It's been a while since I read bk2 in this series, so was really pleased to pick this one up and enjoy this Danish thriller with the grumpy but very funny detective morck. Here, a message in a bottle is washed up on a Scottish beach + eventually lands on department q's desk. With his two odd assistants, the investigation becomes a hunt for missing children and a particularly clever villain

Cathythoughts I must look up this series , sounds good ! 2y

I really like this series. This is the third installment. The core characters are lovely and quite amusing. I look forward to finding out what the deal is with Assad. This one starts with a pair of boys being held captive. There's a lot going on, actually. It kept me engaged.

💤 💤 💤 I found this one a real snooze fest. Never felt I really got into it or cared and found much of it boring, and it was a long bore too. Don‘t know if it was the subject matter or the narrator of this audiobook. Let‘s hope these get better. This is the weakest of the original three #NordicNoir Series. Not really interested in all the characters. All that boring talk about health and safety and asbestos too. 👎👎👎

EadieB Seems I felt the same way: Message in a bottle from 13 years ago have Carl and gang wondering about 2 young Danish boys who are missing. Removing side plots that have nothing to with main plot could have made book shorter and not so boring. Action only picked up towards the end. Rose/Yrsa character was interesting. Hope to find out more about this. Kidnapping and religious fanaticism main themes. Hoping for a shorter book next time!
4y
Andrew65 @EadieB Yet again sharing same views and opinions. Felt this was the worst one in the series so far. 4y
EadieB @Andrew65 I would agree. They actually get better after this one. But books are still too long. (edited) 4y

Andrew65 @EadieB Way too long and as you say too many subplots. 4y
EadieB @Andrew65 Here‘s what I rated the other books: Book 4 - 4 stars Book 5 - 4 stars Book 6-5 stars Book 7-3 stars Book 8-4 stars 4y
Andrew65 @EadieB Alart from book 7 sounds more promising. Thanks. 4y
Tove_Reads 5 and 8 were my faves, if I remember correctly. 7 was not for me. Felt that it was a bit pointless. 4y
Tove_Reads But, you get attached to the three main characters. 4y
EadieB @Andrew65 I‘ m answering the 3rd section on Lost Girls. Seems to be missing the last question about what rating to give. Check to see if you posted all the questions. 4y
Andrew65 @EadieB Will do Librarything was playing up when I posted them! 4y
Andrew65 @EadieB Fixed, thanks 😊 4y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Not happened for me so far. 4y
EadieB @Andrew65 I hope I am still in the running for your personal assistant 4y
Andrew65 @EadieB I think you‘ve talked yourself into the job! 4y
EadieB @Andrew65 Hopefully I can do the job online. I can proofread for you before you post information. 4y
Andrew65 @EadieB Somebody definitely needs to do that with the stupid way the iPad corrects words into nonsense. I think often changes to I honk! 🙈 4y
EadieB @Andrew65 I know that‘s why you need a proofreader. 4y
Butterfinger @Andrew65 @EadieB @Tove_Reads the last one was my favorite. It was all about Assad and it had some thrilling scenes. You also had a side plot that made me roll my eyes. 4y
EadieB @Butterfinger I liked the last one too but it only got 4 stars from me. 4y
tracey38 What a bummer! 4y
gradcat I‘m over here just cracking up...I cannot believe how different our opinions regarding this series are...couldn‘t be any farther apart!! 😱🤣😂 4y
Andrew65 @gradcat Going to try a physical book and see if that improves them. 4y

I‘m way behind on this series, but am starting the third book in the Department Q series. #NordicNoir

Crazeedi You're doing great Andrew! 4y
EadieB You‘ll have it done in no time! Are you doing audio to and home from school? I‘m reading (edited) 4y
gradcat It‘s really hard to keep up with everything! Have you started the Iceland detective books yet? @Tove_Reads has questions posted for the tagged book. I‘m way behind on posting reviews, but I am managing to get some reading done. 4y

gradcat @EadieB I‘m currently reading the tagged book...thank you so much for sending me the book! ♥️ 4y
Andrew65 @EadieB I enjoyed Lazarus. I‘m doing Redemption on Audible and currently 4 hrs 42 mins out of 17 hrs 18 mins. Also own 6 and 7 on Audible, used my credits to buy them when they were on a 2 for 1 offer. 4y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi Thanks, need all encouragement I can get at the moment. 😊🥰 4y
Andrew65 @gradcat It is hard to keep up amongst everything going on. Not started either of the new series but have downloaded Jar City from the library. 4y
EadieB @Andrew65 Thats great that you have the audibles. These books are a drag sometimes when you have to read the book or do kindle. (edited) 4y
EadieB @gradcat Great that you are reading Snow Falling on Cedars. I really liked the movie. I haven‘t started the Iceland book. I‘m a few books behind in the Camilla Lackberg series. (edited) 4y
Andrew65 @EadieB Yes much easier with audiobooks, can listen to and from school, and follow with the ebook when at home. 4y
Andrew65 @EadieB @gradcat I enjoyed the Camilla Lackberg series and the last one has a bit of a different feel to the previous two and even has a section from the seventeenth century which was really good. Had a mixture of audiobooks and ebooks for this series. (edited) 4y
EadieB @Andrew65 Lackberg‘s books read faster than Kepler and Adler Olsen‘s for me. Must be the translation is better than the others. 4y
gradcat @EadieB I‘m way behind with everything in my life, it seems like! 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️ 4y

I finally finished! I'm really enjoying this series, Carl, Assad and Rose are a quirky team. They are searching for the answer to a message in a bottle from 15 years ago. And this leads them on a wild chase to find a mass murderer

Butterfinger That one was so sad. It is hard to read when it's about children. 5y
EadieB Nice that you finally finished! 5y
Andrew65 Still working through book 2, currently on 40%. Well done 😊 4y

Mehso-so

Parent's worst nightmare - precious children are kidnapped. A controlling brute - abused by leaders in the Church. A detective and his crew - persevered to find the children. It would have been a great book, if not for the major flaw of being too much like Hill Street Blues. I remember how chaotic the police station was and the book was chaotic with the side action. Way too much.

Andrew65 Good review, but not particularly making me want to read it! 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Thanks! It‘s a real chore reading this author! 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB I still have book 2 to read, just not feeling motivated to read it! 🤔 5y
See All 11 Comments
EadieB @Andrew65 The story is good but too long of a book and boring in parts. Hard to get motivated to read it so the audio helps. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB My audiobook credits have run out and unfortunately not available through libraries. My audible credits refresh on 30th April. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Too many other good books out there to read instead of these Nordic books that me 3 or 4 days to read. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB 100% agree. Last year Adrian McKinty, Mo Hayder, and Jane Casey were great reads. These are definitely not. Don‘t think they‘d even make it in to my top 5000 books list! 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 I think it's time to give Jussi Alder-Olsen the boot. I'm going to read one more Lackberg and Kepler book and if they don't shape up, they will be gone off my list too. (edited) 5y
Crazeedi I'll read one more of each and let you know @EadieB @Andrew65 5y

Just finished the audio of this one. The audio was a new experience and I suddenly noticed things I hadn‘t noticed before.

In this story Carl, Assad and Rose/ Yrsa are trying to solve two mysteries. Department Q suddenly finds themselves in possession of a bottle with an old letter in it and they start the work to interpret the letter. They are also looking into an old fire case. Both cases suddenly became very less cold and they investigate.

Butterfinger It is so funny how titles change. My title is Conspiracy of Faith. 5y

Marina_h I liked this one but I still feel like the books are too long. 5y
Tove_Reads I still like the first book the most. In this one I liked that there was more about the main characters than in the last one. Could easily be 20% shorter and then be a better book. 5y
Butterfinger A lot of crimes were being covered - the arson and the Serbs, the kidnappings (main story), the gang wars. I keep thinking that surely the stories will converge. And, we still have the overriding mystery of who attacked Carl and Hardy. 5y
See All 6 Comments
Butterfinger Still a pick though. 5y
AnneCecilie I felt that more happened in this book, and there was more of an immediacy since the cold cases weren‘t as cold and happening in the present too. 5y
EadieB We could have done without all the side plots that has nothing to do with the main plot. Still too wordy and boring in parts. Very slow in the beginning - better pace in the last parts. 5y

Marina_h I think he is. I've thought from the beginning that he actually has a real big heart and wants to make sure people around him a doing good. I also think he cares for Assad evrn though he seems to get on Carl's nerves sometimes. But I think Carl may be worried about what it is that's going on with Assad 5y
Tove_Reads @Marina_h at least he put his foot down when it came to his ex. 5y

Marina_h Honestly that is one if the side stories I could do without. I don't really feel like we get to know Mona so it's all a bit shallow and uninteresting to me. But I'm wondering if the other psychologist will show up again. He seemed like he could push some of Carl's buttons 5y
Tove_Reads @Marina_h I don‘t really see this relationship going anywhere to be honest. 5y
Butterfinger Especially when he still has feelings for the ex. He doesn't want her living with them, but he acted jealous of her new man. 5y
AnneCecilie Not sure, it would be interesting to see Carl in a relationship, but I‘m not sure she‘s the one. For me this has been such a small part of the story so I never gave it much thought @Marina_h @Butterfinger 5y

Marina_h I wonder how they could not have any idea that there was something strange about this guy, but then I think that may well be normal for men on a sports team. They are only there for the sport and not really that interested in each other. 5y
Tove_Reads @Marina_h I guess they all have something to hide? But shady people anyway. 5y
AnneCecilie And don‘t we close our eyes if something doesn‘t make sense? They never would have guessed that one of them were hiding something like this. I feel like this is often the case in real life, that family and friends close to a killer never knew anything or would have thought that about him/ her. @Marina_h 5y

Marina_h I could actually believe that. I think some religions are so secluded that something like this is likely to happen. 5y
Tove_Reads @Marina_h But the ones who left the sects. Weird that no one talks. 5y
Butterfinger Paol's brother is the first one who talks. I was so happy he wrote Rachel in that way. I was rooting for her. And, then was worried about how they would find the children. 5y
AnneCecilie I found that hard too, but I think @Marina_h makes a great point. After having experienced that the killer will kill one child, the parents do what they can to save the others. At that point the threats makes the family behave as the killer wants. @Tove_Reads Do think that anyone would believe them? The ones who left were forced to leave and inside the sect no one would believe them. And the parents and its members would protect the sect. (edited) 5y

Marina_h For the sake of entertainment - great idea! Looking at how realistic it was, I don't know but she makes me laugh as Rose as well as Yrsa 5y
Tove_Reads @Marina_h I bet both of them will be a part of the series in the future as well. 5y
Butterfinger When Carl saw the mannequin head in the apartment, I started wondering. Especially with the way Yrsa was acting. I'm within 150 pages till the end so I don't know the reason why she is acting this way. 5y
AnneCecilie I felt that the twist was a little unnecessary, but I‘ll see how this will play out in future books before a final judgment. Yrsa and Rose as twins were OK and made sense with previous comments. I never thought about future books @Tove_Reads @Marina_h 5y

Tove_Reads How do we do the whole Nordic thing? We read Follett at the beginning of the month. Only a few Binchies left, so we don‘t have to worry about the 19th anymore. 22nd is Cara Black. EadieB @Tove_Reads @Andrew65 @gradcat @Crazeedi
Just as a suggestion:
Ken Follett - around 1st of month
Jussi Adler-Olsen - around 5th of month
LibraryThing Book 1 - around 10th of month
Camilla Lackberg - around 15th of month
Maeve Binchy - around 19th of month
Cara Black - around 22th of month
LibraryThing Book 2 - around 25th of month
Lars Kepler - around 30th of month
Need to fit in George
Dates will change according to number of days in the month.
(edited) 5y
Tove_Reads @eadieb Should we do George 19th once we are done with Binchy? 5y
EadieB @Tove_Reads We may be able to fit her in as it takes me at least 2 days to read a book and we do have at least 5 days in between books. We have about 10 books a month so we can allow 3 days for each book. Easy to read 2 books at the same time during group reads such as LibraryThing and Binchy. Just have to take one month at a time and see what we can fit in when based upon schedules etc. @Andrew65 @gradcat @Crazeedi (edited) 5y
Crazeedi @EadieB what's your LT book? 5y
EadieB @Crazeedi It is a group read on LibraryThing that we do twice a month and @Andrew65 is our question person. We have been doing these readings for a few years so we have read over a hundred books. 5y

Andrew65 Must have been doing it for at least 5 or 6 years but could be longer. Moved house from Shelfari to Leafmarks to Librarything as sites shut down. @EadieB @Crazeedi New people are always welcome. (edited) 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Hopefully can keep up with the schedule but looks a good spread out of the books. 😊 @crazeedi @Tove_Reads @gradcat People are welcome to sign up to some or all Series. Certainly makes you keep reading. Got behind on two series this year and took me a while to cats home up. 😂 5y

Kimzey Have you read the other books in this series? Wondering if it's better to read them in order or if it doesn't matter. 8y
Smangela @Kimzey you could probably read them out of order - there is an underlying storyline with the main character though. I've read 1 & 2 and part of 3 :) but it isn't quite like, for example, the Stephanie Plum series where there is a recap/introduction I don't think. Im currently starting over to read them with my hubby so I can comment to confirm when I get into #2 :) 8y
