This visually and narratively stunning work continues the story of Karen Reyes, baby dyke in 1960s Chicago trying to solve the murder of Anya, her upstairs neighbor and Holocaust survivor. She also meets her first gf and finds out a lot about her brother. The intricate art is done solely in ballpoint pen! Queerness as monstrosity and the reclaiming of that are central conceits, but Ferris also interrogates grief, memory, and sibling relationships.
The art in this graphic novel is incredible! All done with ballpoint pens!! Look for the inscription on the left to see which 16th century painting it's a recreation of. The 10-year-old narrator and her brother like to go to the art gallery in Chicago and the kid draws this after seeing it.
Well, this was another whirlwind. Ferris‘ art continues to be magnificent. I think because I just read the first book I found this just as moving, if not more so in some ways. I find some of the storylines left things open for a possible Vol. 3 and I would be happy to follow more of Karen Reyes‘ story if that happens. I feel this is a set of books that will hold up to rereading- the art is so dense and immersive I‘m sure I‘d find more each time.
My Saturday night reading. I got my hold of the tagged from the library yesterday. I‘m already in the midst of 17 other books, so I decided I want to make some progress with a few of those before I start the Ferris. I‘m savoring the Wordsworth and enjoying the Wiswell, which is for my queer book club in a few weeks. This stack is an interesting combo. 📚
Volume one of this graphic novel is massive and well-known. Many have been awaiting book two, including myself. I found that Ferris‘s sophomore effort didn‘t feel as necessary and novel as the first book. That being said, it‘s still got some of the most amazing and intricate drawings in any graphic novel I‘ve read. The artwork feels like the point in this one, and the storyline just has to figure out how to match up. I‘d still read a vol 3!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Like book one, this is extremely dark and dense; and literally heavy as hell and hard to hold. The art is still incredible, but the story‘s continuation was a bit slower and less engaging than expected.
The artwork is just incredible. These two pages were unexpected and so lovely, but contextually heartbreaking.
3/5
Like with the volume one, I'm on the fence.
I liked the art and the format, some of the plotlines, but I'm having difficulties with the main character.

Worth the wait…vol. 2 continues the story of Karen Reyes who feels out of place and different from her family as well as the other residents of the Chicago neighborhood she lives in. Set against the backdrop of the political turmoil of the 60s, this is a story about history, family, survival, identity, secrets, the hunt for truth, & so much more. The art is fantastic & these books are rightfully compared to Spiegelman and Ware. Excellent.
Hit the comic store today for #NCBD and picked up the tagged book. Super excited to continue the story and spend more time with Ferris‘ exquisite art. This is a great graphic novel, one that transcends the medium, that tells a really complex, compelling story.
It‘s finally here! Preorder came early yesterday!!
I preordered this book way back when (looks like 2017, wowza) and just got a notice that my order has been cancelled. 😩 over the years I‘ve received ‘updates‘ (basically asking if I want to keep the order and stating a date about 6-8 months in the future is the new release date) - so this email is not terribly surprising. But it it is still disappointing.
I don‘t know if volume 2 is ever coming. Anyone have any info?
1. That my boyfriend is off work but he doesn‘t want to do anything but binge on Netflix, lol. 2. These new things I have seen where they have guacamole and tortilla chips in a little package, like cheese and crackers. I could live off of those things!! lol 3. The release date keeps changing and aggravating a lot of people, but I hope this comes out soon!! 4. Cool ranch flavored tortilla chips, lol. 5. Anyone!! #friyayintro @jesshowbooks ❤️❤️
I feel like I‘ve got whiplash with this book. When I first pre-ordered it had an August release date. Not too long ago I got an email stating that release was pushed back to October. Now it‘s moved up to June? I‘ll take it, but I‘m kind of expecting an ‘our mistake‘ email any minute now... 🤣
June 12th!!!! So excited for the second book!!!
Congrats @britt_brooke and what a great giveaway!! This has been on my tbr for forever! #MonstersGiveaway
So many of you loved the first volume, I wonder if you had heard about the second to come out this year...
These books have been on my hold list since I've heard of them (or read the first one and loved it)! Really looking forward to getting my hands on them!
