on Elegy for Eddie - next in the series.

After a really deep emotional read like Homegoing, I needed a lighter fare. The audiobooks in the#is series are SO soothing. The narrator's voice is velvet. I usually like to speed up an audiobook, but I just love keeping this at the languorous pace which is just lovely. Happy Friday, Littens!

nickimags The narrator really makes this series! ☺ 8y
HardcoverHearts @nickimags - Yes, she does. She brings that quiet introspection feel to the audiobooks that you get when you read it. I can only imagine how hard it must be to emphasize thoughtfulness and introvert in your voice, but she does it so well. 8y
