Bed-Stuy Is Burning
Bed-Stuy Is Burning: A Novel | Brian Platzer
10 posts | 7 read | 24 to read
Do the Right Thing meets The Bonfire of the Vanities, in this thrilling debut novel about marriage, gentrification, parenthood, race, and the dangerous bargains we make with ourselves (Ann Packer, New York Times bestselling author) set over the course of one cataclysmic day when riots erupt in a rapidly gentrifying Brooklyn neighborhood. Aaron, a disgraced rabbi turned Wall Street banker, and Amelia, his journalist girlfriend, live with their newborn in Bedford-Stuyvesant, one of the most dynamic and historically volatile neighborhoods in New York City. The infusion of upwardly mobile professionals into Bed-Stuys historic brownstones belies the tension simmering on the streets below. But after a cop shoots a boy in a nearby park, conflict escalates to riotingwith Aaron and his family at its center. Pulled into the riots vortex are Antoinette, devout nanny to Aaron and Amelias son; Jupiter, the single father who lives on their block with his son, Derek; Daniel, Aarons unhinged tenant in their basement unit; and Sara, a smart local girl, broiling with confusion and rage. As the day unfolds, these diverse characters are forced to reckon with who they are and what truly matters to them. With the mordant wit of Franzen, the dazzling smarts of Roth, and the compassion of Tolstoy (Rafael Yglesias, author of A Happy Marriage), Platzer conjures a sharp-eyed, fast-paced, and empathetically rendered narrative about a changing neighborhood and its residents, as they struggle to raise children, establish careers, and find love, fulfillment, and meaning. Bed-Stuy Is Burning offers a window into an array of complex lives and deftly wrestles with the most pressing issues of our time with unflinching focus, wisdom, and hope.

On the edge between a so so and a pick. I liked the premise a lot.. and I liked the ending.. once the story got going it was a fast read. But I did have a really hard time understanding most of the characters‘ motivations. They didn‘t seem like things real people would do.

It's been a completely unexpected great bookish day! I finished a wonderful book, went to B&N just to see if they had Confederates in the Attic (they did!) and I picked up Stamped from the Beginning which sounds awesome. Then I went to pick up the tagged book from the library which I had on hold and have been waiting for and I walked right into a library sale! #bookhaul Now I get to shelve all these! Wild Friday night here 🤗

mjdowens That is a great book haul👏👏 7y
brennahawleycraig Confederates in the attic is one of my very favorite nonfiction reads! 7y
britt_brooke Nice haul! I read The Liars' Club recently. So good! 7y

nabilareads Nice book haul!!! 7y
Tamra I've been ever so slowly working my way thru Stamped - it's densely packed with history. 👍🏾 I saw an I interview with the author and it was fascinating. (edited) 7y
ApoptyGina69 Oooo I've read a bunch of those! Great picks. You've got a lot to look forward to! 7y
My_novel_obsession @mjdowens @brennahawleycraig @britt_brooke @nabilareads @Tamra @ApoptyGina69 Thanks guys. I have wanted Confederates in the Attic and Liar's club for awhile and can't wait to get to them. Tamra, I had never heard of Stamped before I saw it today. It really does look fascinating. 7y

With such a powerful subject comes great responsibility (and disappointment): a forced, disjointed writing style presented in poor taste ("He was Indian. Dot not feather.") and a jerk main character. The upper class tribulations were superficial- more backstory/inner thoughts from other Bed-Stuy residents is preferred. Other characters were merely glazed over.

Wholly unsupported by personal experiences of the author crucial for a heavy theme.

GlassAsDiamonds "Dot not feather"???? Sheeeeesh. ??‍♀️??‍♀️??‍♀️ 7y
mrozzz @GlassAsDiamonds yes... I didn't even get it at first. 7y
Ashley_Nicoletto I have this checked out from the library. Ughh. Considering not even starting it. My TBR is so long and it sounds like it's potentially not worth the read. 7y

mrozzz @Ashley_Nicoletto I stuck it out because if I'm gonna hate a book I have to know it doesn't get better in the end. It didn't. Let me add that the author went out of his way to mention how the female main character laughed when the second tower fell on 9/11. No further explanation. The whole thing is just annoying with how self-righteous the white couple is instead of being active listeners to the grievances of the neighborhood. Skip it. 7y
MicheleinPhilly OH NO! 😩 7y
mrozzz @MicheleinPhilly I'm hoping I wasn't just in a bad mood to read this but I really felt like most of this was very insensitive and shallow 7y

Out on Long Island (just further east than the setting of this book) listening to my friends play a backyard summer show.

This is my view for the evening. Yes that's wine in a can. 💁🏼

BekahPat I am jealous! Looks like an absolutely fantastic evening. 7y
mrozzz @BekahPat if the bugs weren't biting me it would be perfect! Lol still fun 😁 7y
Crystalblu I've been loving canned wine! 7y
mrozzz @Crystalblu what great innovation!!! 7y
Crystalblu As a wine buyer that caters to people going to the river having good wine, finally, being put in cans is so rad! 7y

Started today; strange so far.

Interesting take on faith as the main character struggles with gambling and is forced out of the synagogue but his wavering beliefs seem to match.

swishandflick I live in Bed-Stuy, I don't think I could take it 🙈 7y
mrozzz @swishandflick maybeeeeee... it's full of current events (12-year-old is shot by police) interested to see where this goes. 7y
mrozzz @swishandflick you're right, maybe skip this one. It's a veryyyy intense read and too close to home (literally). 7y

#TBRtemptation post 4! #PhillyMeetUp edition! A @micheleinphilly Pick ! Just released. Great cover, right ?? It's about everything you're not supposed to discuss: race, religion, class, politics. Set over the course of 1 day when riots erupt in the rapidly gentrifying Bed-Stuy neighborhood. Think "Bonfire of the Vanities". Think Franzen, Roth, & Tolstoy, rolled into one! #blameLitsy #blameMrBook ?

DivineDiana Thank you @MrBook @MicheleinPhilly Never heard of this one! Lived in Bed Sty while I was in college. Stacked! 7y
MicheleinPhilly @DivineDiana This was very much a "judged by its cover" pick! But the synopsis sounds fantastic too! ?? 7y
Nu20 Ugh. I just let this expire on Overdrive. Now I'm at the back of the queue. 7y
Cinfhen Nice choice @MicheleinPhilly I'll be awaiting your review 7y

I couldn't go to a bookstore and not buy anything! #PhillyMeetUp #BookHaul

MicheleinPhilly @Librarybelle I'm amazed I got out of there with only 5 books! 7y
Librarybelle I showed incredible restraint only buying 3 books, @MicheleinPhilly ! 7y
See All 9 Comments
MicheleinPhilly @Librarybelle Technically I only bought 4. The 5th was my book exchange loot. But I totally had to use the "I gave away 4 books so really I only came home with 1!" excuse when I got home. ? 7y
Librarybelle Yes, @MicheleinPhilly . I came home with 4 books total and felt the weight by the time I got off the train. And, that's a perfect excuse! 7y
LauraBeth 👏👏 7y
LeahBergen Bargain books don't count (is my excuse). 😉 (edited) 7y
StacksNShelves I got Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore too! 7y

Standing room only at Greenlight Bookstore for a discussion with Brian Platzer to celebrate the launch of his EXCELLENT and timely debut novel exploring the tensions between white and black families after an African American boy is killed by the police in a rapidly gentrifying neighborhood of Brooklyn.

#debut #brooklyn #blacklivesmatter

BarbaraTheBibliophage This is definitely on my must-read (and soon!) list. 7y
LitFaced @BarbaraTheBibliophage Brian is a wonderful writer, and this book really gets at the heart of racial tensions between neighbors in America today. Definitely recommend! 7y

Stunning debut novel! Not only is it incredibly relevant but it accurately depicts the climate and culture of unrest in many of our neighborhoods. It details a single day when a shooting erupts into chaos, dragging a diverse set of neighbors into its vortex. Their lives are forever changed. Platzer understands that nothing is "clean or easy or perfectly comprehensible...."⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

MicheleinPhilly July???? 😫 8y
Alfoster @MicheleinPhilly I got it through NetGalley. You have that? 8y
MicheleinPhilly No. I have MORE than enough books to keep me busy without adding that into the mix. ☺ 8y
Alfoster @MicheleinPhilly I get it! (But these are FREE!😍)! 8y
Zelma @MicheleinPhilly this is exactly why I don't do NetGalley either. I signed up a few years when I was actually reading for my library's collection development, but realized that it just created too many options and that there are just too many damn books! 😂 I prefer reading blurbs and using publisher catalogs for work instead. 8y
