Song and Dance Man
Song and Dance Man | Karen Ackerman
24 posts | 15 read | 1 to read
Illus. in full color. "In this affectionate story, three children follow their grandfather up to the attic, where he pulls out his old bowler hat, gold-tipped cane, and his tap shoes. Grandpa once danced on the vaudeville stage, and as he glides across the floor, the children can see what it was like to be a song and dance man. Gammell captures all the story's inherent joie de vivre with color pencil renderings that leap off the pages. Bespectacled, enthusiastic Grandpa clearly exudes the message that you're only as old as you feel, but the children respond--as will readers--to the nostalgia of the moment. Utterly original."--(starred) Booklist.

This is a story about and old man who loves to sing and dance. In his youth, he was spritely and able to move and dance easily but not that he is older he struggles to move. His grandchildren love watching him sing and dance and for a moment they see him as a young man again.

This book would be great for a history lesson about how things have changed as the years have gone by. Every generation is different and it would be fun to explore the similarities and differences.

I would use this in a classroom, beucase some of my students live with all differnt people. But I would also use it in a way showing the love of story telling and the different ways that could happen, within a history lesson, I would start off with pictographs and how folk sotryeis were made and the value of listening to stories from others.

Adodd1 ESOL strategy number 1 is perfect for an RA. Encouraging our students to ask questions can lead to a better learning experience for them, and allow them to have full comprehension of text. 4y
DrSpalding Alyson is correct that your English learner strategy aligns nicely with effective read aloud skills. Your resource is excellent and reaffirms what you learned in our course. Read aloud to children daily! 4y

Song and Dance Man written by Karen Ackerman and illustrated by Stephen Gammell is another Caldecott Award winning RF book. This book is about a grandpa who tells stories about the time of his life when he would dance on stage. He even showed the kids all his old shoes which makes him feel alive again. An UDL strategy would be 8.3 to foster collaboration and community.

AlyssaB An ESOL strategy is 22 to give enough wait time for second language learners to respond to questions. A resource would be https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/song-and-dance.... I think a great activity would be to allow kids to get fun and creative and dance along to what music you play. #UCFLAE3414F19 5y
DrSpalding Are you sure this is realistic fiction? For some reason I thought this was a true story/biography about this individual. Excellent resource and of course you would want to have students up and moving with total physical response! 5y

A Caldecott Winning book, and rightfully so(pub.1988). This book had great story line of some nostalgia story telling. Which seems to be something that most kids can experience whether it be with family, friends, or guardians. Illustrations are bright and colorful. This story makes me think about my family telling me stories and how much fun it is to hear them.

I like this page of the book because it shows a really good message! The grandpa is not sad that his glory days are over because he gets to share the experience with his grandkids now. I think it‘s a good message for kids that just because something ends doesn‘t mean it is over

Song and Dance Man written by Karen Ackerman illustrated by Stephen Gammell is a fiction picture book that won a gold Caldecott honor. DeannaP https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/song-and-dance... An ESOL strategy to go with this activity would be to “promote cooperation” since they will be putting on a performance together. An E.D strategy to go with this lesson would be to “optimize individual choice and autonomy” by allowing them to pick their groups and pick which sound they would like to present. 5y
DawnS This sounds like such a fun book and the resource would really get our students excited. I like the social study cross curriculum options on the website you included too! What an awesome idea to have this lead into interviewing an older family member about past memories. 5y
DrSpalding I love the idea of a cross curricular activity. Wonderful book selection of an award-winning book. 5y

A fun loving grandpa who dances in the attic, who says you can‘t be active when you get older? This grandpa is all about fun and dance and that‘s the message he tries to send to his grandchildren.

#OctoberXFiles Day 3: The song and dance man can definitely be considered a #BoogieMan as he loves to twist and shout. I took a screenshot of Fats‘ review on our website to highlight the vibrant nature of this grandfather who loves to boogie and dance. This book received the Caldecott Medal in 1989.
