pickA delightful romp! This was a very fun, very British read. Imagine if Agatha Christie wrote romantic comedies instead of mysteries. Most fun is the main character Julia, a 40-something 'rum sort,' a good-time girl who spends the novel trying to be a good sort, a proper lady. Scrapes and screw-ups and romance ensue. I definitely plan to read more of Sharp's novels!
The title comes from the nursery rhyme "I had a little nut tree."

So mood sent me to this little lighthearted book from 1937 that I bought for the Kindle a while ago. And there's no arguing with a reading mood. 🙂

The dictionary tells me that the noun "soak" is slang for a heavy drinker in British slang.
'Garn!' is new to me: according to Merriam-Webster, it's "used interjectionally to express disbelief or ridicule" in British English.
This is the first time I've seen the archaic "must needs" (which basically means 'must necessarily') in modern prose.

pickThis was a fun read! I really warmed to Julia, the protagonist. Plus that first chapter was one of my favourites ever.
pickAusten's keen observations of social hierarchies, Wodehouse's wit and maybe a soupçon of Shirley Jacksons bite. This is "light reading" for readers who still want their brains engaged (as well as their hearts) and I found myself smiling to myself and highlighting deadpan zingers for future use.
About a third of the way in, and I'm loving it. Sharp is really funny and socially observant and...pretty naughty. It's rare to find something this incredibly smart and literate while being, really, a frolic.
Loving this book so far—it's sharp and funny and all-around lovely. I'm glad Open Road Media is bringing Sharp's work to ebook.
