Team of Teams
Team of Teams: New Rules of Engagement for a Complex World | General Stanley McChrystal, Tantum Collins, David Silverman, Chris Fussell
What if you could combine the agility, adaptability, and cohesion of a small team with the power and resources of a giant organization? THE OLD RULES NO LONGER APPLY . . . When General Stanley McChrystal took command of the Joint Special Operations Task Force in 2004, he quickly realized that conventional military tactics were failing. Al Qaeda in Iraq was a decentralized network that could move quickly, strike ruthlessly, then seemingly vanish into the local population. The allied forces had a huge advantage in numbers, equipment, and trainingbut none of that seemed to matter. TEACHING A LEVIATHAN TO IMPROVISE Its no secret that in any field, small teams have many advantagesthey can respond quickly, communicate freely, and make decisions without layers of bureaucracy. But organizations taking on really big challenges cant fit in a garage. They need management practices that can scale to thousands of people. General McChrystal led a hierarchical, highly disciplined machine of thousands of men and women. But to defeat Al Qaeda in Iraq, his Task Force would have to acquire the enemys speed and flexibility. Was there a way to combine the power of the worlds mightiest military with the agility of the worlds most fearsome terrorist network? If so, could the same principles apply in civilian organizations? A NEW APPROACH FOR A NEW WORLD McChrystal and his colleagues discarded a century of conventional wisdom and remade the Task Force, in the midst of a grueling war, into something new: a network that combined extremely transparent communication with decentralized decision-making authority. The walls between silos were torn down. Leaders looked at the best practices of the smallest units and found ways to extend them to thousands of people on three continents, using technology to establish a oneness that would have been impossible even a decade earlier. The Task Force became a team of teamsfaster, flatter, more flexibleand beat back Al Qaeda. BEYOND THE BATTLEFIELD In this powerful book, McChrystal and his colleagues show how the challenges they faced in Iraq can be relevant to countless businesses, nonprofits, and other organizations. The world is changing faster than ever, and the smartest response for those in charge is to give small groups the freedom to experiment while driving everyone to share what they learn across the entire organization. As the authors argue through compelling examples, the team of teams strategy has worked everywhere from hospital emergency rooms to NASA. It has the potential to transform organizations large and small. From the Hardcover edition.

I can't sleep this morning, so it seems like the perfect time to get started on this book for work. I've been putting it off since I'm not a fan of business books, but the dev group at the startup where I work is getting ready to split into teams. As this book is influencing the structure and method of the reorganization, we've all been encouraged to read it. So it's time for me to dive in.

My current reading status/progress across all the formats I'm using. A year ago I rarely read more than book at a time, never listened to audiobooks and rarely read an e-book. So much has changed. I'm pretty sure Litsy had something to do with this!

Audio (Audibe phone app) - Murder on the Orient Express
Kindle (digital library loan) - Someone Else's Love Story
Hardback - The Course of Love
Paperback - Team of Teams

PurpleyPumpkin I'm the same. It's amazing how much can change in a year!👌🏽 7y
JazzFeathers I need to read Murder of the Orient Express to. Beforevthe film comes out! 7y
SaraFair I jumped in three years ago like you. It is fun to look back and see how your whole world has changed because of the explosion of books. I have one going in almost every room (and the car)- 7y

NF Business Audio An interesting book on how to better manage our complex and complicated world. definitely not a precise how to but a good overview of how it works when implemented correctly and how horribly wrong it can go when not. I thought the examples given were solid and there was a lot of room for discussion, implementation and adapting one's own behavior. will have to purchase. +

While reading Team of Teams and the author, General Stanley McChrystal, compares two very different events, the ditching of US Airways Flight 1549 and the hijacking of Maersk Alabama. Guess what I realized? Both these events have been made into movies with Tom Hanks as the lead... Sully and Captain Phillips!

The 3rd most-cited influential book in 2016 by the world's most influential minds across industries was this book. I really, really want to read this! Former Joint Chiefs head, he turned the War on Terror around--the WH wasn't exactly doing things right--and crushed Al Qaeda & the Taliban by realizing the the field of war changed. He found other industries changed in the same way too--from hospitals to charities to NASA. #BestBookRead #ReadToLead
