What Not to Do If You Turn Invisible
What Not to Do If You Turn Invisible | Ross Welford
6 posts | 5 read | 1 reading | 2 to read
From the author of the unforgettable bestseller TIME TRAVELLING WITH A HAMSTER comes another surprising, beautiful and funny novel about a child who, by disappearing, will write herself into your heart forever... Turning invisible at will: it's one way of curing your acne. But far more drastic than 13 year-old Ethel Leatherhead intended when she tried a combination of untested medicines and a sunbed. It's fun at first, being invisible. And aided by her friend Boydy, she manages to keep her extraordinary ability secret. Or does she...' When one day the invisibility fails to wear off, Ethel is thrown into a nightmare of lies and deception as she struggles to keep herself safe, to find the remedy that will make her seen again - and solve the mystery of her own birth...

Andrew65 That‘s great. I enjoyed the Six of Crows. 😊 5y
julesG @Andrew65 We're reading it in German now. I've already read it this spring. 5y
AlaMich How does English instruction work in German schools? I guess I‘m asking how much time they spend in English instruction? This fascinates me because in the US we are horrible about teaching other languages, in terms of actual time spent working in the L2. (edited) 5y
julesG @AlaMich My kids both started learning English from 1st grade on, at the age of 6. They started with 3 times 45 minutes of English per week. From 5th grade on my son has had 5 times 45 minutes English per week. Depending on the teacher's abilities it's immersion learning/teaching from 1st grade on. The older the kids get, the more they speak English exclusively in class. Later on, they might have some subjects in L2. But it depends on the school. 5y
AlaMich @julesG Immersion instruction in US public schools only really exists in areas where there are large communities of non-native English speakers. It usually takes the form of “dual-language” immersion, with part of the day in English and part of the day in X (usually Spanish). And that is probably more than you ever wanted to know on the subject. 😉 5y
julesG @AlaMich No, it's interesting. I used to teach English as a Second Language, so it's interesting to see how other countries handle L2 learning. 5y
Macker11 @julesG @AlaMich I‘m here in Florida US which is heavy population of L2 because of the devastation in Puerto Rico this year. They are now immersing children in the classroom at all times with exceptions of being pulled out for an hour to strengthen themselves. 5y

“Just before I fell asleep,I could see myself. I was visible, and I knew who I was. That was before.”

I think children would enjoy reading this book because the whole concept has to do with “being invisible”, which is something that many children are interested in. It allows them to use their imaginations as well.

Pickpick

Genre: Modern Fantasy
This book is about a girl who “is just wanting to clear her acne, but instead becomes invisible” and must find out how to become “visible” again, all while keeping her secret and finding out who she really is. I thought this was a very different, but interesting storyline that would keep you wanting to know more.

"Brilliant" is Seth's review of both of these. He whizzed through them both. I love it when he enjoys a book with a female main character; we need more of them so recommendations very welcome! #raisingreaders
