The Boys from Brazil: A Novel
The Boys from Brazil: A Novel | Ira Levin
17 posts | 33 read | 25 to read
The classic thriller of Dr. Josef Mengele's nightmarish plot to restore the Third Reich. Alive and hiding in South America, the fiendish Nazi Dr. Josef Mengele gathers a group of former colleagues for a horrifying projectthe creation of the Fourth Reich. Barry Kohler, a young investigative journalist, gets wind of the project and informs famed Nazi hunter Ezra Lieberman, but before he can relay the evidence, Kohler is killed. Thus Ira Levin opens one of the strangest and most masterful novels of his career. Why has Mengele marked a number of harmless aging men for murder? What is the hidden link that binds them? What interest can they possibly hold for their killers: six former SS men dispatched from South America by the most wanted Nazi still alive, the notorious Angel of Death? One man alone must answer these questions and stop the killingsLieberman, himself aging and thought by some to be losing his grip on reality. At the heart of The Boys from Brazil lies a frightening contemporary nightmare, chilling and all too possible.

10-15-21: My 101st finished book of 2021! Holy crap-this book was good! Ira Levin, author of Rosemary‘s Baby, delivers a chilling book about the possibility of a second coming of Hitler through the use of children! I can‘t wait to find this movie. Riveting from start to finish. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 👍🏼📖#️⃣1️⃣0️⃣1️⃣

Here Levin has given us another far-fetched plot he makes feel plausible. From hiding in Brazil the vile Dr Mengele has a plan to ensure the rise of a new Aryan faction. He sends a team of 6 killers thru-out the world to murder 94 ordinary 65 year old men. It takes our hero, and the reader, half the book to find out why these men were targeted then the race is on to foil the plot. A little dated but well done. The last chapter is chilling.

It's my last week of work- from- home 😭 so I took advantage of a few minutes of backyard reading 😊

Cathythoughts I have this on kindle ... I loved his other books. Look forward to your thoughts 5y
bookandbedandtea @Cathythoughts This is only my 2nd book by him (the other is Stepford Wives) and I loved them both. Both so impossibly plausible and ending on disturbing notes. I'll read more by him. 5y
Cathythoughts My favorite so far is 5y
bookandbedandtea @Cathythoughts I don't have that one but I'll put if on the list. I think he's going to end up being one of my favorite authors! 5y

Thank you so much to my wonderful friend @BarbaraBB who gifted this book to me. Written in 1972, in a time before cell phones, personal computers and other modern means of communication a rather old fashioned and sinister thriller. In similar bizarro vein of Stepford Wives, Levin imagines a plot to reinstate the Third Reich to world dominance. I quite enjoyed this #GenreBusting read. I‘d like to see the film- bet it‘s super kitschy!!!!

TrishB Not read the book - think I‘ve sen the film 😁 6y
vivastory I really enjoyed this one, especially as you mentioned the pre-digital investigative methods involved 6y

I‘ve only read Rosemary‘s Baby and watched The Stepford Wives‘ adaptation. Have not read this, a story about a Nazi-hunter's pursuit of Dr Josef Mengele (the German SS officer and physician who earned the epithet "Angel of Death" from his gruesome medical experiments in Auschwitz). Seems like a gripping read and watch.

I have gotten really burned out by WWII/ Nazi novels lately, so I almost didn't read this. I am truly glad I did, because this was I interesting and fast paced and a little scary.
