pickI‘ve read Augusten Burroughs other memoirs “running with scissors” & “ wolf at the table”. I enjoy his candid writing style and dark humor. This is a collection of stories from his childhood. It will keep you laughing- in a completely horrified way.
pick⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was Burroughs‘s second essay collection and is noticeably better than Magical Thinking. I think it‘s due largely to him (admittedly) combining some characters and performing slight story tweaks for better flow. Essayists often do this and I‘m good with it. I‘ve very much enjoyed revisiting his essays. It‘s been a long time, and he‘s one of my favorite storytellers; a little pompous, but self-deprecating enough to be endearing.
Listening to this one on audio and I was blown away by the amount of Nicorette gum Augusten chews. 3 boxes a week, or 72 pieces PER DAY.
“There‘s orange, which tastes like Bayer aspirin and mercury—it‘s like a dessert gum. Then there‘s mint, that has a soft, passive, slightly refreshing flavor. That would be good for preschoolers. And [my favorite] original chemical flavor. It‘s the taste of DuPont.”
I‘m now an audiobook convert, so when I‘m alone in my car it‘s all audiobooks, all the time, but when my kids are in the car . . . not so much. They prefer to play DJ.
