5⭐️ Oblomov is an honest and kind person, but he is terribly lazy. He believes in doing nothing so that he can enjoy life. For a moment I was scared that I have this Oblomovitis in me because I, too, like to just stay at home and do nothing 😆 But nope, when it‘s rest for me, it‘s permanent lifestyle choice for Oblomov. He‘s so lazy that I want to kick his ass! Goncharov also offers his views about love, friendship, etc that I really appreciate.

Suet624 I‘m with you. 2y
batsy Oblomovitis! I love that. Need to read this, because he sounds way too relatable and I'm worried 😅 Nice review! 2y

My abandoned child 🤦🏻‍♀️ I started this novel 5 months ago and had to stop to read bookclub books, plus I got busy with work and school. Poor Oblomov. I‘m with you now❤️‍🩹

BarbaraBB He‘s such a funny character! 2y

“Don‘t come near, don‘t come near, you‘re straight from the cold street.” 😂 Said Oblomov to all his visitors 😅

"Ma ecco, già è volato il mattino, il giorno già inclina alla sera, e con esso inclinano al riposo anche le affaticate forze di Oblomov: le tempeste e le agitazioni si acquietano entro l'anima, la mente si libera dei pensieri, il sangue scorre più lento nelle vene."

Pickpick

I really enjoyed this novel, although on the surface little happens; it takes forever for Oblomov to even get up off the divan where he spends much of his time. He should be easy to dismiss, but Oblomov is such a gentle-hearted and honest person, I hoped for his success. But what is a successful life? What is its true purpose, if survival is not at stake? (A question Oblomov's peasants, the source of his income, never have a chance to ask.)

BarbaraBB I liked this one so much, unexpectedly. 5y

Mehso-so

I know I would have gotten a lot more out of this novel if able to discuss with others.

It doesn‘t feel like a whole lot happens — mainly because, due to his own ideals (and fears), Oblomov decides to spend most of his life doing not much.

I can see why it‘s considered a classic, however.

Read for #1001Books

Who can resist a novel blurbed by Leo Tolstoy (upper right)? 😉

Actually, picked this one up a while back because it‘s a #1001Books. Bookmark was inside my used copy. Say no to palm oil; it helps the orangutans.

Starting this today! 👣 🛌

DivineDiana That is quite amazing! 🤩 6y

Day 2 of #AugustIsATrip is #Russia! I have a lot of books about Russia and by Russian authors. These are a few that were readily available for me to grab before leaving for work this morning. (Trust me, I have many more 📚.) All of these books, except for Oblomov, which I‘ve read, are on my TBR. #russianhistory #russianfiction #nosuchthingastoomanybooks

Foragingfantasy I recommend reading Anna Karenina along with the audio. I enjoyed it, but wouldn‘t have finished it with out the audiobook. 6y
vkois88 I want to read more about the Romanovs... hmmmm, maybe I'll do a themed month 🤔🤔 Someday, anyway lol 6y

Reviewsbylola I love reading about the Romanovs! 6y
SharonGoforth @Foragingfantasy That‘s a great idea! I would imagine that the audio would keep the story moving, whereas I spend too much time struggling in my head with pronunciations!! 6y
SharonGoforth @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Awesome! I believe the author has a new one out - I want to read them all! 6y
SharonGoforth @vkois88 If you decide to do one, I‘m definitely in!!! 6y
SharonGoforth @Reviewsbylola I do, too! I‘ve been obsessed since I was a teenager (decades ago!). 6y
vkois88 I'll have to keep an eye out for some books, but I'll definitely let you know! 6y
SharonGoforth @vkois88 Sounds like a plan! A lot has been written about the Romanovs, so you shouldn‘t have too much trouble finding them. Used bookstores or used bookstore sites should have plenty. 6y
vkois88 That's the plan! I need to stop by a couple here in town today anyway, so I will keep an eye out 😊 6y

Well the handle is relatively self explanatory, I identified way to much with Oblomov when I read this book; his lethargy, his anxiety, his idealism in a very practical world. I chose to use the handle to remind me that I should try not to be Oblomov. It is at times an ongoing battle. And 26? Well simply it is my birthday.

The story of Oblomow, a thoroughly good man who is not able to fulfill any of his dreams. Is it satire? I don't know, I did like and pitied Oblomow. He and Olga and the life they could have led. But it wasn't meant to be because of Oblomowism, as his good friend Stolz calls it. A beautiful read! #1001books

If you haven't yet met Oblomov, most likely you'll find him in bed where he has vowed to live out the torpor of his life, and transact all business from a state of repose. Way to have have a midlife crisis! #readinginbed #bookswithapropername

Books_Wine_Repeat Sounds like he's living the dream. 😛 8y
LeahBergen I haven't read this (but I confess to having a bit of his "astonishing lethargy" at times!) Stacked! 8y

When you don't know what you're living for, you don't care how you live from one day to the next. You're happy the day has passed and the night has come, and in your sleep you bury the tedious question of what you lived for that day and what you're going to live for tomorrow.

A close, daily intimacy between two people has to be paid for: it requires a great deal of experience of life, logic, and warmth of heart on both sides to enjoy each other‘s good qualities without being irritated by each other‘s shortcomings and blaming each other for them.

Pickpick

A story in which the hero spends the first 50+ pages convincing himself to get out of bed. Oblomov is often thought of as the portrait of a lazy man, but for me, he is a model for an man suffering from anxiety- smart, kind, moral but in many ways unsuited for the world in which he finds himself.

Oblomov26 To finish- the book follows Oblomov when during a period in his life when he is presented a chance to throw of his ennui and become a functioning member of society? Will he? And if so will this make him a happier better person? 8y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled This sounds like something I would love. Investigating this now! 8y
