Olivia and the Missing Toy
Olivia and the Missing Toy | Ian Falconer
117 posts | 76 read | 6 to read
Olivia has one toy that she loves more than anything. She feeds him, dresses him and takes him everywhere. So when he disappears, Olivia is FURIOUS! She looks under the rug, under the sofa, under the cat. She shouts at Ian and baby William, she cries, she stomps... all to no avail. Then, one dark and stormy night, Olivia hears a noise... Clutching a candelabra, she creeps bravely into her bedroom, and sees a huge menacing shadow on the wall. Who is this monster, and what's that hanging from his jaws? All is resolved peacefully in this entertaining story starring our favourite pig and her favourite toy.

I love this quote because it shows that Olivias mother loves her no matter how she acts. Even if she acts crazy and silly.

I would very much enjoy reading this book to a group of children. There is so much to relate Olivia's day with a typical day for a child. In addition, we can have a conversation about why everything Olivia touches is red. We can talk about how much of an impact Olivia has on the things around her. And then we can relate this back to the students and how the things they do or touch make an impact on the world around them too.

The illustrations make this book really interesting because everything that Olivia touches or is wearing is red, while the rest of the book is black and white. RIP, Ian Falconer. 🤍💔🖤

Ian exposed corporate malfeasance; had an identity crisis; developed a more stark, modern style; and encouraged seriousness in tandem with play through the persona of Olivia the Pig.

I think this is a super cute, fun book that would be good for younger kids and possibly even older kids! I think when reading, it would be a great opportunity when trying to teach kids about routines. I also think it would be great to read and then talk about things that each student is really good at. Using it as a morale/ self esteem booster.
