'I need your help, Detective. Fire or water?' Detective Robert Hunter of the LAPD's Homicide Special Section receives an anonymous call asking him to go to a specific web address - a private broadcast. Hunter logs on and a show devised for his eyes only immediately begins. But the caller doesn't want Detective Hunter to just watch, he wants him to participate, and refusal is simply not an option. Forced to make a sickening choice, Hunter must sit and watch as an unidentified victim is tortured and murdered live over the Internet. The LAPD, together with the FBI, use everything at their disposal to electronically trace the transmission down, but this killer is no amateur, and he has covered his tracks from start to finish. And before Hunter and his partner Garcia are even able to get their investigation going, Hunter receives a new phone call. A new website address. A new victim. But this time the killer has upgraded his game into a live murder reality show, where anyonecan cast the deciding vote. #UnpopularOpinion This one was just OK for me. I felt like I was rereading so, it was easy to set aside & overlook for another book😅 I did like the tension buildup at the end though.

All that being said, I do very much enjoy this series & have the next instalments already in my library😏📚

TheSpineView Great job! 1mo
CoverToCoverGirl The title was more intense than the actual story.. bummer! 1mo

Finally! I finished this book. It‘s been so difficult for me to read physical books the last year or so. Migraines and fibromyalgia are kicking my butt. Thankfully the next book is an audiobook. This book wasn‘t as gory as most but creepy nonetheless. I can‘t recommend these books enough. Hunter and Garcia are great characters. #SeriesLove2023 @Andrew65 @TheSpineView

TheSpineView Hate to hear you have been unwell and it is affecting your reading. Well done! 2y
deeannloso @TheSpineView Thank you! 😊❤️ 2y
Andrew65 Totally agree with your views on this series, a favourite of mine. Sorry to hear about your struggles. I‘ve been struggling with Crohn‘s Disease over the past year and sometimes affects my reading and posting due to the pains. Can be difficult to motivate yourself on those occasions or sit and read. 2y
deeannloso @Andrew65 Sorry to hear you suffer with pain as well. I figure that if it takes me a while to finish a physical book, so be it. Take care! 😊 2y

Book 5 of the Robert Hunter series. I love this series. Great characters. Interesting murder murder mysteries that leave you on the edge of your seat. Real page turners. My only quibble—this one had too much gore! Carter‘s books are always a bit violent…but this was too much for me. Nevertheless, I definitely plan to read the next one!

Tove_Reads @EadieB @eanderson Ended up reading One by One, another book I shouldn‘t have started due to work interrupting my reading, and now I‘ve started Dead Ground, and work is acting up again, thinking it‘s more important than reading. So annoying!!! We readers are so misunderstood in this society!!! 3y

Another brilliantly creepy story from the disturbed mind of Chris Carter. I couldn‘t put it down and read far later than I intended each night. This Robert Hunter series just improves with each new installment and I can‘t recommend them highly enough.

Amazing! A serial killer has the internet vote on how the victims die! Chris Carter, the author, is a brilliant, evil man and I will read anything he writes!
WARNING: Not for the faint of heart or squeamish.

FantasyChick I love everything about how this sounds! 4y
Booknerd2 @FantasyChick It‘s a series, though they don‘t necessarily have to be read in order. Each and every one has been amazing. I sometimes worry about myself. 🤔 4y
FantasyChick Oooh I love a good series too! Don't worry about yourself...it's perfectly normal to love twisty, intense, murdery goodness....right? 😂 4y
Booknerd2 @FantasyChick Good to know someone else gets it! 😳 4y

It‘s a tad gruesome, but I enjoyed this thriller. I like Hunter‘s taste in single malt whisky, but not his tendency to drop an ice cube in it - just a drop or two of room temperature water, please!

A serial killer is broadcasting his murders on the internet, after getting viewers to decide the form of execution. Not a book for the faint-hearted (the deaths are described in some detail) but a good read for fans of crime novels. The underlying hint on how the internet and reality TV has sanitised us is also interesting.

Thought I was struggling to read because of the odd situation we are all in at the moment. Turns out it was the books, not me. Been getting stuck into this one in my spare time.

I managed to finish this before falling asleep last night. I was awake at 3:30 yesterday morning so it was hard to stay awake after 8-9pm to finish it but I did. I'm glad I did. Too good to put down. I did pass out right after though 😂

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Booknerd2 I‘m reading The Crucifix Killer and really enjoying it!!! 6y

Next up is the last Chris carter book before I purchase his new one. DISCOVERY is stamped across this post because I only discovered his books late last year and I made it my goal to read them all! Only one to go. If you love a good grizzly crime novel, this is DEFINITELY for you. Love how he writes, his descriptions, gore, crime, baddies and lastly detective Robert Hunter. 👍🏻👍🏻

Started One By One tonight as part of a Group Read. This is book 5 in the excellent Robert Hunter Series set in LA. I thoroughly recommend it, although you do have to like a bit of gritty crime. These books always start off with a bang, and this one was no exception. So fast paced too. Check them out!

Thank you @Leniverse for the #secretsantagoespostal box! I got back really late last night and was delighted to find the parcel in the porch. Looking forward to reading every single book 😁

Leniverse Hah, the tracking info said you had signed for it. The delivery people are cheating. 😂 But I'm glad they didn't return it to central. Sorry about the lack of hashtags on the packaging. At least I remembered to sign the card. 😅 7y
