Beneath the Surface: An Inspector Tom Reynolds Mystery (2) | Jo Spain
2 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
From top-ten Irish bestselling author Jo Spain comes the second novel in the Inspector Tom Reynolds series Did I know it would come to this? That I was playing Russian Roulette? I would give anything to turn back time and to be with my girls. There is no shot at redemption. I am going to die. The gun is in my eye-line as the second bullet is fired. That's the one that kills me. Late at night, two powerful men meet in a secret location to discuss a long nurtured plan about to come to fruition. One is desperate to know there is nothing standing in their way - the other assures him everything is taken care of. Hours later, a high-ranking government official called Ryan Finnegan is brutally slain in the most secure building in Ireland - Leinster House, the seat of parliament. Inspector Tom Reynolds and his team are called in to uncover the truth behind the murder. At first, all the evidence hints at a politically motivated crime, until a surprise discovery takes the investigation in a dramatically different direction. Suddenly the motive for murder has got a lot more personal. . . but who benefits the most from Ryan's death?

jlhammar Fun, glad the first one was good enough to continue! Can‘t wait to read more With Our Blessing over the weekend. 2y
jlhammar @Suet624 In addition to the #NunLitQuarterly reads, I am reading one per month, which I‘ve invited others to read along as time and interest allow for #NunLit extra credit. The first in this mystery series is our March read and centers around the Magdalene Laundries. 2y
kspenmoll @Suet624 As you by now know, this book was a 2nd in the series. No nuns in this one! The whole premise of #nunlit sounded like fun to me. I went thru Catholic schools, in HS nuns were flinging off their habits & reinventing their lives. Plus, as you know,I consider myself spiritual, so enjoy reading an eclectic range of books regarding that subject😀 (edited) 2y
Suet624 I am trying the NunLit group too although I‘m new to it so trying to figure out which books to read next. 2y

Mehso-so

The second in Jo Spain's TOM REYNOLDS SERIES is an okay crime thriller that looks at the effects of Ireland's energy policy and politics in general on the forgotten coastal communities but the reveal relies on crucial information being hidden until the final chapters and there's a soap opera element to the story (notably the family set up of some of the characters) that was a bit too melodramatic for my tastes.
