The Conquest of Gaul
The Conquest of Gaul | Julius Caesar
22 posts | 13 read | 4 to read
The enemy were overpowered and took to flight. The Romans pursued as far as their strength enabled them to run' Between 58 and 50 BC Julius Caesar conquered most of the area now covered by France, Belgium and Switzerland, and invaded Britain twice, and The Conquest of Gaul is his record of these campaigns. Caesars narrative offers insights into his military strategy and paints a fascinating picture of his encounters with the inhabitants of Gaul and Britain, as well as lively portraits of the rebel leader Vercingetorix and other Gallic chieftains. The Conquest of Gaulcan also be read as a piece of political propaganda, as Caesar sets down his version of events for the Roman public, knowing he faces civil war on his return to Rome. Revised and updated by Jane Gardner, S. A. Handfords translation brings Caesars lucid and exciting account to life for modern readers. This volume includes a glossary of persons and places, maps, appendices and suggestions for further reading.

A surprisingly engaging read! A little dry for me in description of the military operations, but personal as to the individuals involved. It was also just one d—— thing after another for Caesar and the Romans. But for the most part, you knew Caesar would prevail, just how would he make it happen.

Side note - Ariovistus was a proper villain - his arguments back to Caesar were “oh snap”. 🤣 (I believe he appears in issue 4 of serial reader)

Rewarding read. My inner ancient history geek loved every chapter of it. Combined with the amazing Caesar‘s Gallic wars it is really entertaining. This was my ancient classic of 2020

Rewarding read. My inner ancient history geek loved every chapter of it. Combined with the amazing Caesar‘s Gallic wars it is really entertaining. My poor, battered copy went through a lot. Rain. Forgotten in the car during a really cold night. Dropped in the snow. Compressed inside my work bag, cover got crushed. 🐈 pushed and spilled a glass of water next to it on the dining table rendering it water stained beyond repair. #classics

I finished a problematic ARC, started the next one. I only have 2 left in my current ARC pile. I still have 3 more from months ago that probably won't be read in the near future. Read the next Maigret on my list. Both my classic text and #booked2020 books stayed frozen. A so-so week in the quality of reading.

Book 7 is all about Vercingetorix and the last book attributed to Caesar. The last book, book 8 is by one of his friends.

My son and husband made a very puzzling discovery yesterday. If you run "alea jacta es" in Google translate into French, you get something really, immensely wrong. It should read either "le sort est jeté" or "les dés sont jetés" if you prefer the contextual translation. There is no matrix and it ain't sunk. In English, the translation works. ???

"No western German claims to have reached its [the Hercynian Forest's] eastern extremity, even after traveling for 2 months, or to have heard where it ends. The forest is known to contain many kinds of animals not seen elsewhere [...] There is an ox shaped like a deer, with a single horn in the middle of its forehead [...] and at the top branches out wildly like a man's hand or a tree."

As a student, I had the best time with J. Caesar's memoirs!

LeahBergen This Caesar is so hot that he has light-reflecting nipples. 8y

Recently stacked and currently reading. Polar opposites or opposites attract. Roman history and contemporary hockey romance, bio picks and hard science-fiction. #stacked #seasonsreadings2016 #lastbookstacked

CocoReads I'm all over the place in reading myself. Although not so much non fiction. But like romance (love those hockey ones) to literary fiction. I usually meander through a sci fi or fantasy or two, some mysteries, at least a couple nonfictions (mostly memoirs). Well, you get the drift 8y
writerlibrarian @CocoReads I need my dose of romance monthly. I usually pick one or two non fiction to read in between fiction. Right now it's Roman history but it could have easily been art history. I'm a librarian, i just can't resist non fiction 8y
