Trickster: Native American Tales, a Graphic Collection, 10th Anniversary Edition | Matt Dembicki

I borrowed this from Libby the other day and read about half before giving up. The digital quality is terrible, it was really tough to make out the words! And I wasn‘t engrossed enough to slog through any more. It‘s a collection of graphic stories of traditional Native American trickster tales. I might recommend a print version for kids looking for an introduction to these legends, but personally I‘d much rather read a more traditional version.

Aimeesue Hoopla seems to have 2 versions - a 2016 edition and one from 2021. The 2021 reads well for me and the quality seems fine, so maybe they redid it due to the issues you mentioned? 2y

so-so

A collaboration between comic book illustrators and Native storytellers, this book offers almost two dozen tales of trickery. My son enjoyed it but found a lot of the stories confusing. They don't follow a logic he expects. I'm not a fan of the comic book style and can't tell if the stories seem odd to me because of the format or because of cultural differences in storytelling. Either way, it's an interesting book but one I probably won't re-read.

ravenlee I‘ve always loved folk tales, but the last few collections have left me with a bad taste. I get a ā€you had to be thereā€¯ kind of vibe, is the best way I can describe it. Sometimes it seems the translation from oral storytelling tradition to written tale just falls flat, and what frustrates me is that they just leave it there. Very unsatisfying. 5y

ImperfectCJ @ravenlee I looked through some of the reviews for this collection on Goodreads, and it looks like I'm not the only one who found it lacking. You might be onto something with the idea that they take something from an oral tradition and don't put in the work to translate it (so to speak) for the new medium. 5y

I'm torn on this one. About half of the stories I enjoyed and the other half I wasn't a fan of. Some of them it was the artwork that I didn't like since each tale is drawn by a different artist. If you're interested in Native American tales it's worth checking out.

A really cute graphic novel. Beautiful artwork! Pretty quick read, around 200 pages.
