Exquisite Corpse
Exquisite Corpse | Poppy Z. Brite
A terrifying novel of love and slaughter set in London and New Orleans. To serial killer Andrew Compton, murder is an art, the most intimate art. After feigning his own death to escape from a life sentence in prison, he makes his way to America with the intention of bringing his art to new heights. Tortured by his own perverse desires, he inadvertently joins forces with Jay, a dissolute playboy. They set their sights on a young Vietnamese-American runaway, who they deem to be the perfect victim. Moving from the grimy streets of London's Piccadilly Circus to the decadences of New Orleans' French Quarter, Poppy Z. Brite dissects the landscape of torture and invites us into the mind of a serial killer in this riveting, unforgettable masterpiece of horror.

For this #hauntedshelf rec I saw the category ‘dark‘ I was thinking what‘s the darkest book I‘ve read. This is some quite extreme horror, needing trigger warnings for absolutely everything, but thr writing was so oddly lyrical and it‘s such an individual book about a relationship I‘ll probably never see the likes of in print again.

So, this book. It‘s a very interesting book. I give 3 stars, only because while the story was interesting and I did find myself enjoying most of it. It kind of dragged at times, I also just wish some of the characters weren‘t added in just for semi important dialogue. Over all the scenes were gruesome and the story was for sure a story. I would recommend reading only if you have a strong stomach to handle the nature of this book.

A recent op shop find and reread after 15 years. Very gory, lots of gay sex, necrophilia, the French quarter of New Orleans, drugs. What‘s not to like for a young goth? I‘d recently tried re-reading Lost Souls and found that hard to get into, like it was trying too hard to be super goth, but with this one it wasn‘t as cheesy as I‘d thought it‘d be and more enjoyable. By the closing chapters I was looking forward to it being over though.

A horrible thing to read but the writing was so eerily beautiful it made this a bizarre, disturbing pick. Less ‘horror‘ and more tragic, still, melancholy, grotesque. The prose here was incredible even though the things being described are things I probably never need to see on paper again.

So, so many triggers present here so please look them up if you‘re taking this as a recommendation!

Spending my lunch break in a coffee shop on my way to visit an art school for work - quite a nice work day! I‘ve discovered that Pret only gives you the Christmas cups if you get a Christmas drink though and that will be my villain origin story. Where are the festive cups for the plain black coffee drinkers??

Adventures_of_a_French_Reader I loved this book! Especially how she set the background scene. 3y

To say I enjoyed this book would make me question myself but I have to admit I was into it. It's gory, disturbing and has too many trrigger warnings to count but it was something to read. If you're looking for a plotless story about two cannibalistic, serial killer necrophiles finding...love? Then maybe give it a shot lol

Oh, the whole cast are gay men either fighting AIDS or worried about getting it too. So there's that

Look what I had absolutely no choice but to order! I‘ve seen this on tiktok a lot and my favourite horror author reviewer said it was beautifully written and very disturbing so……. I could not resist for #scarathlon2021 #teamslaughter

BookwormAHN I read it years ago and it was intense and brilliant. My favorite of her books though is Lost Souls, so if you like the way she writes for Exquisite Corpse you should try that one next 👻 3y

This weekend I review the LGBTQ+ splatterpunk book, "Exquisite Corpse" by Poppy Z. Brite.

hefau She was one of my favorite authors when I was a teen. 3y
BookwormOfTheDamned @hefau I just started reading Brite, and am now a true fan. Sometimes, you can luck up and buy signed copies of Brite's work on FB. He goes under the name Billy Martin now, if you look him up for a signed edition. 3y
hefau @BookwormOfTheDamned Oh wow, I had no idea about either. Thanks for the info. :) I kinda dropped off when he started writing stories about chefs and restaurants—still a great author but it wasn‘t my cup of tea. 🍵 3y
BookwormOfTheDamned @hefau Yeah, I'm sure they are good books, but I prefer horror lol 3y

I don‘t read much horror, but this novel by trans male author Poppy Z. Brite is brilliantly written. This is a gay themed novel based on Jeffrey Dahmer and Dennis Nilsen. I don‘t want to spoil anything, but this will stay with you. This tells the story of gay men Tran, Jay, Andrew, and Lucas as their lives become entwined and caught up in a web of lies, sex, and murder. TRIGGER WARNING: EXPLICIT CONTENT. This book has been banned many times.

The last couple horror stories (ie Alice) I read were abysmal, but I loved this one. Picked it up because transman authored horror sounded like a thing I needed, and even though it's a cis gay, Dahmer inspired piece, I'm glad I read it. Characters are actually filled out and even though it has some small thorns of awkward prose, on the whole it's just this amazing, awful gore... tale. (Erotica?)

Hey new #lmpbc group! I‘m super excited for our #GroupHorror and these were some of the selections I was thinking of choosing from. Have you guys read any of these? Any of these on your TBR?

And if either of you know our last member, could you let me know her username? There are a couple Littens with that name and I don‘t want to tag the wrong person!

wellreadredhead @vivastory I love it when I find books set near where I live! I feel like it adds another dimension to the reading experience - especially if it‘s a scary book. 6y
vivastory Definitely! One of the opening scenes is set in the library with the giant book spines on the outside of the parking garage. I used to live in an apartment a block away from it. 6y

I‘m torn between a so so and a pick on this. It was super weird - a story about serial killers and AIDS and different men and how they come together. I liked the story and it was very interesting, but there were parts where the story was a little much/too hard to believe for me.

This book is not for the faint of heart. It is darker than any book I have ever read. It is filled with gore, love, and evil. I recommend this to only people who can look past the gore and see the true storylines. I personally really enjoyed this book.

A creepy book it was. The starting of this book is very good and intense and once it shifts to another character it gets dragged down. Lost interest in the midway and finished it off after a long and discontinuous read.
