The Sea-Wolf is a 1904 psychological adventure novel by American novelist Jack London. The book's protagonist, Humphrey van Weyden, is a literary critic who is a survivor of an ocean collision and who comes under the dominance of Wolf Larsen, the powerful and amoral sea captain who rescues him. Its first printing of forty thousand copies was immediately sold out before publication on the strength of London's previous The Call of the Wild. Ambrose Bierce wrote, "The great thing-and it is among the greatest of things-is that tremendous creation, Wolf Larsen... the hewing out and setting up of such a figure is enough for a man to do in one lifetime... The love element, with its absurd suppressions, and impossible proprieties, is awful."

What a lucky Open Bookshelf find! 🤩 I loved this book from start to end. This Wolf Larsen sure is some kind of character. The descriptions of life at sea were a great addition to an already great book ❤️ Definitely my highlight in October!

JanuarieTimewalker13 I started this years ago and then just let it sit. I must revisit. I think my edition is just too small and it‘s hard to see, but maybe I‘ll put this on for 2021 4y
JanuarieTimewalker13 If you haven‘t read The Call Of The Wild, you must!! Great book!! 4y

Started reading Sea Wolf on Serial Reader.

Jack London was rather hot! And, according to bios I‘m reading online, also rather racist. 😬 Need to research this some more.

#QuotsyMay19 Day 9: I only know of Jack London‘s “Call Of The Wild.” This sounds fairly interesting, too. Filled with #Enigma.

4/5⭐️ Not that I haven‘t read worse in modern books, or even that it‘s bad, but I didn‘t look for such open violence in 1904 pop adventure. I expected Wolf to turn out to be a tough yet moral man, but he only got worse every chapter. This made the book unpredictable for me, as was its final fourth. Although the romance was sweet and danger fun, the adventure was weighed down by the repetitive philosophical fights and incomprehensible ship jargon.

Probably one of the most philosophical books I‘ve ever read.

Humphrey had the perfect life till his ship perished and he was picked up by the sealing crew aboard the Ghost with Wolf Larsen as the captain!

This book made me think. And the song had a line about never breaking your heart, which Humphrey does not do to Maud; super sweet!

Sha0102 I've just read it and I just loved the mixture of adventure and some real deep discussions. 😚 7y

Great book! Adventure + philosophical discussions = ❤ It was quite a JOURNEY !!! "A thrilling epic of a sea voyage and a complex novel of ideas, The Sea-Wolf is a standard-bearer of its genre. It is the vivid story of a gentleman scholar, Humphrey Van Weyden, who is rescued by a seal-hunting schooner after a ferryboat accident in San Francisco Bay."

Entertaining level: ⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵ #2017Sha

Student presentation on Jack London's adventure novel "The Sea-Wolf," complete with photoshopped "sea-wolf." ??

Fun fact: the mascot at my alma mater was the #Seawolf!

Saknicole Omg I love it. I wish we had tried to visualize the sea wolf as cool as that 8y
Texreader The did a good job photoshopping! 8y

A couple of these are audio books. One is a book club book. And another is historical research for my creative writing novel.
Hoping to finish some this month and progress further through others.

The book on my phone for when I find those spare minutes to read!

LeahBergen I really enjoyed this one! 8y
CrowCAH @Leahbear only read the first two chapters so far and it seems pretty engaging. I'm trying to get into the flow of the language, I feel like I'm reading it slow and having to pause to reorganize the meaning of the text. Which is weird since I read a lot of classics that use archaic dialect. Maybe once I read more than a chapter at a time it will get better. 8y
