Roasting in Hell's Kitchen
Roasting in Hell's Kitchen | Gordon Ramsay
17 posts | 13 read | 8 to read
Everyone thinks they know the real Gordon Ramsay: rude, loud, pathologically driven, stubborn as hell For the first time, Ramsay tells the full inside story of his life and how he became the world's most famous and infamous chef: his difficult childhood, his brother's heroin addiction, his failed first career as a soccer player, his fanatical pursuit of gastronomic perfection and his TV personaall of the things that made him the celebrated culinary talent and media powerhouse that he is today. In Roasting in Hell's Kitchen Ramsay talks frankly about his tough and emotional childhood, including his father's alcoholism and violence and their effect on his relationships with his mother and siblings. His rootless upbringing saw him moving from house to house and town to town followed by the authorities and debtors as his father lurched from one failed job to another. He recounts his short-circuited career as a soccer player, when he was signed by Scotland's premier club at the age of fifteen but then, just two years later, dropped out when injury dashed his hopes. Ramsay searched for another vocation and, much to his father's disgust, went into catering, which his father felt was meant for poofs. He trained under some of the most famous and talented chefs in Europe, working to exacting standards and under extreme conditions that would sometimes erupt in physical violence. But he thrived, with his exquisite palate, incredible vision and relentless work ethic. Dish by dish, restaurant by restaurant, he gradually built a Michelin-starred empire. A candid, eye-opening look into the extraordinary life and mind of an elite and unique restaurateur and chef, Roasting in Hell's Kitchen will change your perception not only of Gordon Ramsay but of the world of cuisine.

How quickly can I tell if a new cook is going to cut the mustard? Within a day, is the honest answer--and inside a week you can identify whether they're going to be with you for two years or five.

I have vaguely had Kitchen Nightmares (the super gross American one) going on in the background while I‘ve read the past two days. I totally forgot that Wednesday is our “carry in” night and the though of restaurant food makes me 🤢! 😬😬

So I‘m working on my remaining #BOTM choices (Ware, One to Watch, and Mina Lee), and maybe I‘ll just warm up something frozen. 🤷🏻‍♀️🥴

vivastory Ramsay opened a restaurant here recently 4y
Megabooks @vivastory I am really bad about figuring out/remembering what city people live in. Where are you, Scott? 4y
vivastory I'm in KC 4y

BarbaraBB That series was an eye opener indeed! 4y
BarbaraBB @vivastory Are you going to eat there Scott? I‘ve never been to a Ramsey restaurant. 4y
vivastory @BarbaraBB I will probably try it eventually. I'm only doing carryout service right now at restaurants, so it could be awhile before I try it 4y
Megabooks @vivastory Interesting! I‘d definitely be curious about it. I‘m not eating in restaurants now either. 4y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB yes! Although I think the American one had a more pronounced gross out factor than its British predecessor. 4y
BarbaraBB Lol, probably! 4y
BarbaraBB @vivastory @Megabooks Are restaurants open? I do eat in them but there are many rules and few tables. 4y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB they shouldn‘t be because the infection/death rate is climbing here, but they are at 30% capacity and you have to wear a mask until food arrives. The big “bombshell” here is that Trump knew more than he said and actively chose to play it down. I don‘t know why anyone is shocked by that, though. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ 4y
vivastory @Megabooks @BarbaraBB I am SHOCKED. In other breaking news water is wet & the sky is blue. Stay tuned for more. 4y
Megabooks @vivastory well Scott before I throw it back to you at the weather desk, it seems Covid is up among college students taking in-person classes! 😳 i, for one, would totally trust a bunch of 19 year olds to always wear masks and social distance. Plus, have you heard? Faith in public and private institutions to put public health in front of profits is at an all time high. Wait a second, Scott, this says...low?!? Well, I‘ll be! Now back to you talking 4y
Megabooks @vivastory about...wildfires started by, gender reveal parties?! Okay, seriously I am fucking over America, 2020, Trump!!! 😩😩🤬 @BarbaraBB see this post and ⬆️ (edited) 4y
BarbaraBB @vivastory @Megabooks I wish I could say to you to hang on for just a few more months but I am not sure of that until it‘s a fact 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ 4y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB right? 😬😞 4y

Humble Pie | Gordon Ramsay

We need to get back our feeling for ingredients, for running a kitchen budget. We need to get closer to what we eat, to look at it more, to love it and pay it attention.

What makes a three-starred Michelin restaurant? Consistency. Every night must be to the same very high standard.

I know how it feels to be in a corner, unnoticed and unloved.

The abuse I‘d had from Dad had no point, but with Marco, the more tough he was on you, the more you felt yourself becoming better.

Then I saw the look in his eyes and I bolted. For the first time, I felt that he really might kill me. I saw something in his eyes that day – a kind of madness.

It‘s funny, really, that people think of me as so forceful and combative, because that‘s the precise opposite of how I was as a kid.

#Winterwonderland #TenthAvenueFreezeout I looked this song up and people believe the neighborhood he was talking about in this song was Hell‘s Kitchen in Manhattan. I haven‘t read this book but this show, being the Jerry Springer of cooking competition shows, hooks me every time. Lol

TrishB People are obsessed with cooking shows aren‘t they! 6y
Cinfhen Again, like the thought process 💡💡 6y
sprainedbrain I‘m so ridiculously attracted to Gordon Ramsay, and I have no idea why. 😍😂 6y
Reggie @sprainedbrain I get it, 😂, he can cook and has a bit of an alpha male thing about him. I get it. 6y
sprainedbrain @Reggie I appreciate that... my teenage daughters don‘t get it and tell me I‘m weird. 😂 6y

Gordon is well known for swearing! #iswear #heatofjuly

I can't read books with too much swearing - I find it unnecessary.

@Cinfhen @BarbaraBB

Cinfhen Good pick!! I‘ve got a potty mouth but I agree, swearing isn‘t necessary but sometimes it feels really good to let it all out 🤬🤬🤬 6y

BarbaraBB I don‘t like it in books too much either, even though I am rather good in it myself, I‘m sorry to say... 6y

saresmoore I 💜 Chef Ramsay, too! 8y
Shortstack How was Ramsay's memoir? 8y
CrowCAH Happy Pi Day; 3.14!!! 8y
sprainedbrain @Shortstack I enjoyed it. It's mainly about his life before and outside of his celebrity chef experience. 8y
LeslieO Those two on your TBR are two of my favorites! 8y
Listener15 Just finished "The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie" and it was a lot of fun! I'm almost done with "The Guernesey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" and am loving it. Both are very funny but also with sad/hard parts. Can't wait to see what you think about them. 8y
LornaDH Neil says I'm a Gordon fan-girl! 💜 8y
sprainedbrain @LornaDH Haha! Nothing wrong with that. 😍 8y

Love audio memoirs!!! 💙 There's just something about hearing their story being told in their own voice.

Thedrunkstrawberry My favorite thing to listen to are celebrity memoirs where they read their own! I'll have to check this out! 8y
kchace @Thedrunkstrawberry Its always better when they read their own!! 8y
