Jane and the Wandering Eye
Jane and the Wandering Eye: Being the Third Jane Austen Mystery | Stephanie Barron
14 posts | 14 read | 8 to read
As Christmas of 1804 approaches, Jane Austen finds herself "insupportably bored with Bath, and the littleness of a town." It is with relief that she accepts a peculiar commission from her Gentleman Rogue, Lord Harold Trowbridgeto shadow his niece, Lady Desdemona, who has fled to Bath to avoid the attentions of the unsavoury Earl of Swithin. But Jane's idle diversion turns deadly when a man is discovered stabbed to death in the Theatre Royal. Adding to the mystery is an unusual object found on the victim's bodya pendant that contains a portrait of an eye! As Jane's fascination with scandal leads her deeper into the investigation, it becomes clear that she will not uncover the truth without some dangerous playacting of her own.... From the Paperback edition.

Everyone is right - these are definitely improving! The footnotes are still bothering more often than not but I did like how Barron wove in some of the places and details from Austen‘s work. Jane is also feeling more authentic and the mysteries are getting more interesting, as well.

1/2 catch-up books for the #janeandtheexcellentreadalong during #MarchMadness

TheBookHippie I so agree -they are improving at rapid rate. 2y
Ruthiella I think too, as the books progress, I can better separate this fictional character from the historical one. For me, that bizarrely makes the books more believable to me. 2y
janeycanuck @Ruthiella Oh, that‘s a good point. I had been feeling like Jane was feeling more authentic but maybe I‘m just settling into how she writes the character… 2y

Bailedbailed

I have to be honest with myself and bail on this one. It's a pity because everyone agrees that each book is better than the previous one, but one mystery per month is becoming tedious and couldn't get into it. I have too many reading compromises and it's causing a reading slump. I'm in the middle of 10 books and have to start another one, which is crazy, so I need to clear my reading schedule.

I really enjoyed this third book. It ticked along nicely. #JaneandtheExcellentReadAlong #Pemberlittens

A huge Thank You to @Crinoline_Laphroaig for hosting.😃Answers to questions are in the comments.

Ruthiella 1. The final revelation of the murderer was good. I also enjoyed the Bath setting. 2. I loved Lady Desdemona‘s shooting down of Miss Wren “I may wonder that having a so biddable nature in your day, you failed to find a husband”. 3. My favorite character was Mr. Elliot, the sloppy yet sharp magistrate. 4. I was surprised to find 👁 portraits were a thing. 5. I learned Jane wasn‘t a fan of concerts. 6. I find eye portraits a little creepy. 2y
Ruthiella 7. If I could visit Bath, I‘d definitely want to visit the Roman baths that give it its name. 8. Random Thought-I‘ve never know anyone even named Harold! 😂 2y

#Pemberlittens Here's this month's #JaneandtheExcellentReadalong Discussion Post.

Crinoline_Laphroaig 1️⃣ How dangerous Charades can be. Eliza being Eliza, which was also my favorite quote.
2️⃣ “Sew—cook—wash—what other tasks must be onerous to a girl of spirit, Eliza?” my uncle enquired, puzzling it out.
“Visits to elderly relations?
”“No, no—it must be one syllable!”
2y
Crinoline_Laphroaig 3️⃣Favorite Character - Lord Harold because he respects Jane's Intellect. Least Favorite - Judgemental Cassandra:
"Cassandra‘s goodness may be said to verge, with advancing age, upon prudery; and however respectable my sister‘s motives in the present case, her methods recalled the schoolroom."
2y
Crinoline_Laphroaig 4️⃣ Who the murderer was. Originally read this for #JaneandtheYear2020 and apparently 2 years is about the length of time I can remember who did it.😆 (This happens for me with most Mysteries I reread. But it makes it feel like I'm reading for 1st time.) 2y

Crinoline_Laphroaig 5️⃣ Eye Potraits were definitely something new.
6️⃣ While interesting, I would find it creepy AF if some wore a potraits of my eye.
7️⃣ Start with Jane Austen Centre followed by a walk through Sydney Gardens.
8️⃣How much I love Lord Harold, when all the Harolds I've know in real life have been truly terrible people.

Ruthiella I‘ll have to come back in a few days. I‘m only on chapter 7! 😬 But I will say the plot is really ticking along, which I appreciate. The pages are turning more rapidly than with the previous two. 2y
rubyslippersreads @Crinoline_Laphroaig I‘ve never known a real-life Harold, although I‘ve always been in love with Professor Harold Hill. 😄 2y
Sparklemn I just wanted to check in and let you know that I got behind with my reading. I plan to catch up in November and be back on schedule! 🤞 2y
SarahBookInterrupted I won‘t be able to join along this time. 2y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @rubyslippersreads perhaps I need to start keeping track of 'Good' Harolds. 2y

For the first time during #janeandtheexcellentreadalong, I've actually finished the book before it was time to discuss it. ☺️ I don't think I would've kept going with this series on my own, but I like each one a little bit more, so will probably continue. Loved the setting of this one and the real life background, if not 100% all-in about all aspects.

#Pemberlittens if like Jane you are wondering:
“The likeness of an eye? This has become his particular art?”

Here are couple of links on the history of Eye Jewelry.

And this from the author. Plus other background info (without Spoilers).

#JaneandtheExcellentReadalong is off to Christmas in Bath.

And in sad news author Francine Matthews aka Stephanie Barron posted that her youngest son died. He was 24. 💔

Makes this month's Background Info particularly sad. I found a Podcast from May 2022 where she talks about her writing. And how when she started out she was only Author between School Dropoff & Pickup.

Great suggestions for aspiring writers. Link in comments. #PemberLittens

The 3rd installment of this series is set at Christmas time, but it‘s not a Christmas mystery. It‘s more of a theatre mystery as the manager of the Royal Theater in Bath is murdered at a party. Jane and her friend Harold Trowbridge are again on the case to figure out whodunnit. And what does the pendant with a picture of an eye found on the victim‘s body have to do with it? This was fun, but a fairly average mystery.

I adore this mystery series! I feel like Barron captures the spirit of Austen - her wit, her intelligence, and her independence. This is the third book in the series. A nice "spinoff" of the actual Jane and her family. #spinofflove #backtoreading

Ms.Story This sounds like a cosy autumn read! 7y
Librarybelle I think so, @Ms.Story ! 7y
batsy I love it too, and I agree! It feels so Austeny without being contrived. 7y
