King's Curse
King's Curse | Philippa Gregory
From the #1 "New York Times" bestselling author behind the acclaimed Starz series "The White Queen" comes the story of lady-in-waiting Margaret Pole and her unique view of King Henry VIII s stratospheric rise to power in Tudor England. As an heir to the Plantagenets, Margaret is seen by the King s mother, the Red Queen, as a rival to the Tudor claim to the throne. She is buried in marriage to a Tudor supporter Sir Richard Pole, governor of Wales and becomes guardian to Arthur, the young Prince of Wales, and his beautiful bride, Katherine of Aragon. But Margaret s destiny, as cousin to the White Princess, is not for a life in the shadows. Tragedy throws her into poverty, yet a royal death restores her to her place at young Henry VIII s court where she becomes chief lady-in-waiting to Queen Katherine. There she watches the dominance of the Spanish queen over her husband and her tragic decline. Amid the rapid deterioration of the Tudor court, Margaret must choose whether her allegiance is to the increasingly tyrannical Henry VIII or to her beloved queen. Caught between the old and the new, Margaret must find her own way, concealing her knowledge that an old curse cast upon all the Tudors is slowly coming true..."

How heartbreaking!!! What an ending! What a terrible time in history, and what power does to ppl with no one to keep them in check! I feel like I really got to know the people I have been reading through this series so to read how it turned out for so many of them is just jaw dropping- wonderfully written as always with Philippa Gregory

So close to finally finishing this book! I‘m kind of sad because I have fell in love with it!! It started out a bit slow- partly for me because this is the story of Margaret Pole and up until now she was not a favorite of mine, I‘m not sure exactly why now ! Or maybe as she got older she was more admirable- anyways it was a crazy time with Henry VIII 🤯

Butterfinger The ending stuck with me for a long time. I will look forward to your review. 5y
Lauraandherbooks @Butterfinger yes i am looking forward to moving on in this series but I‘m taking my time finishing this book cus I know according to history it does not go well for Margaret pole and I dread that 😔 5y

Here we go, next book in the series, but in this book I think it looks like we are going back several if not many years to take up the view of things from another family member , ok then 📚

⭐⭐⭐⭐
A fun if distressing read (because if the ending). Gregory's attention to detail and empathy for the human psychology is enhanced by her vivid imagination, lending a fully immersive narrative into medieval politics. Will definitely seek out more of her books!

I really enjoyed this installment of Philippa Gregory‘s series. I‘ve always found Margaret Pole to be one of the more interesting characters in the whole Plantagenet/Tudor saga. I can‘t imagine living the life of anxiety she must have endured knowing her family‘s safety was at the mercy of whatever political whim was currently prevalent. The author‘s note at the end was particularly interesting and food for thought.

Butterfinger I remember how gripping her death scene was. Stayed with me for a long time. 6y
Ericalambbrown @Butterfinger I had wondered how they would do that because the written accounts from witnesses I‘d read were brutal! I thought it was well done, but it‘ll certainly give me a bit of a hangover. 6y

The events if the Tudor reign told from the point of view of Margaret Pole, a Plantagenet niece of Edward IV and Richard III. Not my favorite of this series, but still good.

Rissa1 I just purchased a copy of this, today. 6y

This book was truly phenomenal 👍As a big fan of Philippa Gregory I‘m not sure I can give a poor review of any of her books, because she never disappoints me. This book is brilliant 😊 I love the story of the Pole family and especially Margaret. Even though I knew the end from the start, I loved every page. I‘m not doing this book justice in this review so I‘ll just say: if you like historical fiction, read it 😘 you won‘t regret it 😊

I rarely so slam a book but I invested 25+ hours listening to it and I am so disappointed. 99% of the story is told in dialogue recollecting events that took place or bemoaning fear of what is to come. In other words, 99% of no action. Can anyone tell me whether this is this author 's usual style? What's worse is the narrator is so overly dramatic. I don't recommend it. 🌟🌟

Cathythoughts Oh dear 🙄, I hope your next book is absolutely brilliant !!!! 7y
TrishB I gave up on her books a long time ago. Not for me. 7y
JacqMac Her books are all very similar. If you didn't like this one you won't like the rest. She's one of my favorites though. 7y
GinEyre22 Her older books are better. She's been phoning it in recently... 7y

TrishB Read this and thought it was awful. I'm not into her books at all. 7y

I am a huge fan of Tudor history and I love Philippa Gregory's focus on the women around the Cousins' War, so I could not wait to read this one. I expected to love it. Instead, I felt it dragged more and more as the book went on. I was interested to learn more about Margaret Pole, the main character in the book, but the writing didn't hold me in this book as it has in other books by Gregory. I'd rate this between a pick and a so-so.
