It's the start of Jordan Sun's junior year at the Kensington-Blaine Boarding School for the Performing Arts. Unfortunately, she's an Alto 2, which--in the musical theatre world--is sort of like being a vulture in the wild: She has a spot in the ecosystem, but nobody's falling over themselves to express their appreciation. So it's no surprise when she gets shut out of the fall musical for the third year straight. But then the school gets a mass email: A spot has opened up in the Sharpshooters, Kensington's elite a cappella octet. Worshiped . . . revered . . . all male. Desperate to prove herself, Jordan auditions in her most convincing drag, and it turns out that Jordan Sun, Tenor 1, is exactly what the Sharps are looking for.

first post! i‘m currently reading “Noteworthy” by Riley Redgate and so far, I‘m really liking it! The plot is very interesting in terms of the characters motivations and ambitions, but I love the whole premise of the book (exploring your identity!) I think everyone goes through that phase where they question themselves, and I think it‘s super important to know that IT‘S NORMAL & OKAY!

Duet is a super strong DS9 episode, one I think of every time people say the first season is bad (it mostly isn't!) - a moving tragedy that usually has me tearing up from just thinking about it.
Tagged book could not be more different tonally, but it -is- about singing and I think Duet is pretty noteworthy.

I don‘t have a ton of tenor range but HOO BOY did I relate to Jordan‘s #altostruggle! This was very much an a cappella/performing arts boarding school She‘s The Man which was fun but I think I personally would have enjoyed it more had it been aged up to a college story. I sometimes got the minor characters in the group mixed up but the story did have some interesting things to say about gender perception even if it was often surface level.

whatsthEStorey Happy birthday!! Your card is on the way, but will be a little late. 6y
MaGoose @whatsthEStorey No problem. You don't know how happy I was to receive your present. Things have been hectic and somewhat disheartening here, including a *very* expensive car repair. 6y
whatsthEStorey Oh man! That is not a nice birthday surprise. I hope things settle down. 6y

This was a cute ya about a cappella and fitting in and finding your friends. It was also a little about gender and presentation.

This was an ok book. I was confused on whether the main character was trans or not because the author kind of left the main characters gender fluid. I really liked the diversity of the characters. I gave this 3 stars because while i liked most of the elements of this novel, the plot seemed nonexistent and not that exciting. I can't wait to read Riley Redgate's new book.

BiblioTori As a former alto turned soprano thanks to puberty, I relate so much. I‘ll have to read this. One year of middle school I went to an honors choir type thing as an alto 2, and the following year I went as a first soprano. Talk about a *major* difference in how people treated me for both of those things. 😂 6y
vkois88 👍👍👍👍 sounds cute! 6y
LaLecture @OnlyMeJustT Same 😂. Though in all my choirs people like me better as an alto as they are rarer. Everyone wants to sing soprano, wether they are actually able to or not ^^. But in musicals you‘re definitely better off as a soprano. 6y
BiblioTori @LaLecture I got into the more advanced choir my second year because I could stay on pitch as a soprano. It was such a challenge, though. 😂 But I loooooved being an alto. I still love it, sometimes. A girl I did colorguard with in high school was a tenor, and she was an incredibly rare find around here, and her voice was pretty awesome. Sopranos in musicals sometimes break microphones, though. 😂 6y

WhatDeeReads @Susannah I want to spend the evening reading it, alas it‘s my best friend‘s birthday party. I‘m expected to show up smiling. 7y
Susannah Sometimes the anticipation of getting back to the book is as good as reading it? (Hopefully the party will be fun enough that you won‘t spend too much time thinking about your book.) 😉 (edited) 7y

This was so much fun to read whilst dealing with important topics of diversity and finding one's place in life and making decisions and dealing with the consequences of dealing with those decisions.
I hardly ever read contemporary fiction but this was amazing. I could totally identify with different aspects of the main and side characters and could connect with them and there challenges they were facing.
I loved it.

On a Tuesday, I'm off singing with a community choir, and this term we're doing #Hallelujah (& nobody does it better). I must admit, the idea of Hallelujah made me 😖 (I prefer to sing songs I don't love, just in case we break them) but it's actually turning out pretty good. So, I needed a fun choir book for this prompt - and as we're the only choir I've come across with a totally mixed tenor section, this looked like the one! #junetunz @Cinfhen

Cinfhen Sounds amazing 🎵and book looks cute! Wish you can include an audio link...would love to hear your choir... 7y
rockpools @Cinfhen Conveniently, none of my spectacular performances have reached YouTube (Hallelujah!) - think the cameraperson must have gone AWOL the year I started. But this is our lot scaring a shopping centre with a flashmob: https://youtu.be/xuUGMZyMKSE 7y

I loved this. I know there are some problems, and I will go into them in my full review. But on the whole, I loved Jordan, and I LOVED Isaac, and I wanted to be friends with everyone in the Sharpshooters. This felt real. It felt like it mattered, which is all Jordan would have wanted.

SO GREAT! This has the fun a cappella competitions & team friendships from Pitch Perfect. It also has the examination of gender roles, male privilege & "girl seizing an opportunity open only to males by cross dressing" storyline from She's the Man. BUT, it also has a Chinese bi MC who challenges the norms of the privileged world she lives in. She also comes from a super poor family & it was soooo important to read this in a YA story. ❤

Cinfhen Fun cover and cute title 💕 8y
Sue I really want to read this. The author's blurb on Goodreads is just the best. 8y

Somebody recommended this book on Twitter as Pitch Perfect meets She's the Man (with a bi Chinese female MC) and I am 💯💯here for that so I immediately requested it on Netgalley. Really liking it so far! 👌🏽It comes out in the beginning of May I believe.

readinginthedark Interesting pitch...can't wait to see your review! 8y
