Space: A Novel | James A. Michener
19 posts | 6 read | 9 to read
Already a renowned chronicler of the epic events of world history, James A. Michener tackles the most ambitious subject of his career: space, the last great frontier. This astounding novel brings to life the dreams and daring of countless men and womenpeople like Stanley Mott, the engineer whose irrepressible drive for knowledge places him at the center of the American exploration effort; Norman Grant, the war hero and U.S. senator who takes his personal battle not only to a nation, but to the heavens; Dieter Kolff, a German rocket scientist who once worked for the Nazis; Randy Claggett, the astronaut who meets his destiny on a mission to the far side of the moon; and Cynthia Rhee, the reporter whose determined crusade brings their story to a breathless world. BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from James A. Michener's Hawaii. Praise for Space A master storyteller . . . Michener, by any standards, is a phenomenon. Space is one of his best books. The Wall Street Journal A novel of very high adventure . . . a sympathetic, historically sound treatment of an important human endeavor that someday could be the stuff of myth, told here with gripping effect. The New York Times Book Review Space is everything that Michener fans have come to expect. Without question, the space programs dramatic dimensions provide the stuff of great fiction.BusinessWeek Michener is eloquent in describing the actual flights into space, as well as the blazing, apocalyptic re-entry of the shuttle into earths atmosphere. The New York Times

Mehso-so

Finally finished this chunkster after 5 1/2 months. It was a real slog. I was determined to read it. I enjoyed the science parts but not so much the fiction parts. It could have easily been 200 pages less and been all the better for it. My least favorite of Michener's books I have read. 3⭐️

#ChunksterChallenge2023 @Amiable

Amiable I have a struggle with Michener, too. The books always sound good but then I find myself plodding through them. (edited) 1y
Karisimo Which others have you read? I liked Hawaii and The Covenant 1y
AmyG I read a few of his books as a young adult. Congrats that you finished! 1y

Mollyanna Michener is hit or miss for me too! I remember reading Caravans in High School and wanting to travel to the desert. Congrats on your finish! 1y
TheSpineView @Karisimo Hawaii, Alaska, Poland, Texas, Tales of the South Pacific. I would like to read Centennial ay some point. 1y
TheSpineView @Amiable I enjoyed Alaska the most of the ones I have read. I do agree with on plodding through. They are all dense and it always takes me forever to read one of his books. 1y
TheSpineView @Mollyanna I agree it is hit or miss 1y
Deblovestoread Congrats! Finishing a Michener deserves an award. Centennial is my favorite but also loved The Drifters and Chesapeake. I have several on my shelf to get to one day. 1y
TheSpineView @Deblovestoread Thanks! I've not read Centennial but I have it on my physical book shelf to read at some point. 1y

Finally starting this chunkster. It has been on my shelf the longest. At 808 pages it will take awhile. Michener can be a dense read so planning to read a few pages every day.

DogMomIrene This is the only Michener I‘ve ever read. There were definitely exciting times where I was all “wheeeee!🐎” But there were also points where I was all “whoaaaa🦥” 2y
Meshell1313 Good luck! 🙌🙌📚 2y
TheSpineView @DogMomIrene I have read 3 other Michener novel and I know what I am in for.... I think. 2y

📗 Space by James Michener
📗📗 I suspect it will be dry and will be a huge time sink.
📗📗📗 The Impossible Us and Winterlight

Bookbuyingaddict #wonderuswednesday @eggs 📖 1. The story of Edgar Sawtelle - has anyone read it ?? 2. Not sure 🤔 why just never fancied it , not known at all here in the Uk 🇬🇧 but a big Oprah book choice years ago . 3. Current reads 📖🤓 the island of missing trees 🌲 by elif shafak & the love ❤️ hypothesis both wonderful 🤩😍 (edited) 3y
EadieB @Karons1 I read The Story of Edgar Sawtelle about 2010. If you love dogs then you will like it. I enjoyed it but the ending is very sad. 3y
aa_guer2021 @EadieB it‘s on my reading list. The title appealed to me, as did the blurb. It was also a thrift store find. I do love dogs 🐶, but thank you for the warning! 3y
