Alas, I picked this collection up because I heard about one quirky story, and it turned out to be the only one slightly quirky. The stories that seem to be pulled from the author's personal history, as much for their possible veracity as shorter length, most made me pause. This collection often deals with solemn or uncomfortable subject matter. The quality of the writing kept me going, but I prefer fun-weird to sad literary in short stories.

December 25 (a cola days late): The George Spelvin Players by Rebecca Makkai. Story published in Pleiades.

George Spelvin is a theatre troupe who is setting up The Christmas Carol. Together they decide to ask a soap opera star to join and he accepts.

I'm only three stories in to this collection, but it's excellent so far. I have the feeling that I've read this before, but I can't think of when... #shortstories #women #womenauthors

And because I was at bookpeople... I had to check out the sale wall before heading home. I snagged these three gems. A good #bookhaul 😃

This was just so good! I had to space each story out to let it sink in & allow myself time to recover & reset after each one.

Some really great stories in this collection. I particularly enjoyed The Briefcase and Good Saint Anthony Come Around.

I don't know how to narrow down my favorite collection of #shortstories. Out of the ones I own, here are my favorites. I'm tagging Rebecca Makkai's collection because it's brilliant and under-appreciated. (Though the same can be said for others in this stack as well.)

Today's library haul!

Good collection of short stories. I enjoyed the mix of settings and time periods. Some modern, set in the U.S., some set in the past, especially Cold War/communist Eastern Europe.
