A Room of One's Own/Three Guineas
A Room of One's Own/Three Guineas | Virginia Woolf
7 posts | 8 read | 2 reading | 8 to read
A Room of One's Own, based on a lecture given at Girton College Cambridge, is one of the great feminist polemics, ranging in its themes from Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte to the silent fate of Shakespeare's gifted (imaginary) sister and the effects of poverty and sexual constraint on female creativity. Three Guineas was published almost a decade later and breaks new ground in its discussion of men, militarism and women's attitudes towards war. These two pieces reveal Virginia Woolf's fiery spirit and sophisticated wit and confirm her status as a highly inspirational essayist.

Pickpick

Yesterday‘s Lifeline Cardiff purchases for the grand total of $13. Most of these are gifts for the kids but the rest are treats for me. I‘m all alone this weekend & I‘m loving it. My step children & partner are away. I‘m having big sleeps & tea & treats in bed. I went to ballet class yesterday, shopped for hrs, drank some nice wine & did some decluttering. Today I‘m off to watch Hustlers, the movie in a Gold Class Cinema=cocktails & yummy food.

LeeRHarry That sounds like a perfect weekend! Have fun in Gold Class! 😊 5y

I am loving this book! It's so witty. I have liked both of Virginia Woolf's novels I have read so far, but it did take me a while to get into them - with this one it was immediate! A fascinating argument about why there weren't as many women writers ( and on misogyny in general). Great so far! Can't wait to get to the weekend so I have some actual free time to read!
